Issue with Pets and how to fix it.

Recommended Posts

The Pets update feels a lot like a mod to me. They're purely cosmetic and they are OP, but more importantly, they aren't naturally implemented at all and that's my biggest issue.

I really do not like the idea of crafting animals, again, it's a very typical thing you would see in a mod rather than an official game update because it's frankly...kinda cheap. You are not organically introducing them into the world, you are just putting together a recipe of random items that vaguely relate to the lore of that animal.

We (presumably) want things like Smallbird and life-cycle mechanics, where it's in the diegesis of the world and it adds to this feeling that you are surviving amongst living fauna.

I don't think it would be that hard either:

The broodling can be easily amended by putting a timer on the Extra-Adorable Lavae. In in other words, it just grows naturally like a Smallbird.

The Vargling could be a great opportunity to give a purpose to the Varg. Seriously, does anyone ever fight those things? Cause there's no reward in doing so. Basically, you kill the Varg and the pup is left orphaned for you to adopt.

Ewelet, you could do something similar as the Varg. Or...How about you use this opportunity to introduce Winnie? Just a thought.

Glomglom can just be an egg that Glommer drops after you give it enough sugar, specifically taffy.

Anyway, those are just some ideas. I feel like a lot of the recent updates just add things, but they never feel natural. The Ewecus still bothers me; add it to the world by giving it a purpose in it other that just existing.

Oh, and if you are worried about wasting assets. When we first saw the Rock Den, we immediately thought it was the spawner for Grass Geckos.

There's still no spawner for Grass Geckos, presumably they can go extinct? Or do they spawn magically? Just saying, you got a spawner right there.

No if you feed them a glow berry they also glow like Hutch so I think you meant "mostly" cosmetic. :)

Also I love being able to have a pet I won't lose to almost anything that comes near it, and the quotes and cuteness of it are pretty nice too.

Also what is up with people really wanting Winnie in the game? She looks rather bland to me.

You know if you eat a Glow Berry, it makes you glow right? That's a lot more practical.

I do to, but it's kinda OP I feel. I want to care for it and have to feed it. I want a challenge.

I'm totally fine with it not attacking anything however, Smallbirds are so annoying in that way.

You also lose sanity when you eat a glow berry, but I get what you're saying.

You can feed it...I just made a statement which said the pets can eat stuff.

I agree, she is sort of bland, that's why they never bothered finishing her and instead they changed her to Wigfrid. But she looks like she is design after Little Bo Peep, who lost her sheep...You see where I'm going with this?

This again? Ok, I'll agree that it is a strange way to add in pets, but I believe that this unusual method of getting pets is completely intentional. Because it uses the crafting menu this means that pets skins could be a possibility in the future. Also, don't think of it as crafting them, but using food and an item with a familiar scent to coax them out of their little den.

I'd also like to point out that pets aren't 100% implemented yet. There's comments in their code that pretty much says they're unfinished.

I wouldn't say it's unusual, look at any mod ever, but I like that idea of coaxing them out of their den. That's not bad at all.

As for Pet Skins...Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh. They are so small. Who cares.

And you are right, hopefully updates will help.

On second thought

NO! GOD NO! NO!

I just realised that means that we are gonna get dogs with top hats and all kinda stupid stuff. No, just no.

I'm sure skin collectors would care. Cosmetic options aren't ever a bad thing. I wouldn't mind having a kittykit skin that would match my real cat's fur pattern. Besides, feet and hand slots are even smaller, but we still have skins for them don't we?

I highly doubt we'd be getting skins like that. I meant like alternate fur colors and patterns.

And how exciting is it when you get those Striking Gloves?

I wouldn't be opposed to that. I just don't want this game to turn into Team Fortress 2.

I'm actually all for dogs wearing hats.

Having pets not be craftable would still leave the option to change their skins. Maybe we could use the brush on them the "change their hairstyle" and then select a skin (on second though that thing looks like it would be pretty painful for small animals) or when you use a wardrobe there could be an option for putting skins on your pet etc

...

You know, up till now, I was pretty convinced that the way pets were added right now was mainly for testing purposes - an easy way to get the things now so we can see about their A.I. and animations and stuff, so that eventually, they could all be reassigned to their true purposes elsewhere in the game.

But the idea of introducing pet skins seems just a bit too plausible. If that's what this is all about, I'm going to give you Klei guys a very stern disappointed glare. >:(
