avc15
I mean, at least they turn phosphorite (extremely plentiful early on) into food pretty directly. But at 100g per cracked egg, that's a lot of dupe time to put into each omelette. 1 omelette / 10 eggs; .67 eggs / grooming; (15 groomings per omelette ! yuck) I guess they'll definitely be the winning source of Lime (but I don't know what that's for yet) -- edit: I feel like shinebugs were intended as an easy way to provide light for farming berries, and decor for your whole base. But, it's not effective. Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/91956-are-shine-bugs-just-kind-of-bad-now/ Share on other sites
ShadowOfALegend
you can get phosphorite from dreekos which should be able to sustain shine bugs and their light emitting capabilities is nothing to laugh at when you have access to solar panels Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/91956-are-shine-bugs-just-kind-of-bad-now/#findComment-1049786 Share on other sites
WanderingKid
They're supposed to be bad, like Terrariums. They're not for power players, they're warm ups for normals. LiveYourDreams
Does anyone know how to spawn a shine bug? The last one I had on the map is gone for some reason? Lilalaunekuh
Some nice suggestions: - Cracked Eggs can become cooked if they get hot enough - Shine bug drop just 100g of raw egg, so they are perfect for automated cooking - 1 Drecko can sustain more than 3 full shine bug stables Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/91956-are-shine-bugs-just-kind-of-bad-now/#findComment-1049863 Share on other sites

(sorry for side note) Esc -> Options -> Enable Sandbox Return to game, click the Sandbox Tools toggle button at the top left. Click the Spawner tool in the lower right, navigate to Shinebug, click as many times as you want Shinebugs. Note that there are 2 Ruins templates that contain Shinebugs, as well. One in the Ice Biome with a Vending Machine, as well as 3 in a single pocket with a couple of Computers in the Caustic Biome. The Caustic one you kind of need to dig out immediately upon locating it, though, because there is not enough space for them. They immediately become Glum, which means they will not produce an egg, so they will go extinct. I'm very curious what you are doing, as I don't understand your what you're seeing. I have a bunch of wild ones running around my base too, but I assume you're talking about tamed décor. Why would you ever tame them? Just set aside 12 (thanks for a set number) squares for a wild shine bug with the basic doors and let them be. Lilalaunekuh
Just a small addition: Shine Bugs stop glowing when they're overcrowded => If your bug lays his egg he gets overcrowded, so you need 24 tiles to keep one bug happy and shining all the time. Shines are 8 max, 8 + 1 Overcrowded (eggs), so 96/ranch is 12/bug. Not sure where the 24 comes in. Lilalaunekuh
According to ONI biology: - A shine bug needs 12 (not 8) tiles of space - A shine bug emits no light when overcrowded => A 4x4 space is enough to keep one shine bug alive, but you would need 24 tiles to keep the room continuously lit Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/91956-are-shine-bugs-just-kind-of-bad-now/#findComment-1049936 Share on other sites
Yunru
You have several sections to a room such that there's only one shine bug in a section, but their field of light overlaps. Soulwind
The change to egg mass was too much. I think they should either be set to 1/2 kg (so 2 per omelet) or if they really are supposed to be tiny like bugs, then they should need only 2-4 tiles of space each. PhailRaptor
I agree that it doesn't make a lot of sense for Shinebugs to need so much space. Their description even says that they like to congregate in groups. That's why they produce light in the first place -- to find each other. That isn't exactly a great source of power. You aren't going to be able to find enough wild shinebugs to power that which means you will have to deal with feeding and grooming them at which point you might as well just use a gerbil wheel. Mariilyn
We just need to make the most of what they have to offer. I currently keep my tamed shine bugs in the central hub of my base, where dupes very often walk through. It a huge space so its possible to breed a bunch of them. 8) No need to limit the room to 96 tiles, because they get groomed even if they aren't in a stable. Then I plan to fit solar panels in there and keep most shine bugs near them with a lure. Edit: Maybe not after all. I did a quick test in a sandbox map and 50 shine bugs above two panels could produce reliably only between 120-150 watts. But I would still keep them there for light, eggs, personal enjoyment and the satisfaction of not having to build any painting or statues in the living quarters. Miravlix
Rooms doesn't matter for shine bugs, so a room can be 210935890238475 for shine bugs. No point in limiting yourself to 96 stables. All the items still works without a stable, though it can be problematic for dreckos to path to sheering and grooming stations if you make them big.
