Unmentioned Beta Change??

Recommended Posts

I was just in a test world testing some stuff out and while messing around with god mode and free crafting on, I found something that seemingly hasn't been mentioned or talked about yet at all with the beta???

Apparently boats can fall off waterfalls now! I had god mode enabled here for testing purposes but you'd also drown along with the boat. I'm not sure how I feel about this personally, it seems extremely punishing especially when you might not be aware when the edge of the world is approaching, but I find the concept to be really cool too. What do you guys think?

totally destroying the boat is too punishing but maybe making us spawn in a random place in the world with low hp on the boat a we with the drowning penalty can work

i still prefer the shadow hands but everything would be better than the invisible wall we have now

as funny as this looks, i do think i would appreciate some sort of disclaimer somewhere more visible than the gaslighting tag that doesnt show up on the main thread selection because its the third one so you arent just... spreading false information. This kind of thing can be very harmful. Especially with something with such plausibility as this.

Wait.. in shipwrecked dlc most biomes seemingly appeared to be covered by an area of heavy fog where the player sails through the foggy area in the water and gets spit back out into a new location.

The video posted here is most likely fake.. BUT- I can’t help but laugh thinking about how funny it would be to have falling off waterfalls function how fog did for SW.

Yeah, I almost excitedly shared this with some friends before reading Primalflower's post here and realizing it was fake, and I have to ask... why do this? I'll admit, a few years back I also thought jokes like this were funniest when presented with little indication that they aren't real, but... eventually the realization set in that all it did was trick neurodivergent or just plain gullible people into thinking a cool thing was real, followed by them either spreading misinfo or being disappointed to find out it's fake, and why would anyone want to do that on purpose?

I always imagined that if one day the boat were to fall, it would literally turn upside down (as if it was slipping off the edge of the map) and the moment it turned, all the structures would be destroyed at the same time, so there would be no need to animate them falling off the boat too.

The stream of the waterfall should pull the boat too.

If this change is intended, then so should be going close to Water/Abyss margin and still pressing on: dropping player in those hazards, either insta-killing or inflicting massive penalties (especially for Abyss drop - think on lines of 2/3 of Health shaven off and 0-Sanity-set). While it does look logical for mentioned occurrences to happen, am not so sure about their fair-play for bulk player-base. Balls deep or none at all I believe.

Jokes aside, I'd like to see the Shipwrecked mechanic in the game, where you appear on the opposite side of the map after sailing off the edge.

that would fix the biggest problem of dst sea without needing to split the main island

Uhm… how?????

the entire point of splitting the main island is so that you HAVE to sail to find resources on other islands.

In DST Aside from Lunar, Pearls Island or Moon Quay Island- All your resources are right there all cluttered together within walking distance (walking distance meaning  no matter the distance you walk.. you can reach the area..)

However in the single player Hamlet DLC ponds would spawn- tiny little mostly empty ponds but with one very important purpose: You needed to build some sort of boat to get across to the other side.

Even if sailing out of bounds spit you back out into another random area- it wouldn’t solve the problem everything’s all gathered in one large cluster of land. (Minus the few mentioned above)

I don’t know about you- but I’d like to set sail into a jungle biome where Bee Queens spawn has been relocated to this island- so BEFORE I can attempt to fight BQ, I would first need to build a boat.

And NOW with the cheaper Grass Boats- there’s no reason not to bust the main world apart to force sailing.

as world setting would be amazing but i dont think is a smart move to change that much the main game. Just see how much people raged about other less impactful changes even if were for good

Speaking of splitting the mainland into islands: I generated a world yesterday (beta branch) where I got a big "mosaic island" and a tiny empty island. (I don't use any world generation mods.) The big island was still connected to the mainland with a wormhole pair.

Also, the lunar island spawned right next to this all, but that's just business as usual at this point, this is the 5th time it happened to me. I've never seen, however, a mainland biome spawning as a separate island before. Maybe this is a secret change with the new cheap boats in mind?

(Even the portal managed to spawn on top of an angry frog, so I spawned in with 20 less health and two dropped items.)
