El Tusko and other Summery Goodness

Recommended Posts

Summer is...lame. It's just so lame. I mean, the music is pretty cool, and so are the colors. But Summer really doesn't have much unique stuff going for it, especially with the Dragonfly being a year-round thing in DST. :( I mean, there's smoldering, but that's about it. Redbirds are around almost all year! Summer would be cooler (there's a joke there somewhere...) if it had more parallels to Winter. Here's what I'm thinking. In the Summer, an empty Walrus campsite will become a Walrus Cabana. At some point, El Tusko, the stereotypical Mexican Walrus, shall emerge from the Cabana, accompanied by fire hounds and Little Tusko. El Tusko, contrary to his counterpart Mactusk, is slower, and punches the player. Upon death he drops the standard meat tusk, and a Sombrero, which does as much sanity gain as a Tam O'Shanter, but instead provides moderate heat protection. Instead of a blow dart he drops a bottle of hot sauce. You can drink this run really fast but overheat. Instead of Pengulls on ice patches, there would be particularly dry looking patches of land where Pelicardinals hang out! You can kill them for crimson feathers and maybe drumsticks or morsels, and steal their eggs. I'm not wild about my current ideas about them, so please, feel free to contribute. Another thing that needs to be addressed is songbirds. We have redbirds for 3 of the 4 seasons. Which seasons should they be in? Which seasons shouldn't they be in? I'm really lost on that one. Anyway, please take this all into consideration. And now discuss.

 Yes

But Summer really doesn't have much unique stuff going for it, especially with the Dragonfly being a year-round thing in DST.

I think I suggested it somewhere to have the Dragonfly behave differently over the seasons, making it either more vulnerable or more active and aggressive in Summer.

Summer would be cooler (there's a joke there somewhere...) if it had more parallels to Winter.

Yes and No. At the same time I feel like if Summer needs some differentiation so that it stops feeling like Backwards Winter(like Spring isn't Backwards Autumn), but at the same time, some backwards winter stuff well done might at least help it being boring heat season.

El Tusko, the Mexican Walrus

Creative. I like it. Little Tusko sounds a bit non-mexican, though. Anybody who speaks Spanish(or just is aware of mexican stereotypes) is willing to suggest a better Backwards Wee MacTusk name?

is slower, and punches the player

So, double disadvantage? I don't think that would really make him nearly as hard as Mactusk. Don't take it with both hands. At least give with one of them.

Sombrero, which does as much sanity gain as a Tam O'Shanter, but instead provides moderate heat protection.

Smart.

Instead of a blow dart he drops a bottle of hot sauce.

why not fire darts? And make it use them? Alright, I'm joking, please don't kill me.

Pelicardinals

I like the name, but the idea kinda feels like just more backwards Winter for the sake of Backwards Winter. Add some uniqueness, mate.

We have redbirds for 3 of the 4 seasons.

"Does that mean spring is coming? I hope not."

Anything that adds more purpose and things(and dangers) to summer makes me happy.

1) Yes and No. At the same time I feel like if Summer needs some differentiation so that it stops feeling like Backwards Winter(like Spring isn't Backwards Autumn), but at the same time, some backwards winter stuff well done might at least help it being boring heat season.

1) I know backwards winter isn't perfect, but it's better than summer. Besides, Spring and Summer, are pretty similar, although Spring has more rain.

2) I couldn't think of an English slang word that Spanish speakers use to mean little. Maybe Nino Tusko? (I wish I could type accents. :( )

3) I meant the punches to be really strong.

4) That's why I said I wasn't wild about the idea.

I like the idea of a Mexican-themed mob that is exclusive to summer.

Maybe something related to Mexican wrestling?

Hot sauce would be cool. Maybe instead of making it increase movement speed, it could be something you could use to spice up crockpot recipes -- make them give an extra 5 sanity when consumed. You could use red mushrooms to fill up the bottle of hot sauce.

This is easily my favorite suggestion from now on. I hope it'll come to life.

Hahahahahahahaha...

Kind of edgy, but could be something interresting... Though I agree with the Sombrero, I think having a different kind of an animal for Summer for this group in place of the Walrus would be better as Walrus from my knowledge tend to like cold places irl, so having them for Winter only seems to make more sense. Also, hmm, why not just make Buzzards exclusive to Summer which would be a contrast to Winter?

But wait, hotsauce? What's he gonna do, throw hotsauce in your face? Causr you said it would be in place of bloe dart, soooooooo...

The most natural and informal way to refer to something as 'little' is to add an 'ito' or 'ita' suffix, depending on the gender of the thing you want to talk about. So, in this case, it would be 'El Tuskito.' Not sure how I feel about him dropping a sombrero, though. That just seems too predictable and it's somewhat overdone, in my opinion. But I think Summer would definitely be way more fun if it had more exclusive elements like the walruses and pengulls in Winter.

I don't know about a walrus, but definitely some sort of equivalent. I remember awhile back someone suggested a family of grizzly bears, but we already have a bear themed mob. LAND SHARK

Other than that, I think you've got a pretty good suggestion forming. :D

Also, hmm, why not just make Buzzards exclusive to Summer which would be a contrast to Winter?
because their booring and stoopeed. Although I would like that or something similar if it at least made Buzzards something other than a food generator. Like if they actually wandered around and trampled your crops,  or attacked you if you had some specific type of food. There's something quite interesting and ominous about a huge bird's shadow passing by that kinda went unexplored on the Buzzards.

And I do agree that if another animal can be put instead, it should. Walrus is too reskinny and Wintery by nature. But it must have a sombrero. I can't really think of any big summery animals that are not australian, though.

Bring on El Tusko and Tuskito!

If he isn't a walrus, or even if he is, can he wear a lucha libre mask and something he drops can be used to make a champions belt or another mask? I would throw money at that idea.

Elephants also sport tusks and they're warm weather themed, you could keep the name even! Or perhaps even a warthog, IIRC they also have tusks and they're known for being rather viscous as well.

Lets ignore how WILDLY offensive El Tusco is in everything you envisioned for him.

I agree.  Someone pointed out how boring summer is in game the other day and I was about to rebut him but then realized he's right.  There is NOTHING to do in summer other than contest the heat.  Which for MOST of the players out there on public servers that's hard enough but for the more experienced players yeah there is pretty much NOTHING to do in summer.  There needs to be some sort of task and/or mobs exclusive to summer we can hunt or farm just to give summer some sort of personality and fun.

A summer version of the Tam is great idea btw!  Great sanity gain but only enough heat protection to get you through half the day.

Lets ignore how WILDLY offensive El Tusco is in everything you envisioned for him.

Stereotypes are jokes. Everyone can laugh at one, but people sometimes take it too seriously. Also, what about the stereotypical Scottish Mactusk and his Kilt and "Tam O' Shanter" and "Wee" little son?

The Mac Tusk is clever and cheeky. Its not WILDLY offensive like your outline for the El Tusco.

I never really understood why anyone should get to decide what is and isn't offensive to other people. Are you part of the culture in question? If not, what gives you the right to decide how they should feel? If you are, still, what gives you the right to represent your entire culture and decide what they should find offensive? Also, if it was a character I might understand your taking offense. It's not a person. It's a walrus. But even then, what's offensive about it? That he wears a sombrero (a hat also commonly worn by Cowboys across the U.S. That originally came from Spain [the hats, not the cowboys]) ? That he stays in a cabana (a structure built in plenty of tropical climates)? That he punches people? If you were to take offense at anything it should only be the name, but if anything the name is the only joke there, and it's just a joke.

Given that statistically you're probably a white male anyways, you don't have any ground to stand on (assuming your Caucasian status and Y chromosome of course).

El Tusko is a great idea, and you could have just said he should change the name to something like el colmillo instead, rather than ignorantly claiming its wildly offensive to a group of people you can't speak for. Unless of course you're the head of all Spanish speaking people who live in warm climates and have some tie to sombreros. In which case, I apologize for my insolence.

Edit: clarified some things.

Lets ignore how WILDLY offensive El Tusco is in everything you envisioned for him.
I don't see how stereotypes are offensive. I don't get offended when people immediatly think that all I see around is Football(not Handegg, mind you), Carnival and the Amazonian Jungle when I say I'm brazilian. It's our thing, much like Sombreros and Spices are kind of a Mexican thing.
I personaly hate Carnival and live quite a distance away from the still standing part of the Jungle(really, it's not as much of the territory as you think), and am not really a fan of Football(although I know that brits rock at it for some reason), but these are stereotypes. Modifyed and exagerated versions of reality.(and no, nobody here walks around naked. Except some nomadic tribes that refuse to interact with the rest of the world that live around the jungle.)
They are not offensive unless you make it so or attacks a particular set of people. I know that people are rather sensitive towards stereotyping of Latinos, specially mexicans due to not wanting to be xenophobic, but I don't think this one is really bad or malicious in any way. Now if when Wilson examines him he says something like "Stop stealing my jobs!" then I'll be worried.

But I actually think that it needs to be even more mexican, as y'know, There are no Walrus in Mexico.

Fennec Fox
adurablu. But don't they live in really cold places?

Elephants also sport tusks and they're warm weather themed, you could keep the name even! Or perhaps even a warthog, IIRC they also have tusks and they're known for being rather viscous as well.
It could not even have a tusk. If he had some special item of himself it would be even better.

Or just use a Chihuahua and add a sombrero.
I approve of that.
