Have you ever noticed the odd Run-down house in a place that wouldn't usually have it? Or a group of pigmen battling it out with a group of merms? I know I have... but what does this all mean?

These are just ones of the most recent encounters I had with warring pigs and merms... they've been battling it out since before we freed Maxwell from the Nightmare Throne.

They're appearing more and more frequently. O__O

They kinda just appeared out of nowhere but I have been thankful to them because of the free meat, fish, frog legs, and pigskins that results in their skirmishes...

But don't you find it odd that nothing else happens? sure, they're both hostile to each other... but why?

Would it be too far fetched to say that they're at war?

If so, wouldn't you want to participate to in it to some degree? But what would be the implications?

Would it enhance the DST experience by creating factions? Or would it ruin the survival element of the game? What if without being able to fend for yourself, either faction wouldn't let you join them? This would encourage players to do well in the game so they could participate/unlock this event!

But that's just me... personally, I would like something like this happening after a few game days (probably after the 150 days mark)

Or...

Could you imagine a dedicated server where you are flung into a war over the world... what would you do?

Concepts and Mechanics

At World Gen

  • At World gen, the Pig King always spawns in a pig village with Pig Warrior Torches surrounding him instead of the most common Nightmare Obelisks and A Merm King with a similar set-up on the swamps in a Merm Village not dissimilar to the one found in "Two Worlds" in Adventure Mode with more Maxwellian themed flooring and decorations (such as Carpet Floors and Checker Floors.

Day 1-50 (Starting)

  • During early stages of the world at about the span of Day 1 to 50, the typical Don't Starve game play is observed and minor disputes between pigs and merms occur in the form of the current set pieces/random encounters already in game which involve a house from either the pigs or merms and the opposition around them or 4 of each faction battling it out in the wilderness.

Day 51-99 (Preparations and Disputes)

  • On Day 51 to 99, an increase in this behavior will be noted when a group of pigs from the main Pig village to which the Pig King is a resident to will march on to the swamps where it happens, a Merm King has emerged and sits in a small area much like the pig King's set-up.
  • During this time, a random encounter could be spotted with both merms and pigs fighting and a "letter" (papyrus; similar to the one dropped by birds that have codes in DS - RoG). When inspected, it will read "The time to rule has come. "They" have seen it fit. A King for a King. Checkmate." or something similarly vague that hints in capturing either faction's King or enslaving them.

Day 100-150 (How to "War")

  • By Day 100, Hound attacks and numbers will have already peaked and four seasons would have passed (RoG). By this point, Merms would have gained the ability to wear hats but will have their movement movement speed reduced by 10% as a trade-off. They will also not attack players who have come close to their homes.
  • Merm warriors will behave in the same manner as Pig Warriors.
  • Merms will now accept food similar to Pigs. Giving them vegetables/fruits will yield Gunao.
  • You will now be able to trade trinkets or meat/eggs to the Merm King. If this is the first time the player has traded with the Merm King, an additional blue print for Merm Houses will be given.

Day 151-200 (They did what?!)

  • By Day 151-200,(or 200; a longer period for this would be ideal as increasing the activity by increments would extend the player's preparation time and hopefully is already able to survive quite well by now) they will gain the ability to pick-up, create (or some may spawn with items already randomly given to them), and wield weapons and armor.
  • From time to time (most likely every 5-7 Days, a group of 4-5 Pig Warriors and Merm Warriors from the Pig Village and Merm Village respectively will spawn at a version of their "Main Barracks" found in their village. This structure may not be burned/destroyed/hammered/crafted by the player similar to a Walrus Igloo.
  • The 4 will consist of 1 leader (equipped with a feather hat, Ham Bat (Pigs; debatable) and Tentacle Spike (Merms), and a log suit), 2 main warriors (typically equipped with spears, football hat (debatable) log suits), and 1 medic/support (debatable; equipped with grass armor, a top hat/straw hat, and a random tier 1 tool).
  • Medics will generally try to stay out of harms way and will heal allies with the rate of Bandage/Healing Salve for Pigs and Healing Salve/Mosquito Sacks for Merms.
  • Upon death, they will drop a random article they have currently equipped such as spear with a random durability for warriors and 1 healing item of their respective faction for medics.
  • These warriors will then follow a path leading to the opposing village and will engage enemies and other aggressive mobs such as spiders on the way.
  • In the case of a full moon, pigs will become werepigs and will become feral. They may run wild and stop their march to the enemy camps. Upon returning to normal, they will regroup towards the leader who stops and waits for the remaining living members before moving forward.
  • This is similar to games such as DoTA.

NOTE:

  • Items with "$" beside their names will have unlimited durability while wielded by both Merms and Pigs much like the Blow Dart is infinite for McTusk.
  • RED - Pigs; BLUE - Merms; GREEN - Both

Pig and Merm Gear

  • Torch ($) - during dusk, the leader and/or medic will pull out a torch to light their way
  • Spear - wielded by warriors (debatable if it looses durability so they would move to default hand-to-hand combat when worn-out)
  • Axe/Pickaxe/Shovel/Pitchfork - for medics
  • Grass Armor - for medics
  • Log Suit - for leaders and warriors
  • Feather Hat ($) (a decorative identifier to depict a squad leader of sorts but does not serve any other function in the case of the actual war but to make out a leader of sorts)
  • Ham Bat - wielded by Pig warrior's squad leaders (debatable if appropriate weapon for a pig)
  • Tentacle Spike - wielded by Merm warrior's squad leaders

Pig and Merm Drops

Aside from their common drops such as meat, pigskin, fish, frog legs...

  • Torch ($) - drops from squad leaders 75% of the time with a durability of 50% or bellow
  • Spear - drops from warriors 50% of the time with a durability of 50% or bellow
  • Axe/Pickaxe/Shovel/Pitchfork - drops from medics 75% of the time with a durability of 50% or bellow
  • Bandage/Healing Salve/Mosquito Sack - drops from medics 30% of the time with a durability. Only 1 of each will drop from their respective faction.

Day 201+ (We didn't build this in a day!)

  • On the 200th Day mark, Both factions will now start building camps near the roads toward their enemies; often, these will be built in the savanna biomes or any open areas in a similar fashion as the "Pig Forts" found in some levels of Adventure Mode.
  • Pigs will have wooden walls and 4 pig houses,1 pig torch in each entrance and a fire pit in the middle for a total of 6 Pigs. Merms will have the same set up but will have 2 merm houses each spawning 4.

What do I do?

Do you want to join a faction?

As stated above, if it is your first time transacting with either kings, a blue print will be given. In addition to the "Merm House" (Structure tab) blueprint given by the Merm King, an additional "Pig on a Pike" (Structure Tab) and "Merm Banner" (Dress Tab) blueprints are given.

Merm Blue Prints

  • Merm House - Build a House containing 4 merms. (Fish x16, Boards x4, Cut Stone x3)
  • Pig on a Pike - now you will be able to build a decorative Pig head on a pike to show off your allegiance to the Merms. Hail Hydr- Merm King! (Pig Skin x2, Twigs x3; basically similar to a "sign" in that the same amount of resources are returned upon its destruction so it can be "moved around" in the same way)
  • Merm Banner - a dress weapon similar to the cane. It deals the same damage as a Spear and shows off which side you're on. While equipped, you are not targeted by Merm Warriors and you cannot target Merms passively and will auto target Pigs and any player equipped with a Pig Banner. it has the same durability as a spear. It can be repaired with a sewing kit (Spear x1, Papyrus x4, Silk x2)

Pigmen Blue Prints

  • Fishman on a Pike - now you will be able to build a decorative Merm head on a pike to show off your allegiance to the Pigs. Praise be to the Pig King! (Fish x4, Twigs x3; basically similar to a "sign" in that the same amount of resources are returned upon its destruction so it can be "moved around" in the same way)
  • Pig Banner - a dress weapon similar to the cane. It deals the same damage as a Spear and shows off which side you're on. While equipped, you are not targeted by Pig Warriors and you cannot target Pigs passively and will auto target Merms and any player equipped with a Merm Banner. it has the same durability as a spear. It can be repaired with a sewing kit (Spear x1, Papyrus x2, Silk x4)

How do you win?

It is up to you whether you want to meddle in their state affairs. If you don't, you will witness frequent battles between Pigs and Merms and loot drops and general action in the world but they will almost certainly remain in a stalemate.

If you do however join one or the other and succeed

  • Your faction takes over the loser's village and remodel most of their structures. If you chose the Merms and defeated the Pigs, the Pig King will now be a prisoner and his Pig Warriors and the Pig Torches surrounding his "Throne" will be turned into Merm Warriors and Merm Torches.
  • Pig Houses will turn into Merm Houses and left-over pigs will be slaughtered (become 1-hit killed by merms for this occasion).
  • Pig warriors will stop spawning from the "Barracks" and it will appear run-down (much like the mechanic used for the Catcoon Den after all of the catcoon's 9 lives are up in Single Player RoG.
  • You will still be able to trade with the Pig King.
  • Every 5-8 days or so, a squad of pigs will spawn and hunt you down and the medic will resort to using McTusk's tactics of fleeing and using blow darts. If the medic is killed before the leader, the leader will "eat monster meat" to turn himself into a werepig (do the eating animation simulating that he has eaten something to make him turn into a werepig) that will have a single-minded task of hunting you down. If you are killed, he will revert back to normal and they will proceed to go to the pig village to "avenge" their kin.

This is true for merms as well but instead of weremerms, they will just have a speed boost and attack boost.

The winning faction will receive a unique weapon/headgear/armor/dress stored in a chest (Pandora's chest prefab?) that spawns in front of the defeated king... (you are encouraged to suggest some)

Pros and Cons

Merm Victory

  • Merms won't attack you; you can't befriend them.
  • You can't befriend Pigs for labor.
  • Squad of Pigs attack you as a random encounter; An abundance of Pig-related loot.
  • You can build Merm Houses around your base -- fight off mobs that get near their houses except for you.

Pig Victory

  • Pigs won't attack you; you can befriend them.
  • Use Pigs for labor (chopping trees)
  • Squads of tough, fast-moving Merms attack you as a random encounter; An abundance of Merm-related loot.
  • They're fairly easy to dispatch.
  • They can turn into Werepigs; more loot.

Guilty Conscience? Start a Revolution!

So you feel guilty about what you did to an entire species? Or you just don't want to get hassled by the blow dart spewing medic? Or you just want to start another war?

Well you can start a revolution!

To start a revolution:

  • You must (try) kill off all opposition in the conquered village. Defeat the King's captors and hammer down the torches.
  • When the torches are destroyed, the Royal Guard (a squad of the winning faction) will come and you must fight and defeat them as well.
  • When they have been defeated, 4 torches of the rebelling faction will spawn in place of the hammered-down ones.
  • You have officially sparked a revolution.

Converting the Village Back

  • Now, the village was changed into the winning faction's and so you must convert them back. (You wouldn't want the king to be in constant threat by the other houses right?)
  • To do this, we can either hammer them down and build them from scratch...
  • or have all houses in a fixed radius around the pig king transform into the respective faction upon officially starting the rebellion.
  • And so the war continues

Well, it would ensure A LOT more things to do in-game such as keeping tabs on the war; a simple decrease in a faction's numbers could lead a squad to infiltrate the village and potentially win the war. This plus the constant Giant threat, fires, resource management, hunger... there's actually no end to this!!

Suggestions and criticisms are welcome!

Merms hate everybody by their spawn. SO Maxwell would technically be being punched in the chest by the merms.

Yeah, but if we propose an "allegiance" mechanic like Appeasing the pig king for pig faction and something similar to merms then it could work though... right?

Merm king? and what would he accept? pig skins? what will he give??? (rot seems appropriate cause thats what hammered merm heads drop anyway)

I was thinking along the lines of Cthulhu (kidding) but yeah a merm royalty of sort... rot is kinda hard to make because you have to wait a while so I think that's a logical idea... but that stuff is kinda abundant in the swamps... I think meat could be the prime candidate here... or at least something much harder to obtain because merms are kinda stronger (faster) than pigs... so logically, they should be harder to befriend... any suggestions?

Wouldn't it be the Merqueen just sayin

and for the lore behind them

"There was a pig queen who was with the pig king but one day Maxwell messed around with dark magic and somehow cursed the pig queen to be turned into the Merqueen and some of the Pigmen were cursed and turned into Mermen and upon changing the Pigmen started fighting the Mermen, afraid of what the Pigmen had turned into as Pigmen are not the smartest of creatures"

Your idea remind me GTA2, where u had 3 factions and by completing missions, you could earn their respect.

IMO, it would be very fun to implement this kind of "respect bar" for each faction

- Pigs

- Merms

- Spiders

- Bunnymans

For example killing Pigs would give you respect from Merms.

To go further, you should implement some global events.

During full moon, may be pigs would raid merms houses for example.
During winter, spiders would go to colonize the world

During summer, caverns would be too hot and bunnymans come outside

During autumn, merms would build houses ... etc..

would be great for the deep content of the world ^^

An interesting idea, but I don't think spiders should be on this list. While the other three animals are anthropomorphic (pigs and bunnymen even have a limited grasp on the English language), spiders behave like any other wild animal, so I doubt, they can have respect to anyone.

During summer, caverns would be too hot and bunnymans come outside

Isn't it always cooler during summer and warmer during winter in the caves? Wouldn't it make more sense to make them come out in spring, when their caverns get flooded?

Reminds me of Night Elves turning into Naga... O___O

... Warcraft

I like the sound of Merqueen...

Give the merm leader thing shrooms!

I like green shrooms O___O

Merqueen + Pigking = Merpiglet

*shivers*

Kermit and Miss Piggy!! :-)

You could maybe make it like a base race too.

OOH and for the place where she is a large pond type thing that she sits in

The player could get in the pond; waist deep...

:wilson_lightbulb: New "pond" turf? haha could be used to make a moat... waist deep... you can fish for... fish and frogs and stuff!

XD (here's hoping!)

If anyone says it's impossible to pitchfork a pond, keep in mind that we can carry large wall segments in our pockets...

O__O let's make this happen...

Also, pot holes... just word association... ok... O__O

But of course! We do have to give it some extreme drawback because of it being a movable food source... probably make them scarce... or craftable from hmm...

  • Swamp turf x2
  • Rocks x 10
  • Cut Reeds/Cut Grass X8

:)

Interesting but these wars would have to have a purpose like invasion territories they can't have no purpose make it like each house is a fort and if the fort is attacked and they have beat it it becomes a merm/pig fort so on so forth
interesting concept but in needs solidifying before it could become fully there in terms of mechanics
