Salt Water purpose

Recommended Posts

EDIT: This original post was incorrect. The oil well accepts the salt water and keeps pumping but no oil comes out. Thought it was working as most buildings croak and take damage when incorrect materials are supplied. The oil well appears to still work with salt water as the pump graphic is operating, but it doesn't produce oil...   Thinking this was the intent by the designer.

However, there appears to bug in that natural gas still comes out and pressure still builds. So you can run the oil well forever with 20KG of salt water, but will only get natural gas in return.

ORIGINAL POST:

The use for salt water seems a mystery, but found something tonight. Salt water can be used by oil wells. Maybe some folks already knew this, but didn't see this spelled out in the game docs, in either wiki or the online ONI database.

Hurray for salt water into oil wells!

The in game manual says "clean water", guess that only excludes polluted water. Anyhow, pretty happy with this cause I have 3 salt water geysers on current.

I thought it was just a "needs to be refined" water type that gave salt as a byproduct. Its good to hear it works in an oil well though. The geysers pour out at 90c so that seems to be the ideal use. Don't have to spend effort desalinating it. If you don't need/want the salt (table salt is nice) you get more effective water out of processing the oil.

Hey, that's really good information! I didn't know it could be used in oil wells, this whole time my oil wells had to share my steam vent water with my electrolyzer setups. :) I wonder what else you can pump salt water into...

Anyway I usually desalinate my salt water, which will still be over 90° C, so it's off to an oil well or electrolyzer after that, I don't bother cooling it down. Getting the salt out of the desalinator and refining it into table salt both require duplicant operation, which is unfortunate since table salt only gives +1 morale, but it looks nice on the tables and I enjoy providing luxuries for my dupes. My desalinators are automated to only run when the steam vents go dormant, so it's more of a backup water supply for me but I do go through a lot of water.

A quick note since it is not readily obvious (I had to go searching to figure out how to put salt on a table):

Once you have salt you have to put it through the rock crusher to make table salt.   Then you can "store it" on a table.

Now I have to go and do it in the game :D

I don't use tablesalt in my current colony, but in my last it worked it like that:

Tables store up to 5g. Duplicants use 1g per meal which results in a morale bonus of +1.

I personally think that it's even less worth it than showers, which I don't use either. I rely on Frostburger and Decor for Morale.

@Argelle : I'd guess that your saltbin has a higher priority than your mess tables.

I'll have to try this again, but I'm pretty sure it's not a morale bonus of one, but a food bonus of 1. This is a much stronger morale bonus.

if it does, please report what level 7 food gives for morale ( meaning salted frost burgers)

The salt water geyser puts out like twice as much water as normal geysers so that is pretty great.

my current map has 2 and they provide all water for everything... electro, berries, oil, peppers, everything.  I did not bother with steam geysers at all.

bobbles, please read my edited original post. My first statement about oil wells using salt water was not entirely correct. While salt water can go into an oil well, no oil is produced. Only natural gas. Seems a bug that:

1. The oil well accepts salt water but doesn't use it

2. The graphic, power joules draw still continue even though no oil produced

3. Natural gas is produced.

Bugs aside, an oil well SHOULD allow salt water to be perfectly legit. Oil wells use salt water  in real life. From my understanding of oil wells, salt water is preferred.
