Why do people hate the idea of a DST spin-off

Recommended Posts

What I like so much in DST is the loop gameplay of fight-loot-gather-craft-build-improve-expand etc. I like the lore and character, it give more identity to the game but it's not like I care that much about it. I dont need any type of spin off to deeply explore the lore, I just want the devs to focus on DST and keep improving it.

Im not against a good spin off but I wont request one.

I have 5000+ hours in DST, it's my favorite game, I still think it's a garbage game, at least compared to what I imagine it could be. It's just that there's no competition, I'm not a whale investor and I'm no programmer. Part of me says the DST Style is a recipe that could bury the MMO genre. I keep my fingers crossed for a day where some Jeff Bezos type moron pays Klei $25 - $50 Million to take DST to another level...or something. Hopefully Klei is earning enough to expand. These silly 'New World's are a waste of resources, as far as I can tell. I keep my eyes on the Open World Survival Crafting Game genre (like Valheim and whatnot), but I don't see any upcoming competition. Sorry, Valheim.

I wouldn't play DST at all if there were no Mods. Mod Developers save the game, for me at least.

This might just be me, but if there weren't tutorial video makers, I would have quit the game a long time ago. The game tells players nothing at all and ignorance makes this game nearly unplayable, to me.

All that being said I don't hate the idea of a DST Spin Off. I'd like to see a "DST Style" Pokemon Open World Crafting Survival game. Who hates the idea of a DST Spin-Off anyway? Klei Cultist Nutjobs?

The reasons are:

a) New Home had left a sour taste in the mouths of many (but that one was already mentioned a lot and now that I think oof wast that game supposed to be released last year )

b) The focus of a game should be entertaining but also fitting to the game franchise it is from, if they just make any type of game but with the DS/T characters and mobs and if the game could work with different characters then why bother.

Of course getting lore would be nice but that should come second.

Do you think Klei is that bad at writing? I think if they make a "character" and "story" focus spin-off they would focus on character personality and backstory more than anything else, they would probably give us new information about them and make them feel a bit more flesh out the cast a bit more, and also give Charlie actual personality.

Im not saying that they are bad writers just that they should be careful with all their products.

Are you craving a DST RPG?

No, I just crave DST media of any type, preferably with a lot of texts, dialogue, and writing.

DST Comic Books, DST POP! Figures, DST Shirts, DST The Movie, DST Fruit Snacks, DST Lunch Box, DST Socks, DST Bumper Stickers, DST VR, DST Cartoon Series

Tsunami of DST Content :)

Wouldn't it take time away from working on this game tho? I think that's most peoples concern. There is still sooo much they can do with this game and they can't do both, they are slammed with the amount of work they put into DST as it is. I dunno just my opinion

That is why I think the best spin-off are visual novels, they super easy to make, have fewer things to program and it popular.

I would like all of Kleis energy to go into DST, but at the end of the day a fellas gotta earn a dollar and whatnot. Whatever works for them. I'm sure if it made sense for Klei to focus strictly on DST, they would.

I would rather get a true PS5/Xbox Series X/S edition of DST then to have Klei’s developers branch off and make a game that plays nothing like DST..

If your lucky enough to play on PC you have access to Beautiful Mods to expand your game with new mobs, new weapons, new resources, Flora, Fauna, Biomes and more- and I’ve seen some very pretty looking biomes from mod creators- such as Cherry Forest mod,

5552A8B1-AC24-4FCF-AD88-218B076B7687.png.6fb2c5ffc82462026c0d8b2b7ddc04af.png

or Architect mod that before we worry about some DST MOBA I’d rather see all that mod stuff put in the game in some capacity or another first..

The more of Klei’s team that can focus on the games they already have with plans for updates/new content, the better that content will “hopefully” be.

When I say a PS5/Series X/S version of the game I mean something that takes advantage of those new consoles, you see games like SoD and GTA get more detailed Scenery such as more flowers, grass, bushes etc and to see something like THAT in DST you’d probably see crows visually landing in tree tops like they do in Klei’s Animated Shorts, and Spiders climbing up and down their nests fighting each other over the nest as seen Here:

I mean sure a “Spin-Off” might be very successful who knows.. But most people would rather see more DST, or an X/S/PS5 Enhanced version of DST..

here’s a few more examples- this is what fog and lightning in the Hamlet DLC look like compared to what’s currently in DST..

And HERE is an example of Before/After completely Redesigned look of the Oasis Biome:

Before-

And if by some chance all of that isn’t enough to convince you that DST can be Elevated to new heights.. then here is a Concept Art myself and the rest of the community contributed towards making to show case a bigger, better, DST/ DS 2..

To Summarize: There’s so so much “More” Klei can do with Dont Starve before they should even CONSIDER some strange Spin-Off game..

And while yes: NewHome has left a sour taste in everyone’s mouths on the “Don’t Starve based Spin-off” forefront.. More people would Prefer Klei work on more content for DST/ DS 2/ Dont Starve For X/S & PS5 before Klei moved on to do something like Dont Starve Kart Racing.

Now do not get me wrong: I would probably play a Dont Starve MOBA… but then again- Why waste an opportunity to just do a brand crossover with something like SMITE instead? I would LOVE to See DST x Smite or DST x Fortnite..

I would love to see Wilson running around in Fortnite with a Hambat, or a Tentacle Spike Pickaxe skin..

And there is PLENTY of gods in Smite to choose from that would best fit a DST character..

Why pull the Devs away from making more content for DS/DST/DS 2/ DS Next Gen to create some spinoff game & “potentially” waste the opportunity for a Crossover with another popular game?

THAT is why “I” Personally despise the thought of a DS Spinoff.

Now as far as other forum users? I don’t know.. I doubt anyone’s going to write you a book about their thoughts like I just took the time to do though.

And if you actually took the time to read this- Thank You.. You Sir or Madam are a true warrior to stick it out to the end. <3

Because DST spin-off could actually help the story and make the game more popular, the crossover does nothing with the story, and by making a spin-off you could potentially make more money and help make more people know DST, also there are things that other genres could do that game like DST could not.

Console DST players have it the worst. Between being limited to a Controller Only, plus No Access To Mods, the restrictions are heavy duty for them. If I didn't have PC DST, I'd never play it. Playing on PC also gives me access to Steams Controller Customization Menu, which helps me get a grip on DST Game Play when I'm using a Controller by using Action Sets, plus I can switch to my Mouse and Keyboard for more detailed Game Play if need be. None of that is available for Console players, as far as I know. :(

There was a game for PS3 called 'Fat Princess', which DST reminded me of when I discovered it. Fat Princess was a Capture-The-Flag Style MOBA Online game that was on PS Game Store. There were like 10 Classes you could choose from, each with their own talent, and the Camera Angle was DST-like. That game was freaking amazing, yet somehow it just disappeared into the Console Graveyard. If Klei made a DST Game like that, or better yet, included that Mode in the main DST game as a $50 expansion that didn't affect the main game at all, I'd buy it right away. Shut up and take my money!

Also, I like how SMITE does collaborations with brands for their characters and skins, like Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Avatar: The Last Air Bender, bunch of others. I don't know how/if DST could incorporate that type of branding, but I'd like to see a Teenage Mutant Ninja Snurtle

I think DST’s setting is very interesting and cool, so I’d be down for more games which took place in the constant. There are so many ideas you can explore, some of which don’t fit in DST’s gameplay loop and would require being in their own spin off game.

I don’t understand why newhome is being brought up here. Sure, it’s bad, but that doesn’t mean all other spin offs would be bad. Heck, it’s not even developed by klei!

All I would want is a metroidvania that explores the ancient civilization. It'll end on a sad note which fits perfectly with metroidvanias. Sure they could go the Blasphemous route which could be btitersweet with cosmic horror and other dimensions opening up in the final conflict but that;s the best way/direction I can see for a Don't starve spinoff. Let's get to learn about the downfall of the ancients through gameplay.

I don't think DST really needs a spin-off, the series is centered on the survival genre and works well because of the setting but in almost every other genre it would feel out of place. Not necessarily that it couldn't work, there are examples of spin-offs/sequels that are different from the original one, but it would feel forced to make a new game with a new genre and if it also were to be a survival then what would be the point in making a new game.

I think that, apart from the Pigs/Merm rivalry and the Ancients, we get enough lore to give us an idea and let's us speculate which I think is a great way for storytelling, allowing the fans make connections based on the clues the devs give us (like it was done in FnaF), it is never explicitly told to us that WX-78 was built by Wagstaff or that Maxwell is Wendy and Abigail's uncle but is aknowledge by the community thanks to the clues in quotes, shorts and other media.

What's with this Charlie slander?

5 hours ago, Waoling said:

Yeah, but it wouldn't hurt to have a small spin-off game.

If the DST team were to make an spin-off that would meant they would have to divide the team or center on one project which is not really an optimal way to manage a series (for example Overwatch started to have less updates once part of the team had to work on the sequel) or having a different studio with a different vision to work on it (which is pretty much what is New Home).
