What is THEM's end goal?

Recommended Posts

I'm curious why this is in Suggestions and Feedback, personally.  Seems much more like a general discussion topic and would probably get more attention.

Also, I'm hoping they might clue us in a little more on Their motives, as well as Charlie's, in TtA.

Their (not them's, what?) motives? They just want entertainment. I don't think there is any mystery to it; even the ending to Adventure Mode cleared it up pretty nicely.. They want eternal TV with no advertisements. Their own effed-up kind of show for them and no-one else. Sounds fun.

I'm only refering to the creatures as that due to what @Miss did in her comic. I haven't gotten a chance to play my copy due to my current laptop not able to play the game.

Thanks for the context.

Mods can. I moved it already, don't worry :)

Thanks too.

what if , THEM are the spirits of the people in the ruins deep below the caves? or maybe , THEM are created by the people in the ruins. then THEM got out of control and destroyed their civilization? i mean, what caused their civilization to die out anyway? plus , why are there lots and lots of nightmare lights there?

Mr. Skits is rumored to be the writer of Maxwell's Codex Umbra. I'd love to find out more about the creatures... Even if the revelation might hurt their threat level as a villain. Though who knows. Maybe it'll be really mind blowing in the metaphorical end.

Well we know the anicents harnessed their power got to comfortable then died i can of thought them as the god of the world but not really wanted anything like The Dum Blind God who has all this power but does very little with it as you can see and Chalie or Maxwell would be like Nyarlathotep carrying out whims when needed if intentonally or unintentionally. all this is from H.P Lovecraft

Heavily agreed. Getting big Nyarlathotep vibes from THEM.

ok i'm going to expand on this more so here I go get some thinking food

What if the roles are switched as in the person who sits on the nightmare thone and gains the nightmare power takes the dum blind god role and the Them acted more like servants. Now in H.P love craft stories the dum blind god was a physical represtation of the universe not caring or knowing what happens in its self. We can be fully aware since Maxwell is stuck in the world that he can doesn't know exactly the idea of what harm he can do in the real world. Now I don't think that the shadow creatures are all that dangerous as bear in mine they are very primal and servant creatures notice how i use the word servant.what if the shadow people are just servants. Maxwell needs more people done. He might not know how but all maxwell might know is that there are fresh people at his doorstep. He wants someone to take his place so what do the shadow people do make a door and make a trial so that if you win you are able to handle their power and sit on the throne. I say they are servants cause of one of the shadows names crawling horror which was also the nick name for Nyarlothotep the servant of the dum blind god. Then you might say then why do they attack you well notice that in the epilogue all they do is watch and only when your physically able to hurt them do they find it necessary to attack you and defend themselves. Then there is the issue why won't they let maxwell leave freely if all they do is serve. Well that could be the issue all they do is serve they need a vessel or king and queen to give orders and i'm sure if it was like that i'm sure i'd be pretty possessive of my lord if i only exist to serve him. The ancients made the shadow creatures. but things got out of hand and in the end there only beasts so to give their life purpose they recorded their knowledge gave it to a desperate  man and made them there king. so in the end of the game they will always have a leader and their end goal is only to serve. I  would also like to point out that in the triumphant skins notice how the characters stay relativly the same. sure they get a little darker and maybe sinister  but then again their magic isn't necessarily good magic.

Charlie would also still work in this scenario as here purpose could be to kill you still but light just hurts her

also I just thought of this you might say whats with the phonograph well what if its symbolism as the cycle you turn it off and free maxwell but it turns back on after you are taken by the nightmare throne signally the cycle starting over and over again.

I don't just think its symbolism but a living thing. That it acts as a warning to the victims of the island.

I'm curious what is the purpose of THEM's plan after they capture people who stumble into their world. Do they intend to grab others or the characters in the game are enough for their purposes?

THEY: for the evulz.

Weeellll...(cracks knuckles) I kind of have a theory about Them and a few other things, already. Here goes:

1.  THEY are the corrupted-by-too-much-exposure-to-nightmare-fuel descendants of the Ancients (a popular fan-theory that I happen to agree with.)

2.  THEY are also stronger/smarter versions of the shadow creatures.

3. The shadow/nightmare creatures are quite real (this is pretty much borne out by a LOT of things in-game); the fact that the ones in the ruins can take on physical enough form to harm you _regardless of your sanity_ pretty much proves this alone. The ones on the surface are weaker, and can only break into our reality through a sentient mind.  Once said mind is sufficiently weakened to allow them to take on solid form, they must _kill_ their host to break the tie to them--this is why they attack you when you go crazy enough.

4.  WHY are the ones in the ruins stronger?  Because they are closer to those rifts, sources of pure nightmare energy. And what is causing the nightmare fuel to _come_ through those rifts...?

5.  That is the mere accidental emanations--like, the body heat you lose all the time without even knowing--of a great, vast, uncaring, REALLY powerful being that dwells even further in the depths of this world! Call it Great C'thulhu, call it a dark version of the Lifestream from Final Fantasy VII, call it a purely malevolent version of the Demon X(A/N)th (that last is actually where I got the idea), the nightmare rifts are being fueled by...essentially a god of some kind. At the moment it can't be bothered to get up and do anything directly; let's hope things stay that way.

5a.  A side-bit of this part of my headcanon is that where evil flowers spawn on the surface, happens to be directly above where rifts are in the ruins.  There's no way you can actually map it to find out so you can't prove me wrong!  : P

6.  So, how does all this tie into THEM's plans?  Simple.  Their bretheren on the surface are weak and unable to act independently without sufficiently insane minds; therefore They cause Their King to kidnap humans from our dimension to _drive_ insane and keep Their surface cousins fed.  And They keep Their OWN king insane partly to feed Their own needs...and partly just for funsies.  Hence the phonograph.  The song it plays used to be just a song Maxwell liked; now that They've learned that constant repetition of something can help break a human mind, They keep it playing by magic _all the time_ and it's taken on a far more sinister connotation.

And that's my headcanon regarding Them and related topics.  (bows)

Who are "THEM"? I've seen all videos (I think) and played the game but I've never found mention of "THEM". In fact, as far as I know, no significant pieces of lore have been revealed in-game or otherwise since the launch of Reign of Giants. Am I missing something?

"Them" are the shadows eyes and shadow monsters

The wiki says that Maxwell says it when he's on the throne when the player approaches him. @Miss uses that name for the shadows a lot in her comic, so I follow suit.

Ah, thank you. Is it known whether Klei is now completely done with Don't Starve's lore and games or can we expect anything in the future?

Welp, with Charlie around, especially with the "New Reign" cinematic, they're not over. They're doing a update every thursday.

Oh I totally missed this! I guess I've been checking only for new stuff on DS alone but they're now releasing all their new stuff on DST?

Yoooooooooooooooooooop Check their posts/updates on the "Don't Starve Together" threads by developers. "A new Reign begins" thread is probably the first thread you should check. One of the Klei founders posted it.
