EuedeAdodooedoe
I really need to find ways to make my points shorter... It seems not too many people like reading long texts and judge the thread merely by the title. @spiderdian really? I am not hitting the same subject every time. It's different subjects with a similar tone. Partly because I'm a pessimist, partly because I too often see the more of the bad than I see of the good until someone mentions it. Although for me it works out well, because whilst a lot of people might focus on a lot of the good, I can come in and bring in the subjects nobody has really thought about too much. There was a point I had in my head some time today in relation to how I see the game design lacking polish, but I can't remember what it was... If I do, I'll post it on this thread though. Judging from the answers in relation to the title question it seems like people quite often liked the style, feel and whatnot of the game and it became pretty fun to actually play the game. And I now remember that I heard somewhere that the design of the game as it stands has been done for the first 100 days of game play or so and not for the sake of living forever. And with the A New Reign being said to bring late-game stuff into the game, this might get some stuff for those living hudreds, thousands of days even... Idk, my brain isn't working well for some reason atm. Perhaps the kind of stuff I talked about (e.g. Making the player characters more vulnerable, making crafting recipes harder etc.) isn't what devs should aim for? Although it would greatly improve game design in terms of difficulty and depth. And in which case having a warning of "you will probably die many times in this game" or something could be useful at the beginning. Arlesienne
"Uncompromising" kind of covers "you won't be coddled by Charlie"... I believe it does at the very least. CaptainChaotica
Well, Spiderian, the actual TITLE of the read is "What Made You Interested Into Don't Starve?" so I took it literally. Maybe the original post _was_ whiny, but I chose to take the title literally and use it as an opportunity to see what drew everybody to it/talk about what drew me. (shrug) And yes, it is uncompromising. I myself still can't finish Adventure Mode or do very well with caves, but do I think I'm going to be that way forever? No, I keep improving with this game, learning as I go, and that's one of the things that makes it fun. ...Notorious Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/69508-what-made-you-interested-into-dont-starve/page/2/#findComment-803306 Share on other sites
imsomony
My partner has a long-time love of survival and crafting games. Me, not so much, I'm pretty picky about them so I don't seek them out and instead wait for referrals. One day back in 2013 he saw Don't Starve for sale on Steam, liked the trailers, and bought it. I watched him play for a few days and loved the artstyle, the desolation, the exploration, and the overall challenge of learning to be a better player and conquer the world. I bought it and it's one of my top 3 most played games ever since. With regards to the points about game design and mechanics, I disagree. We all play how we want to play, and unless we're Klei employees, none of us can really say that certain playstyles aren't in the spirit of the game. I agree with your thoughts about adding new content, but wanted to mention that much of that can be accomplished through world options and modding. Klei has always been open and encouraging of other programmers building on their vision and creating cool enhancements. When DST first came out, one of our very skilled forum members created his own puzzle challenge world, and Klei loved it. There's a whole new DS world of creatures and gameplay in "Up and Away", and there are challenge maps mods like "Lights Out Adventure Mode". CaptainChaotica
Oh hey, I read that just recently! Showed it to my mom, too, and she's not even a Don't Starve player or much of a gamer, and _she_ liked it. Very interesting stuff. Even if you're not into game design, the psychological aspects are very cool to read about. Also yes, world gen settings exist. I was gonna say that myself but forgot. : P Don't like certain things? Turn them off! Or down, or up, or whatever. I myself usually turn down killer bees because I HATE them, and sometimes also the giants, because I'm rarely ready for Deerclops the first time he shows up. There's no shame in it. The game is _designed_ to allow that. ...Notorious Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/69508-what-made-you-interested-into-dont-starve/page/2/#findComment-803361 Share on other sites
Joachim
The title is somewhat misleading IMO. Anyway, the game design isn't bad at all. Of course any game gets boring over time (especially if you play it every day), but despite that DS(T) has high replayability. Regarding the conclusion that the game can be improved: of course, any game can be improved. And I believe this is what the developers are currently doing by rolling out A New Reign. You may not agree with the choices they made, but they do try to improve the game. OP, I like some of your ideas (e.g., stamina, which is also something I thought of), but I think you are judging things too harshly. I feel that you are overly negative about the game, which makes no sense, as you are talking about this game almost every day. And no offense intended, but you talk as if everything should be exactly as you imagine it, or else it is just "rubbish". There seems to be little room for nuance. Donke60
Ok after reading every post here is my response first you have to think of the game from every single angle or the ones allowed in the game atlest so casual to hardcore. the reason that night is so trvial in don't starve together is that people have a huge window to jump into the game and it you be not fun if you spawned in and just died like that died especially if you don't know what your doing. If you an old player the small night cycle is stupid. Also the game becoming boring is mostly our faults. Joeshmocoolstuff said it best in one of his videos. most people play the game until they can sit comfortably stuff meatballs in their face. Which isn't playing the game. If your play the game the same old way like a farming simulator then its going to be a farming simulator if you want thrills back. Change it up add mods set worlds to random on lights out be someone you hate go to caves on day 5 and stay. Adoe I play wes 90% of the time and if they add more bars for me to balance I'd feel like I was baby sitting the survivor which is not fun for me need more info on what that is Watch Jim Sterling's the survivor episode. That's my personal take on your feelings and criticisms and i'm not saying the games perfect or I never get bored of it Like i hate the control commands. Ps. I read every post fully Adoe I want my thank you and my cookie and thank god for me! Donke60
Last thoughts I don't think don't starve is one of those games that your suppose to look at from a spectators view it should be a first hand experience like Journey, Abzul, and the Last of us. the internet should not be used. their were a lot of old games in the nes era that were about exploring even if they were bad games Milo's secret castle comes to mind. where to beat it quickly you needed a Nintendo power magazine or you would be stuck forever on the first level Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/69508-what-made-you-interested-into-dont-starve/page/2/#findComment-818270 Share on other sites
Tainted-Petals
Someone I knew on tumblr played and blogged about it a lot, I'd never heard of it but it was free one weekend on steam so I decided to give it a whirl. Died a lot, loved the challenge because it was like a creepier, deadlier minecraft for me. Promptly bought it and started delving into the lore and then bought DST for my spouse (and now we play it every day off together).
