$200 Speedrun Tournament - Four Prizes Being Given Out

Recommended Posts

I am announcing what I believe to be the first speedrun tournament with cash prize done in the western Don't Starve Together community. This will be hosted by the speedrun.com moderators and sponsored by community members.

The boss this tournament is centered around is the Original Unnerfed Toadstool. This version of Toadstool was only in the game for about one week, during September 2016. The Original Unnerfed Toadstool had the following stats:
156,500 health
Starting damage of 100 per boom shroom
Starting attack speed of one attack every 3.5 seconds
Starting attack range of 7
Starting speed of 0.6
Three upgrades caused by the number of sporecaps, increasing damage, range, and speed to the following:
| damage: 120, 150, 250
| attack speed: 3, 2.5, 2
| movement speed: 0.8, 1.2, 3.2
| A flee time of 300 seconds, or 5 minutes, in which Toadstool will burrow into the ground, ending the fight

-- Note: Sporecaps do not provide damage resistance in this version

This fight has been nearly entirely forgotten, partially due to how long ago it was around, and partially the small window of time the fight was available to players. Only one recorded speedrun of this boss was recorded, completed by Joeshmocoolstuff.

This tournament will have two categories to compete in. There will be a cash prize for 1st place, 2nd place, and 3rd place in the first category, and a single cash prize in the secondary category.
Category 1: Fastest boss kill. The only goal is speed. Kill the Original Unnerfed Toadstool as quickly as you can. All cheese and all exploits allowed. Cheats and mods are strictly banned, server or client.
1st Place: $100 USD paid through Pay-Pal or digital Steam gift cards.
2nd Place: $50 USD paid through Pay-Pal or digital Steam gift cards.
3rd Place: $25 USD paid through Pay-Pal or digital Steam gift cards.

Category 2: Most creative boss kill, done in a speedrun. The goal is to have the most unique kill of the boss, using unconventional methods or new strategies that haven't been seen for. The goal here is for the player to create their own strategy, and do it in a timely manner. Cheats and mods are strictly banned, server or client.

Prize: $25 USD worth of DST skins.

Both of these Categories will be done in solo unseeded worlds. Co-op is banned and seeding worlds is also prohibited. I strongly urge you to share the information about this tournament with anyone who may be interested, we want competition and we want creativity. I hope this could bring some attention to the amazing history of Don't Starve Together and all of its unique additions it has had over the years.

Further rules, details, and more specifics about the tournament will be found in the official DST speedrun.com discord.

THIS POST HAS BEEN EDITED - BIG CHANGES TO THE PRIZE POOL

It is kind of strange to me that coop is banned, given that that was definitely the original intention of the fight's design. I would have absolutely done this had it been designed around coop purely for the potential teamwork and creative strategies.

we just can't afford a prize for another category :( also since it's a small tournament splitting players between multiple categories would result in less competition

Initial observations:

You could probably get enough marble for 2 suits from chess setpieces and glommer statue, rather than going to the ruins for armour like Joe did.

As for weapons, getting 4 tentacle spikes seems much faster than finding living trees and going to the ruins for thulecite clubs. If you go through your 4 tentacle spikes and he isn't dead, you can craft a hambat to finish him off.

Before I start doing runs, I'll probably test out if tentacle spikes, marble suits and bunny men will be enough.

He starts the Toadstool fight at 1:34:40 and kills him at 1:38:40, so that gives a minute of leeway with the slightly lower dps of tentacle spikes. However, said dps could be mitigated via animation cancelling.

My Strategy, (keep in mind I haven't done any testing):

Load into the world and collect lots of grass, carrots, berries and pig skin. On your way to pig king try and get at least 4 rocks, 9 marble and 2 light bulbs. Arrive at PK, hammer down lots of pig houses for pigskin and mine 3 marble from the glommer statue. Craft a science machine, alchemy engine, hambat, football helmet, marble suit, lanturn, backpack, shovel. Now you have crafted 1 of all the recipes you will using, you have no more need for alchemy engines and science machines for the rest of the run. Head to the swamp, (hopefully you find more marble), kill tentacles with your hambat until you have 4-5 tentacle spikes. Head into the caves to find the toadstool spawner. Along the way try and find as many bunny villages as possible. Once found, make your way back to the bunneymen to assemble your army. Fight the toadstool in the exact manner Joe did, except using tentacle spikes, football helmets and marble suits. Hopefully this will be much quicker than his route of going to the ruins and back.

The big issue with co-op speedrun is that it is much less often a show of skill, but instead a show of who hast the most friends. It is also very hard to verify a co-op run is not cheated.

So how do you plan to give Joeshmocoolstuff his 50$.

If only I could

@Third Porkus

quick question: how many of these tournaments have you hosted in the past?

I believe the title says this is the first one, but I plan on doing this every one or two months

I wonder... Are you going to use an old version of dst or make a mod to re-add it to the current game?

yes, this is going to be done on a downpatched version of the game, instructions are included in the tournament rules on the server

OMG it's unnerfed Toadstool. Little video can be found now and I can recall that overcrowding it with 6 Wolfgang is the only way to defeat it (Voltgoat Chaud-Froid doen't exist then).

Urban myths says that when it summons trees, it won't get damage reduction but instead receives more damage. Is that true?

Correct, Joeshmocoolstuff incorrectly claimed it to be 1.5x damage in his video but it's actually a massive x4 damage (possibly even x5 according to the patch notes) which is what makes the fight possible

So unnerfed Toadstool becomes extremely deadly but also extremely vulnerable to damage? If that is the case it is extremely interesting.

yep, not a lot of people seem to be aware of just how much more damage he took

$50 super thanks YouTube comment. Maybe he will log back into his YouTube channel and then we can playfully harass him.
