Is Malbatross a challenge?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I don´t play DST RoT Salty dog beta, but I know there is some boss Malbatross and I would like to know if Malbatross is a challenge or not.I know it's still in beta and many things can change, but I'd like to know what it looks like.I would try it, but now we have a world with my friends, so I don't want to try the beta.

Thanks in advance:)

Well at the current state of the Salty Sea Dogs beta, Malbatross is considered more of an annoyance due to it being easily de-aggroed and leaving the fight. I would not recommend fighting it in this current state, but I do believe she would be revised plenty of times throughout the beta and be released to the Mainbranch as a challenge.

This is what it looks like: [25%Chance of spawning at Sea near Fish Shoals after day 28(I think)]

Bringing a boomerang or two is almost mandatory just to draw its aggro. Otherwise you're going to have a long, bad time. Expect to have your mast destroyed during the fight, so bring some oars. The boss is in winter and you constantly get splashed with waves which raises your wetness, so you need to have a way to stay warm. I found that the Houndius Shootius is amazing for this fight. The Houndius will never die because it regens HP so fast, and it deals good damage to Malbatross at range. Winona's catapults are pretty good, but they can potentially die fast because they don't regen HP nearly as quick as the Houndius. He's pretty challenging and definitely a unique kind of fight which I really enjoy. The rewards are poop tho.

One thing that is dumb is that Malbatross has a % chance to drop feather every time he is hit. So that means if you kill it in very few hits, you will get very few feathers. This happened to me when I killed him the first time and I didn't even get enough feather to craft the feathery mast. I wasn't even Wolfgang or Wig. I imagine a mighty Wolfgang will never get enough feathers to make the mast because he can kill the Malbatross in very few hits. He'd have to kill 2 Malbatrosses. This sucks big time because from my testing and messing around, Malbatross only spawns 8 days into every winter. Hopefully the feather RNG system gets changed.

Wimpy Wolfgang is the new meta. :wilson_wink:

It's not Hard, it's not Easy, it's ANNOYING,

The Bird has to be found at a few randomly selected fish shoals, and its only mechanic is to push your boat away while lightly damaging it with waves, the bird never directly damages you. The bird also destroys Sails with a dash attack, problem is that the Bird can also dive into the water escaping a small distance away and continuing to spam waves to push you away.

You don't need a lot of gear, an oar, 2 sails, a steering wheel and a few logs to fix the boat should be enough as well as some kind of weapon. Sadly the waves break physics and ignore the Anchor so that one is useless.

I wish the boss would actually damage you too, otherwise I think its fine

Malbatross does damage to the player. Sometimes he just misses because the boat is moving. Malbatross does 75 damage (150 to mobs) with tail swipes, and its charge does 75 damage. The waves that occur do 0 damage to the boat, they only cause player wetness and push the boat. His tail swipe is what hurts the boat.

If you go for it, prepared, it's a sea deerclops with boat movements and degradation functions instead of freezing player... with more health :)

Since this year will be adding some great content to ocean, its mast blueprint could be interesting when advanted sealing will be worthy

I for one expected something else from this Malbatross boss-thing. Maybe another boss-mob will be like that - yet as of now I highly doubt it. I also expected some form of more-or-less mandatory world-event (perhaps akin to Aporkalypse) requiring you to visit main Moon Island to interact with it in some way, not just purely optional content. And ofc am a proponent of some form of, again, world event that ups the general difficulty in DST (think on the lines of Wall-of-Flesh from Terraria) and gives a sense of real progression, like world evolving with the players - more complex weather and Seasons with effects on vegetation and animals, more interesting randomization, AI of mobs goes up a notch for a bit more complex patterns of attack, defense and whatnot etc etc. But frankly I tend to think this will remain just wishful thinking by now. Probably Return of Them will be a "softcore" implementation of SW-like elements in DST, all being some form of reskin or light new optional mechanics. C'est la vie..

Good to know. In my test fights I never got hit before giving up. But I got wet.

It's an interesting fight due to the new mechanics, but with no way to effectively combat being pushed around it can become quite tedious and, as others have said, annoying.

Use a boomerang for phase 2. That way Malbatross will come to you instead of you going to it. Boomerang has a large range of attack, large enough where the waves it summons will barely hit you during that phase.

Also, to stop it from moving your boat, having an anchor placed down will do the job of keeping your boat still.

Example fight here with minimal gear.
