Should Jack Carter Become a Playable Character?

Recommended Posts

For those new to Don't Starve, Jack Carter was mentioned at least twice in the "William Carter" puzzles. The first was a letter he sent to William Carter a.k.a Maxwell and it talked about how exciting it was that William had come to America. It's obvious the two are brothers. Anyway, the letter also mentions that their mother had yet to meet the twins, most likely Jack's children and the very reason why it's a headcanon that Wendy is Maxwell's niece.

The second time he was mentioned was in a postcard written by William about how reports of his demise should be ignored, however, it's possible the message was never sent as the address was scratched out, which would have left Jack to wonder if William was alive or not.

Now lets think about how it's possible Jack could be introduced as a character:

First his brother is missing or dead as reports state, but in reality William has changed his identity to Maxwell, leaving Jack to believe the worst.

Second, if Wendy and Abigail are in fact his daughters, Abigail dies under mysterious circumstances and it leaves Wendy in a perpetual state of grief, unable to let go of her other half.

Third, Wendy goes missing because her wish has something to do with keeping Abigail around.

This would leave Jack with grief and questions about how and why this all happened.

In comes Charlie.

My headcanon is that Charlie would not target those with a desire so much as those who are sad as it seems to be a running theme for her (the florid posturn is examined to have a twinge of sadness by Wendy, and then there's the tragic torch).

I picture Charlie approaching Jack in some way and realizing that he's been hurt by Maxwell as she had been, she'd bring him to Their world so he could find the answers he was looking for.

Personally, I imagine him as an old man once he reaches Their world, and in keeping up with the Carter's and death or darkness, Jack gets a scythe.

You never know.

The story still seems to be in some development as time goes on.

On the whole "W" name thing, Charlie is the only character in the entire game whose name starts with a different letter; granted she's now the Queen of the world and not an actual playable character, but this does possibly open the chance for names like "Jack," or at least "Carter" to enter Their world.

Abigail is dead and not playable.  And people have even joked that the fact she died is BECAUSE her name doesn't begin with W.  : P  It's only _playable_ characters whose names have to start with W.

Maxwell gets around this by that not being his real name.  Charlie is in charge now, but not playable. (And I have my own headcanon theory that "Wigfrid" is not our dear carnivourous redhead's real name...but the Viking warrior character she's playing, and that she identifies more strongly as the made-up character, to the point where she kind of IS it now.  Whatever her original name was, it doesn't matter.)

So, to be a playable character, Jack Carter would have to have a middle name or childhood nickname or something that he identifies with more strongly than the name "Jack", that begins with a W. If he does, we'll never know, but I somehow doubt it.  If he was going to use a family in-joke nickname anywhere, the most likely place would be on a letter to his brother... (And no, he can't go ahead and be playable anyway if his name really is just Jack, it.  Doesn't.  Fit.)

I do like your design for him, though.   I'm not sure he'd be that old by the time he gets there, unless he married late or some time-warping stuff is going on?  (Going by the letter dates, "the twins" would be teenagers by the time 1920 rolls around, so Jack would be middle-aged most likely.)  But I do like that you made him a blonde, like Wendy and Abigail.  :)

If the letter W is really an issue I guess you could have the character named something like WJ Carter or W. Jack Carter or Wjack with a silent W or whatever satisfies the compulsiveness that demands that every character name must begin with W. :)

Wolfgang is pronounced Vulfgan anyway, why not. :D

I'm not expert on Norse names but Wigfrid sounds made up for all we know.

Forgot about Abigail...whoops.

Well I thought of him as an old man because it's possible that Jack could come to Their world years after Wendy's disappearance. Time does move differently and it's possible he could be brought in even years after Wilson was taken.

My second idea is that Jack is implemented as a boss. Again, going on the idea that Charlie targets those who are sad, she brings him and They turn his sadness into anger, especially towards Maxwell, becoming the "Bishop" of Charlie's court. I have seen people hoping for the possibility of DST Adventure Mode and the idea is Jack is one of the bosses of the five worlds players enter.

Wigfrid is obviously a pun on the Nibelungenlied/The Song of the Nibelungs, namely on Siegfried. Her prefab name, Wathgrithr, is probably a callback to Ráðgríðr from the Nafnaþulur and the Grímnismál. Similarly to Maxwell having the prefab Waxwell, her name's first letter is changed into W.

Wabbajack :cheekychris:.

It'd be cool, but I feel that he is really not very important to the plot, if he were added now, we'd have to go back to square 1, introduce him to everyone, and that stuff. If he's added cool, am I asking for him to be added? Not really. I'd much rather have Charlie.

Oh no, Jack Carter turned into a Homestar Runner Bub's persona.

Maybe not now, but what about as the story develops?
