What are all the places where you can find ice

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody,

I'm playing DST on a kind of amateur level with a couple of friends and we managed to get to the mid of our first summer for the first time. And then we noticed, that summer is so hot, that things can catch on fire just like that. We couldn't keep our base from burning down almost completely. We didn't have a Fling-O-matic and figured that that might be the thing we are missing in our base, since we couldn't think of any other way to gain control over the fire.

So the first question actually is: Is there another effective way to fight an outburst of fire in your base?

Secondly: We tried to build a Fling-o-matic, but it probably was already too late, since we didn't find any ice during this season. It's usually in the stone valleys right? What other ways are there to find/gain ice? Is there any way to gain ice during summer? Maybe you can find ice even during summer in the caves (haven't been to the caves yet)?

The fact that we couldn't find any ice during summer, rendering us unable to build the Fling-o-matic pretty much ruined our game.

You can also extinguish fires with an ice staff or water balloons. The best way to get ice in winter is running around at the shore so pengull nests spawn which have ice around them. You'll need an ice box to prevent it from melting. Also the flingomatic will extinguish camp fires in its range so turn it off at night.

You can't find any ice during summer, since there is no place in the world that is cold enough for ice to 'grow' during that season. There are some things you can do however to prevent, or at least deal with wildfires.

1. Live in the Caves, which is rather difficult for newer players, since there is a lot of darnkess and monsters that they might not know about. As @Weird Wanderer said, there are no wildfires when you are in the caves, and you don't overheat unless you really try to.

2. Stock up on ice in winter and store it in a fridge. Ice doesn't actually melt when it is in a fridge, so it's best to stock up on it whenever it is around. You can put out a fire with ice. This is not very effecient, however.

3. As @Michi01 said, water balloons are also efficient. They also said an ice staff, but I find that a bit of a waste of resources

4. A really unorthodox, but effective way is to put them out by hand, and eat something healing afterwards. Raw Blue Mushroom Caps are the easiest to get, but do cost you some sanity. This way is a more preventive way of doing things, though. Unless you have ice on hand, there might still be a wildfire without you even noticing it.

5. If you managed you defeat the Goose (I typed the mammal, but it's the bird, isn't it.), you can make a Luxury Fan. When used close to fire, it puts it out. Keep in mind that this might as well put out your campfire.

6. I doubt new players will get to this point, but if you somehow managed to get a Star Caller's Staff from the Ruins, you can put it in the new Moon Stone on a full moon, get the Moon Caller's Staff, and use that on areas that you don't want to burn. This, again, is quite a waste of the staff and once more a preventive thing.

All things considered, Flingo's or Water Balloons are the better options. Unless you can live in the Caves.

Ooh, ouch that sucks.  I've had runs like that in regular Don't Starve, where I start in spring and spend THE ENTIRE SEASON looking for both ice, and a gear--just _one_ gear!--so I can make a fridge so my ice doesn't go away as soon as I find it.  More than once I've just...not been able to build a fridge or fling in time, so I do the "bravely run away" thing and just...don't live there during the summer!  Yeah, I make a mini-base for use during the summer only,'cos things can't burn down at your main base if there's no-one there.

Because of COURSE that's the way reality works.  Duh!

In Together, by the way, ice is a little easier to come by, because it "grows back"--the puddle after you mine it never goes away, and a few days into fall, it'll start being an ice lump again.  In normal Don't Starve, that's it--once you mine a mini-glacier it's gone forever.

So, good news for you in seasons OTHER than summer...but in actual summer?  Definitely not.  Freaking _Mercury_, the closest planet to the sun, can have ice*, but not the Don't Starve summer!  : P Your best bet is the caves or a backup mini-base at some other decent surface location.

...Notorious

*It's in the bottoms of the deeper craters. The fact that Mercury has no tilt and is also tidally locked to the sun means that sunlight is never at the correct angle to reach the bottom of some craters, so the ice there (probably from a comet impact) never melts. SCIENCE!

Building a Prestihatitator and then prototyping an ice staff is the best course of action I think. The staff can be used to put out smoldering and/or burning objects from range, but it won't last forever. At this point, there's not really much else you can do.

It should be noted that fertilizers such as manure and rot can be used to put out smoldering objects manually, but you have to walk up right next to them before they start burning.

During Winter, mine glaciers, they give out the most ice in this part of the year. If you summon penguins(go too close to the edge of the land and the ocean), they will also have glaciers around their nest. On the map you can see whenever the glaciers re-grew too, if you want to maximize your ice gain.

In summer, for your personal temprature you actually just need a cold thermal stone and something to delay overheating. Have a thermal stone in a fridge(or ice chester) and one on you, and when the one on you stops being cold, switch between them.

To not have your base burnt down there's several ways: Ice Flingomatics(I usually use them alongside Lureplants, since Lureplants have a very high priority to smolder and when something smolders, other things won't for a while. Place them so the flingo can extinguish them if they catch on fire, and it should largely work) on your main base, making a small summer base(can use less flingos than in option 1 if your normal base is large) away from your normal base, since the game doesn't run what's far enough from you so it won't burn, or option 3: Live in the caves for the summer. Overheating isn't possible in the caves, and there's no smoldering there too.

*dankness i don't know. I'm bored. I feel like I've watched very single YouTube video, all the DST servers are empty/too much ping, TF2 is taking 10 years to load as usual, and I have nothing better to do. Except homework. Oh wait...

What is ice? Lol I never need it other then fillers for recipes.  I stay at one of my 3 underground cave bases, no overheating and no using up valuable resources needed to make summer stuff.
