Old lighting/shadow system

Recommended Posts

When I saw how beautiful it looks when map is half dark and each your light source is clearly visible I simply couldn't stay calm. It's really fascinating when you can clearly see where is livable area of your base (because of light) and where is technical passways and rooms, when outer parts of the base, where is no light, looks a little bit gloomy. It create really cozy feeling when you are playing.  I thought that you can adjust light and maybe shadows in the Options > Graphics to create such atmosphere, but there is no such options in the game.
Is there other ways to do it or will it be implemented into the game? Why it was removed in first place?

My guess would be that it caused to much lag.

Actually i can`t tell if the screenshot wasn`t photoshopped. Look at the distillers at the right and the slime below. It`s pretty bright with no light around. Don`t get me wrong i think it looks great but was this ever in the game or is it just photoshop?

I'm still holding out hope we'll eventually get a more robust light/dark system.  Mechanically, increased stress accumulation or slower production for working in the dark seems fair enough.  Aesthetically, something along the lines of what's shown in the pics in the OP is just what I want.

Hrhr, i just wanted to post this thread here in the other ^^

The OP of a newer thread is in a position to do a forum search before posting a topic. So they deserve a scold.

Afterwards everybody can decide which thread is better suited for the discussion.

If only there were a few more cheep light sources and no heat from lamps it would be really cool. The game has deep and interesting water and gas mechanics, which make it very realistic, but has very simple and shallow light mechanic. I love the idea to dig and explore in half dark asteroid (if surroundings were totaly black it would be too hard to find geysers and to explore).
Also it can be a good reason to deepen sound system and make gamers more to depend on listening to find something. It will really give full survival expirience.

I realy enjoy the water and gas mechanics in this game but they are so far of realistic, maybe even the least realistic mechanics in game.

You obviously did not get the point of my post.

It is common etiquette on forums to use the forum search before posting. "scold" was chosen to deliver the message with the wink of an eye on an easy note. But i guess this got lost in translation.

For one thing it's super hard to clearly see what you are digging when out of the base. When I'm looking for algea I won't spend hours hovering over each of the tiles or squeezing my eyes to see the texture.

EDIT: It's worth to consider making the cursor glow with light around it. It won't take back the atmosphere of total darkness and stress management (because you can't physically escort every dupe around with your light), but still allow for resource finding.

Could give shinebugs more game impact, but they have to limit maximum light value first..

A headlamp built into miners' helmets could help.  They could also include an option to disable dynamic light/darkness for those who want to avoid the hassle.

That and @Tobrukx suggestion with glowing cursor (research/expand), so many options! Would be similar to DS, prevent lurking in the dark, because other creatures are waiting there. Would make a blackout interesting. Stress increase / damage panic - doom *dream*

We could use another station for these helmets for early-mid game before making exosuits (which would have headlights as well). Dupes would go through the station in the desired direction, pick the headlight and return it while coming back. It could be made out of simple ore/mineral and the station would charge the headlights with power (for ease of use - one charge would last indefinitely until returned to station).

Please do not overcomplicate things. ^^
For me it would completely ok, when builder and digger helmets would have one lamp integrated.
Loading the lamp battery would be a nice addition (later update/patch).
Perhaps some sort of inductive tile, when dupes walk over it, they get some "bzzzt" from static, to recharge.
Loading station would be too static for my taste.

Maybe you could try to change your graphic setting. eg. increase display saturation and contrast. Im not sure if it will meet your demanding, but it will bring some changes.

Is that, what you did with your "rolling" signature?

the lighting effect and the seed itself look amazing. I've messaged about it myself. It's incredible. I went back to find my steam password so i can get to the files. Amazing work. I watched it for a whole min. the first time seeing it.

I did not realize you could watch people play on steam, I kinda thought it was just a twitch thing. God, I'm old.
