What to do during the "mid-game?"

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, haven't played Don't Starve in a full year or two. Got into DST recently and have been having fun playing with randoms. We get a base set up, complete with farms, crock pots, fridges, and magic machines. I have a set of Night Armor and a Dark Sword. The fridge is full of mushrooms and monster meat so there's plenty of meatballs for everyone. Winter is halfway over, haven't seen the Deerclops yet. Everyone has a walking cane and a few have Tam O' Shanters.

So... now what? I'm not sure if this would be considered mid-game or end-game, as I haven't played the game in a while so I'm not sure what else there is to accomplish. I have fun setting the base up and stocking up on food, but once I get there, I feel like the game is over. What more is there to accomplish?

I agree though there needs to be more end game things. You still have the fly to kill and the ancient guardian! I killed fly about 30 times on my 800 day world for the gems in the ruins . But I think they need an over world or something with a harder boss to kill

Don't Starve

Egh, I would guess this is kind of the point in that thread I made about the game lacking in good game design... It would be great if what we can achieve very quickly as pros would only be possible to achieve at a slower pace. That'll then let us focis more on survival than anything else. If something like Energy stat was introduced, surviving would be a bit more tricky as sleeping/sitting down (in the case of Wickerbottom) would be needed to be done every now and then, say like every 2 days for a minute or two or so.

Ruins are inside of the caves . The ruins will have a different flooding like an ancient marbel look to it. They are just very deep inside the caves usually past the monkeys and near the lichen . You will also find tons of broken clock works down there and nightmare fissures leading to the ancient guardian labyrinth.

Ruins? How do I get there? I have walked around caves for quite a while but found no sinkholes leading further down. Are the ruins just part of caves now?

What Herbalist said. The caves are connected to the ruins. It's one giant circle where the caves are on the outer part of the circle, and the ruins are more toward the center of the map. Be very cautious of the nightmare cycle however, cause your life will be claimed if you're not prepared.

Waiting for the Griefers...

No, seriously: a deerclops at the end of the season is fun. Dealing with spider queens is fun. You are still to get giant hound waves. With nice folks from here, we got a shrine of the hallowed Potato Cup on The Name of the Nome. From the Ashes has a giant flowerbed to Klei saying THANKS, entirely from flowers. But what I do in particular - apart from spelunking - when I want to spice things up is using the world as my personal Roll20 room for sessions. Sure, if it is public - it usually is - I need to make rounds around to check on everyone, especially newbies (though they tend to stick close to me anyway), if the starting gear storage is well-equipped and so on, but the challenge of roleplaying defending that little Webber from hounds AND a bearger (Fortie, your opinion?)... well, I would not trade it for anything else.

It partially stems from the fact I am lazy. If I GM through DST, I don't have to deal with creating many NPCs (survive the wilderness, remember?). Not even bother with the landscape. And I have great fun myself since there is so much thrown at me even without my GM-ing magicks.

Honestly, all you need is a team of nice people. You will figure something out. And if you start getting stagnant... roll a new world. DST has lots of replay value after all.

In mid game you prepare for late game - Obvious,Captain.

I really don't understand the separation between early and late game in DST, since in the worlds I join, either someone already stole harvested all the resources for late game(Ruins, Non-renewable loot) or we manage to do this ourselves within the 3 first seasons, then I leave for good in summer and play somewhere else.

In case of DS, as I stated in the first quote, all you can do in mid-game is collect everything you need to mess around in late game. Raid all the ruins and get everything you can from there(becoming badass enough to run around mid nightmare phase) and make some cool farms(the max I did in my +420 days world was a bunny farm with my houndius(not the best use,tbh/since I mistakenly placed one of them near the bunny village I just ran with it) for some jerkies

One thing that you need to do mid-game is completely nullify the hunger from your death probabilities list. Seriously, place one little farm in each biome and you'll never starve, ever....NEVER

Also make your canes lazy foragers......just do it

Surround the portal with 100 Spider Glands, 50 tophats, and 100 bird traps. Then find out later that someone burned it all, picked up all the top hats and half the traps, and died 20 feet from the portal.

I don't...really know how to describe what I do "mid-game"..for me, there kind of isn't a definite change between early and late--well, except that you start getting WAY too many/frequent hounds, and you're better prepared to deal with the giants later on.  I go from simple to fancy while still playing the same way the whole time--always exploring, gathering, hunting, helping the occasional new player to the base before they freeze/overheat, etc.

Even the seasons don't really change how I act; I NEVER just turtle at base in summer or winter.  If you do that you run out of supplies. Even if you have a megabase, _things don't grow back_.  There's always something to make, something you ran out of, something to build, something to repair, someplace you haven't fully explored yet or some huge spider nest that needs to be taken care of.  I just kind of keep playing in this half hunter-gatherer, half living at base lifestyle until everyone dies and the server resets.  (shrug)

How do I keep from getting bored?  Dunno, but my longest run is around 432 days and still going.  :D

(also Diezen psst I'll totally take that spider loot off your hands.  Please?)

Well I usually just drop it all by the portal or some rando's base.
