Sorry for not posting much lately. I've been sort of working on that cover, but I keep thinking of more BONUS CONTENT that I should add, and how the BONUS CONTENT will probably end up being better than the cover in the first place. However, the BONUS CONTENT is nothing without the cover, yanno?

Here's a sneak peak at some BONUS CONTENT.

  2. Gotta defame Woodie as much as possible.

Yes. Punish them for being charming. How DARE they be so likeable.

That's actually going to be Part Two of BONUS CONTENT. I think what I have so far is pretty funny, but I must withhold 'til I'm done the whole series, at least the ones that work best together. I gotta confess, I haven't actually started the cover yet. Mostly because of the fear of failure, but also because I'm having a lot fun with the other stuff.

4 hours ago, minespatch said:

Jesus Christ. Of course this exists.

Okay, here's the thing with librarians. They have a regular job and all that, sure, but they don't make a ton of money. Especially if they only work part-time hours. You know what career also doesn't make a ton of money? Writer/author. Especially if you're the author of Birds of the World. You're poor. Wickerbottom (theoretically speaking, I cannot confirm any of this) wants to uphold a respectable reputation and all that, but she also wants to be able to feed her cats. So she writes profitable content under several pen names, or possibly no name at all.

Okay, so far we have determined that Woodie made more money as a model than as a hardworking lumberjack and that Wickerbottom sustained herself by writing erotica. What next? What other dark secrets do these characters hold? What did Maxwell have to do during the lowest times of his magician career?

Anyway. Here's a little Explorer Wilson sketch just to say I upload stuff regularly.

Watched that trailer about fourteen million times in search of clues, but it turns out reading Sherlock Holmes books does not make you Sherlock Holmes.

Woodie was, of course, the last person to learn that the book somehow ended up in the Constant.

I'm crying this is too good! How did all this even come to fruition? I so headcanon Wicker to be a secret smut writer.

I cant wait to see this finished product! For some reason all I picture are those seductive firefighter/model calendars but with the dst crew. RIP

It starts when you draw Woodie as more handsome than you probably should. Things escalate from there.

I'm worried I'm gonna let everyone down with it, especially since I keep talking about it. And the calendar idea is hilarious. I mean, there are twelve months in the year and twelve DST characters, right? Though Wendy and Webber are minors and should probably be exempt.

I feel like I should remind people what Woodie actually looks like. His entire face is squashed together into about a third of his head space.

This part made me laugh.
Though I think some people might be legitimately pretty hairy,  where you can only see so much of their face. Part of the problem is Woodie has the hair draping down over his forehead. Certain skins of his have it shaved back where the forehead is visible again.

I like this drawing of Wilson from Hamlet. I wonder if that hat and sword will become available to us in the game as items?
I wonder if Maxwell had anything to do with Hamlet too. Like, I didn't see him anywhere in the trailer, unlike the SW trailers. Also, they gave us the explanation of how Wilson even got there - Hot air balloon. - Which we didn't get for Shipwrecked, he was just 'there.'
It's clearly not across any magical portal if he got their by physical, non-magical means... But if we don't get new characters and if I don't see Maxwell somewhere, I might guess Hamlet was less under the throne's authority?...

He was wearing the hat in the gameplay parts, so that'll most likely be available. I'm pretty sure he's just wielding a machete.

There will probably be another trailer when Hamlet releases, and so Maxwell still has time to make an appearance. The trailer gave me the idea that the Hamlet is a pretty isolated place, like it's in a very hard-to-access valley or something. Not that that really gives Maxwell a reason to ignore it. We don't really have an answer for that yet.

I love the trailer. The art direction is amazing (everything is pink, but it still looks so good!) And the first scene when Wilson is ascending, probably revelling in how genius he is for constructing a hot air balloon with nothing but wilderness supplies. Then-- HUBRIS IS A SIN, SONNY! smite

It's amazing how I still love it, considering the amount of times I've watched it.

Argh, okay, I know I complain about my own perfectionism all the time and you're probably tired of hearing it, but I built this thing up in my head way too much. It was going to be the funniest thing I ever painted. Except it wasn't, of course. My standards are much too high. But I'm tired of working on it so here you go.

The Cover that was Far More Humorous in Your Imagination:

Spoiler

thecover.thumb.jpg.be5ae282e1f63c4782a7a98381739147.jpg BLECH. I can't stand to look at this.

I kinda want to put some "inspiration" covers in here, but nah. Type "generic western romance novel cover" in Google Images if you want to see more.

Here's a text-free version if you still want to meme.

thecovertextfree.thumb.jpg.257906c29eb7d3f5c3eff5d6ca0df94c.jpg

Sorry to let you down. Sigh. At least we can move on now.

Anyway, the BONUS CONTENT was much more fun to draw, probably because I suck at painting. How does colour? Anyway, enough of my self-indulgent self-hatred.

thatbook.thumb.png.34837a4c9488a2d488dde630be54a9c4.png

Oops, that text is pretty small. You might need to open it in a new tab.

Look at all those characters I don't usually draw! I suppose we'll have to see more of them, eh? Wes was really entertaining, I don't know why I don't draw him more often.

willowsregret.thumb.jpg.113b080dfe786c1ce515fcdb785dcee3.jpg

In which Willow realises she should have swallowed her pride and asked Wickerbottom to teach her how to read.

Her discomfort brings Wilson great joy. He probably has about forty thousand NSFW puns he's been dropping just to see her squirm. Heh. And Wolfgang over there is totally unfazed. Probably witnessed stranger things in the circus.

I chortled almost continuously when doing the rough draft of this one. Beats the cover by a landslide, anyway.

I think that's everything for now. There is a part three of the BONUS CONTENT that I might do next week. It's not exaaaaactly related, but it's in a similar vein. Wait, actually, it fits in fairly well. Ah whatever, we'll figure that out when we get there.

I really liked reading the character reactions, even if I had a hard time understand them.

I did not know there were books that contained icky things like this for a long time. I still don't really know what kind of icky it is, just that it's... Falsely called 'Romantic?'
If it's what I think it is, I'm surprised to see Willow and Wigfrid interested. If it's the mushy stuff I see my sisters watch in anime, that stuff is ridiculous. Bleh.
"I was always a non-fiction reader myself" - Wickerbottom sounds like me here.

I feel bad for Willow here, if that book is full of what I think it is. I'm surprised Wolfgang has any interest, even if not disturbed.
HA! I see Lucy! I see her there!

The colors and background you did in this scene is really good! It's wonderful to see more of your interpretations of  the characters and to see them interacting.

And I definitely think you did an excellent job of drawing Wes. It seems a lot of people report him being a fun character to draw. I have to agree, he definitely can be.

WX-78's reaction is so relatable and so hilarious, I love that.

And not to mention Woodie's reaction. XD His utter horror. Does Lucy like the book, though?
Them must have brought the book forth from the depths of the underworld Earth just to torture Woodie, huh?

It's interesting how you drew Webber with a more human-shaped face and tufts of fur appearing as hair on his head, too.
It's also interesting to see you draw Wigfrid more.
Did you look at references of the in-game characters as you drew them, or just went by memory?

...Why is Wilson getting sanity from that book though-

Wes' reaction was based off of my middle aged aunt when she was talking about reading Fifty Shades of Grey. Very little was changed.

If you're not familiar with Fifty Shades, I'd recommend not looking it up. It's rather pornographic.

The thing with Webber is that you want him to look like a kid, you know. At least I do. So I basically drew a kid head and stuck some legs on it. WIgfrid was supposed to look beautiful in that actress sort of way. And yes, I did consult the game art a lot.

Stereotypical young men have what on their walls... They do? Personally I hope they don't. My brother doesn't.

I didn't think of Willow or Wigfrid as being very stereotypical. But then, none of them are. Or at least, Willow could possibly pass as more normal just crazy over fire, but Wigfrid seemed different. I suppose it depends on interpretation.

In so many other ways at least Wigfrid seems very different from other girls, even not as much the female cast for Don't Starve. It's hard to see her failing to be different here as well.

Too late. Fortunately what I read about it was very vague and I could identify was that the depicted relationship looked really weird. This is actually the first time I heard of it being pornographic, prior no one told or explained to me what was wrong.

I understand Wes's reaction now though, that's what I thought it seemed like. It seems fitting to him.

I very much agree, and I'd say it's one of the nice things about the game.
I don't think I noticed that strong difference from say, other videogames, until you mentioned it.
