Nighttime is also when I get my cooking done and if there are resources within range of my firelight, like twigs or grass, I will also harvest them in the night. So I guess I'm not entirely idle at night. I've actually spent many an entire night slaving away over my crock pots after a day of collecting fresh meat.

Cook my food, and do anything else that needs to be done (Or I can do, lol.) and when/if there isn't anything to do (Normally not.) I go on IFunny, Facebook, or the forums. Sometimes i'll end up sitting there and staring though lol.

I cook all my food, then when I'm done I do the same thing you do, alt-tab and check the forums. Sometimes I place spider's nests near my camps so that I have something to kill at night, though. It's quite fun, but I always end up with way too much loot I'll never use.

Organize my inventory and chests around the fire, keep most essentials and utility in main slots and other tools misc supplies in backpack, incase I lose it somehow. Also throwing some food in the crock pot and reharvesting pumpkin turbo farms, all 20 plots.

Night, when there is nothing left to do (no cooking, plant tending, etc.) is one of the most boring points of the game. They really need to introduce something interesting and useful to do, beyond these things, that can pass the night. Some examples:

- setting waypoint markers on the map

- setting up orders for pigment to do (i.e. which plants to tend to, cooking to do, areas to cut down trees, etc.)

There are plenty of things they CAN do. I think leaving the night with not much to do (unless you are being attacked or tending to plants, etc.) will only hurt the replayability of game in the long run.

Straw roll.... can sleep without fire. One click at dusk, and its instant morning.

Makes me think that it might be a great camping accessory when wondering away from the base. Instead of chopping the trees for camp fires, and waiting for the wrath of tree guardian, just stack up on the rolls. They take a bit of straw to create, but they are stack-able, so just prepare yourself at your base, for the journey. Once out, you don't need to set up the fire, just unroll the roll and go to sleep.

Hounds attack during the day as well, when skipping the night.

When at my base camp I usually tend to my plants and organize stuff. When I'm at one of my sub camps I just wait out the night.

I just spent quite some time reorganizing my base camp so everything is more accessible during the night and I got rid of things that I don't need anymore like the science machine and the slow farm plots.

I drop off my loot from the day's adventuring.

I restock on any eaten food and/or armor.

Check my map and plan where I want to venture to next.

That usually takes up the whole night, but if it doesn't then...

I make a torch and get a headstart to where I want to go to.

Essentially what I do, the night isn't exactly that long either... Don't know why people complain about it being boring.
