For the most part, lead is supremely useful for anything that doesn't have operating temperature. That mostly means wires, but many sensors will only fail when the material melts. It saves a ton of refining time and is a fast way to kick start the transition to mid game.

Lead has a "low" melting point which makes it a good material to set up high temperature shenanigans. I haven't seen anything built using molten lead yet.

Just don't uh...use it to make pipes.

Don't worry, I don't let my dupes drink petroleum, only super coolant and visco gel as dessert which as study (sponsored by "Leading the world to lead) has shown that they are improved by this awesome metal. The sheen the dupes acquire from this high grade meal is just fabulous. Blue is the new black.

as far as i know, lead isnt affected by the "metal rich" world trait.

Correct, like the yaml file reads (so it is easily mod-able) it only affects the 5 metal ores (Copper, Iron, Gold, Wolframite, Aluminium) and this applies to Metal Poor as well. Either doubling mass + 50% more bandwidth or decreasing those to 80%. Together in a world they should result in 1.6x mass and 1.2x width.

They don't compete for the same range: molten lead stays liquid as low as 325C, and stays liquid at magma volcanoes output temperature. You can use it to keep pulling heat out of solidified magma for petroleum generation comfortably, where no other liquid in the game can.
