GrapeVruit Posted January 8, 2022 Share Posted January 8, 2022 Out of all the characters in Don't Starve Together, Wickerbottom is my all time favorite. With her books being able to spawn tentacles from thin air, regrow grass and twigs within a blink of an eye, and put mobs to sleep with just two papyrus and nightmare fuel, no other character can really top that for me (except for Wanda of course). However, as awesome as my favorite little librarian is, I can't help but wonder what Klei could be cooking up for her refresh, and the anticipation is killing me. So what better way to spend that time than to list out some potential ideas? One idea that I thought would be interesting to experiment with was allowing Wickerbottom to publish different variants of her books. What if instead of reading The End is Nigh and having it summon 17 lightning strikes, it could summon 5, but each strike would deal 125 damage each, a version of Horticulture abridged that could grow up to 9 different mushrooms without the need for a mushroom planter, or a variation of On Tentacles that could spawn smaller tentacles which attacked at a faster rate but had only 100 hp. I feel like these changes could give Wickerbottom's books a little bit more extended utility than she has now. I also had some ideas for a different crafts Wickerbottom could make in the books tab, those being a bookshelf and two pairs of reading glasses. The bookshelf would be a structure that would allow Wickerbottom to store her books more easily, having 12 item slots compared to the 9 of the chest. Players would be able to read any books that are perched upon the bookshelf, giving them a boost to their sanity as well as a chance to learn a new crafting recipe, akin to a blueprint. The two reading glasses would be able to change the way Wickerbottom interacts with her books. The first pair of glasses would allow Wickerbottom to read her books at a faster rate (0.8 - 1 second) and the second pair would be able to enhance the effects of her books (spawning 1-2 extra tentacles or growing 4-6 extra crops). These glasses would take up the head slot, replacing the default glasses on Wickerbottom's face, and have 3 uses each. Finally, I thought it would be fun to tweak some of Wickerbottom's other books, mainly On Tentacles and The End is Nigh! First up is the End is Nigh! Out of all of Wickerbottom's other books, TEiN has the most limited uses. Aside from overcharging WX-78 or electrifying volt goats, it's not worth using in the slightest due to the book's destructive and random behavior. Even if you were planning on using it's destructiveness on mobs, the damage from the lightning is so minuscule that you might as well be using your fists. So instead of having to rely on a dice roll for the lightning to strike mobs, you were able to control where the lightning went via a ring? When right clicking on the book, instead of reading it, Wickerbottom would be able to select an area where the lightning would strike and unleash the thunder. And instead of it being able to deal a whopping 2 damage, it would instead be able to deal 51. On Tentacles is a lot more straight forward, any tentacles that are summoned from the book will be neutral to Wickerbottom and other players, sticking out slightly when near the player. They then can be attacked, though any other tentacles nearby will attack as well. Well there you have it! These are just a few ideas I've thought of for Wickerbottom's character refresh. Before I end this off I just want to say that I am not a game developer, I not well versed in proper game balancing or how these ideas could work out in the long run, I just wanted to share what I thought about a potential character refresh for my favorite character in the game. Are there any other things that you would like to see for Wickerbottom in the future? Any feedback to some of these changes? Please let me know, I'd love to hear it! Before we even consider her refresh Klei needs to make set pieces easier to obtain. Could be a really cool end game ability where you can choose one set piece from the ancient gateway or something. Maybe a set piece "seed" that drops from CG. Just like a star callers staff but you can drop a powerful aoe bolt of lighting at target location, or summon a tentacle exactly where you want to. Also would be funny to see wicker slap people with her books too. She needs a bunch of fun new books and insomniac, sensitive stomach/old age downsides cranked up. Shes also the prime candidate for an interesting and unique sanity mechanic similar to Wormwood’s and Wanda’s hp mechanics. Like going into negative sanity when using books past 0 and unlocking something new while in this higher state of ‘insanity’. Mysterious box Posted January 9, 2022 Share Posted January 9, 2022 As much as people are joking about it a book meter of sorts does sound like a good idea as you could get away with making much more interesting books balanced by the meter besides it would also give wicker a reasonable downside since not being able to sleep is a very silly downside when very few people sleep because they find it wasteful or just don't know you can. And if Klei opts to go for a nerf, she could even start with the enlightenment stat and would need to craft a book to be able revert to the sanity stat. I think a nerf to Wickerbottom would be unnecessary but I think this would at least result in an interesting gameplay which would be on par with her knowing many things.
