jeneah
Hello all! I'm having fun reading everyone's stories and checking out your screenshots! One thing I noticed is that many of you are using walls. After hundreds of hours playing DS and DST, I never got into building walls (never saw the need since baddies just attack the walls anyway). I think starting on the PS4 influenced my style since placing things like walls precisely is such a pain in the ass. What am I missing?
GoshJosh
@jeneah, The main thing I like walls for is to make a Koalefant pin. I usually prefer to use rock walls for fire protection and durability. Also if your trying to save resources use the ocean as part of 1 or 2 of the walls. If you do it that way, you can also squeeze thru the wall and ocean gap that is there, but the Koalefant can't. Arcita
@GoshJosh: but *why*? When I go after the koalefant I just kill it...I love how this game has led you to an existential quandary.
Prince143
@GoshJosh: but *why*? When I go after the koalefant I just kill it... The koalefant trunk spoils faster, so it is better to kill the koalefant when the winter is near. You should surround and cage him with walls so it won't go anywhere. GoshJosh
@GoshJosh: but *why*? When I go after the koalefant I just kill it...Like said b4: the trunks freshness can be kept. Also that's a lot of meat you can get in winter if you were not able to successfully stock up on food. In the mean time, koalefants poop manure so that's a plus. Or if you just want to be fancy~
mellojoe
Build a ZOO! And decoration. And to keep aggressive mobs out of certain areas, at least slow them down so they don't just plow through.
blaaaat
Walls are good for a panic room and pens. And to keep neighbors out if you live near pigs or beefalos. They can also have a small use to help plan the layout of your base if you don't have other supplies yet.
TheTraditionalGentleman
To me they seem to at least direct monsters in a certain way, and as long as they aren't aggro the walls seem to keep them from just wondering into camp. (I'm looking at you, spiders!).
Sarxis
I am of the school that the walls are needless. I don't really have fun building them or maintaning them because of the unwieldy mechanics. So I just don't bother.
Valinth
I like using walls as decoration, usually end up making a giant circle though.
applebottom
I see a lot of pretty castles in forum so I tried using walls. But I throw down the unplaced walls in frustration everytime I misclick and the wall is placed one square away from where it's supposed to be. Also, it kinda sucks that they don't show up in map. It makes it difficult when you're running back to firepit in the dark and you keep bumping into walls trying to find that "door". Your castles are preeeetty though. Maybe walls take getting used to and I've yet to get the hang of it. Or I'm just laaaaazy. *throws items haphazardly on floor**hides messy camp screenshots*
Catweaselcrow
You can also use walls to make a corridor into your base. Line corridor with tooth traps. Use this to eliminate hound waves, as an alternative to the "firepit surrounded by tooth traps" setup. Personally, I don't bother with them much, though. SapphireBullets
The koalefant trunk spoils faster, so it is better to kill the koalefant when the winter is near. You should surround and cage him with walls so it won't go anywhere. This has inspired me to mark found Koalaphants with otherwise useless signposts and to burn them or hammer them when I harvest the beast. LadyAzure
I build walls purely for cosmetic reasons, as a designer I just love designing my base to look awesome. I even have a patio with wooden walls and wooden floor. I put a fire pit out there too for BBQ nights XD

LadyAzure
Well they don't really serve any other huge benefits other then creating a choke point for the hounds to fall victim of my tooth traps, which by the way is ironic isn't it? Hehe
Mobbstar
Women... For some reasons I never understand your memes... Entirely ignoring the topic of walls. Fun Fact: Deerclops can smash any wall in one hit, even your FireWall
