A fresh spawn Willow approaches your base...

Recommended Posts

You're playing on a dedicated survival server. It's been a few days and your base is finally coming into shape. You notice the Willow has nothing but an axe and a lighter. Her english is a bit broken and she asks if she can team with you. From your earlier exploration, finding food will be an issue and winter will be here in a few days.. What do you do?

A wild Willow appears! What do you do!?

> BALL   > BAIT> ROCK   > RUN

Obviously the rock. Too many times I've had nice-seeming Willow turn around to backstab me. If I know someone already, maybe I'll let them pick Willow. An unknown Willow? Assumption of guilt, right from the start.

Edit: Why all the hate on Willow when a torch is so easy to make? Apparently that tiny difference is enough to make people who want to grief pick her. 50%+ of the people I play with don't even make torches that often, they rely on campfires. People who grief are usually people who want low investment for a few kicks, so they don't want to bother to learn the game, they just want to get in fast and ruin some days. Willow fills that role.

Poor Willow... getting all this discrimination must take a toll on her sanity...

:willowilson:

See!! She even has to disguise herself just to stop people banning her!!

*heavy sobbing...

Free OJ!! I mean Save Willow!! I don't know how but, yeah!!

Everyone has the same argument "Torch is 2 grass 2 twigs.  Why ban willow?"  As Rezecib stated its not the difficulty of making a torch that makes her the greifer character its the fact that 50%+ of the griefers just pick her.  If they were smart, which clearly they're not since they cant think outside the greifer box, they would pick all sorts of characters.  But thats not the case.  So enough with the "its easy to make a torch" argument, griefers pick Willow.  If you're getting banned all the time when you pick Willow get mad at the griefers not the hosts or the players on the server.  Also STOP PICKING THE GRIEFER CHARACTER.

Honestly I'd allow the Willow.

BUT! Never leave your base alone with them. Honestly though, this goes for anyone new. You always have a trustworthy friend who you have quick contact with there. They can relay anything going on in case of issues.

Willows aren't even the only griefers. If you happen to just have a hammer lying around(or enough materials for one) they can just break everything you have. That was an issue I had before. Someone just popped in and started hammering down much of our stuff before leaving. They had taken a good chunk of resources as well while we're all struggling on the last few days of Winter to survive.

Not only that, you often have the griefers who find the sanity draining items who will just wear it to run their sanity dry and cause havoc before dying and haunting everything.

In the end:  never leave your base unattended with new untrusted people, keep certain items out of camp grabbing zones...And if someone dies and you've made it clear that you do not allow haunting yet they haunt because you can't revive them in two seconds, it's best to just ban/kick them.

People are varied, Public is a risk that you take, so be wary.

Losing my base to low-sanity well-intentioned Willows sucks.  An unknown Willow that I'm not even sure is good-intentioned, yeah, not risking it.

It's a survival game, after all.  I don't let drifters crash at my house IRL either, go figure.

Did you know that Willow can set you on fire at low Sanity?  Happened to me once as a Willow tried to trade me some food (they were trying to be nice, stayed away from the camp all night, just came over to hand off some food and... FIRE!).

Now that was an interesting death, lol.

Yeah, that's Willow's major downfall. She has an infinite lighter, gains sanity from fire, and is fire immune. BUT, she has a much lower sanity than many others and can lose it real fast. When at low sanity she says something along the lines of "Oopsie" or "teehee" and lights a fire at her feet.

It is one of those things that the well intentioned Willows desperately hate because they can cause so much havoc without trying.

Low sanity, take a step near the grass farm, suddenly it's all burnt down. RoG will only make those worse

I can tell you it's happened to me on multiple occasions and I've apologized profusely and just stood in the campfire until I knew I was safe enough to move again. It sucks big time. :(

I breathe down their neck for at least three days with my debug spawned panflute and gunpowder stack I have just for this.

When I'm host anyway. If I'm a client I still breathe down their necks just without the panflute.

I swear, Don't Starve Together has suddenly turned against Willow. I find this fact to be both interesting and highly disheartening. But then again, Griefers are pretty prevalent, and honestly take out the Together from Don't Starve Together.

I find it mostly interesting. I hardly ever play with people off my friend's list, so I don't get griefers in my servers. I don't mind when people are Willow, and I let them join my camps.

However, some of them ARE new players, and don't know how to manage her sanity correctly.

So, our solution was to create a "Willow's Vacation Home" away from our base, with stone walls, and some supplies in a chest. She goes there when she's not feeling too good in the head, haha, and comes back when her sanity is higher.

I like Willow, and I actually found the need to find new ways to accommodate her downsides BECAUSE of it being on a together server interesting and part of why DST is such a different game then DS. And interesting if you like the story and lore perspective on it too, like I do, ahha.

But yeah. Random Willows... that's a tough one.

the down side needs to be changed , its was always a hilariously short sighted downside , she is alreasy one of the least interesting players .  yay fire immunity and a permanent torch (one of the cheapest crafts in the universe)

how many people  actually take considerable fire damage any way?

regardless for bonuses so minor  one really  needs to question why she is the only character whos downside can have consequences so unbelieveably devistating.

Help her. It is don't starve Together, if I wanted to play alone I won't play dst.

Yeah, and she will burn your base... Griefers are not here to play with you, they are here to play against you... Have you never played on a dedicaced server ? Really ?

You know, in a lot of post-apocalyptic fiction, there's always that one guy. You know, the one who's extremely naive. The one who gets himself or everyone killed. The guy who thinks that trusting the sinister looking character with the evil mustache, creepy grin, and keeps a knife handy.

Sometimes, that creepy dude isn't bad at all, just misunderstood. (majority of the time, they are definitely bad though)

I think that sums up Willow at this point. They definitely look extremely suspicious, and on rare occasions, are actually good. It's just a matter of excercising caution when one approaches.

I usually make this rule: If they beeline for your chests/icebox and don't bother to say "hi," they are trouble. If they are friendly as soon as you spot them, give 'em the benefit of the doubt.

I'm following every fresh spawn characters during 1 days on my server, not only Willow. Generally, I'm relatively safe... Except when I'm afk for some minutes : my base burn, like a lot of trees... So, don't go for a pee when you're hosting a server xD
