The Gorge key itself appears to be made of Bloodstone. The favors which charge it are made of opals. The Key is possibly being charged by an energy similar to the forging of the Mooncaller's Staff, ie the 'light' to Their 'dark'. And the Moonstone event does set a precedent for that energy being able to charge up gems, particularly with Maxwell's quote on the Mooncaller's Staff. Maybe previous suspicions about the original Key being a 'dark' gem and Opal being the 'light' counterpart weren't far off.
