Celicni
I am well aware this has been asked a thousand times (seen many threads while googling). How to deal with hounds? All of those threads say to build a corridor open on 1 side and fill it with traps but here's the deal: How do I get traps to kill hounds, without the hounds teeth which I need to build the traps. Terrible luck with teeth drops so far. I've just been dragging them off to the beefalo herds so far but eventually I'm guessing the hounds will overwhelm them.tl;dr: A way to deal with hounds that isn't building a corridor with traps, and isn't dragging them off to the beefalo herd. greggbert
The first few hound attacks you will have to handle on your own. Here are some ideas: 1) When you hear them coming run toward a herd of beefalo. Keep evading them so they pass by the beefalo. Eventually they will attack the beefalo and be killed. Will work any time of year, any time of day. In ROG the deer will also work.2) use log armor and a spear and just kill them dead. (Works for packs of less than 4). Make sure your health is 2/3 full or better beforehand.3) Run toward pig village (if it's not night time) they will attack the hounds on sight.4) Run them past spider nests, the spiders will sometimes way lay them (but you might have to deal wiht them if you come back to that area later). ButterStuffed
Hounds will never overwhelm beefalo. I personally never have a particular way to deal with hounds. I just use what's near, most of the time beefalo is what I use, sometimes I use lureplants, pigs, Ents, merms, tentacles, pengulls and sometimes even giants. Why do the work when others can do it for you. Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/37996-hounds/#findComment-506533 Share on other sites
Strangerdanger101
I guess you can say.. YOU GOT HOUNDED!Hehe.. hehe... ok ok i'll shut up now, i'm no helpIt's been too long since i've played this game but you can try kiting them (though that usually only works with like one hound unless you are super good at it)And like what was said before: Hounds will never overwhelm Beefalo unless you have too little in your world for whatever reason Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/37996-hounds/#findComment-506541 Share on other sites
Barbarian
Frogs! I love frogs, but I never see anyone else recommending them. They attack a hound if it's in range, the hound retaliates, and all frogs join the fight. I get a lovely lot of frog legs after as well. And the frogs respawn really quickly. I have my current base near to a large group of frog ponds, and if the hounds come at night I run around with a torch till the frogs wake up. (I do also have a tooth trap area nearby, but the frogs are more fun). Oh and to get extra teeth you can bash bones in the desert with a hammer - some of them give teeth as well as bone shards. Sedivy
Yeah I used to fight packs like a newb, trying to get one by one but that takes way too long, hurts and night will eventually fall. Far better off settling near a pig village or beefalos and running there every time it happens. Beefalos actually spawn fairly quick so don't worry about killing a few. More meat and wool (and horn) for you. Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/37996-hounds/#findComment-506575 Share on other sites

They're one of the easiest mobs for me to beat. And I guess I'll keep dragging them to the beefalo heard if it's not that big a deal. Barbarian
Well admittedly they're not a long-term strategy as the packs of hounds get bigger, but I love the way they all pile on to help. It's a pretty big frog village I'm near so there's large numbers involved as well. I hate the way you have to work at getting the beefalo involved, running through and around till a hound attacks one. But I'd work on your tooth traps too - like I said, bash some skeletons and bones for extra teeth, and if you can destroy some hound mounds (also found in deserts) those give teeth too. They deal some damage (weak attack but great cooldown) they can't be stunnes, they help each other (with mean sometimes 10 of them) they can make yiu drop your armors... it's the most annoying mob in the game for me. Spyro1
I use abigail to deal with hounds if nothing else is available. Or I just run to my base and let my pig men or bunnymen. Deal with them. BUT if you plan on taking them to your base make sure your berry bushes and other flamable objects are behind a stone wall. What I tend to do is section off about 1/3 of my base for bee hives, flowers, berry bushes, twig and grass. Then divide it with a stone wall and keep my bunnymen hutches built away from my drying racks and crock pot (because they attack you if you have meat in your inventory) if hounds come at day my pigs will crush them and at night my bunnymen will put them down no problem. If you really have no other options use other mobs. Lead them to spider dens, beefelo's, tenticles, whatever you can find. Only time hounds really are a problem for me is in the rare case I can't kill them before dark because its difficult to build and keep a fire going while being attacked. XxTheGentleManScientistxX
Well it depends. How advanced are you? Try making your camp near a pig village. The pigs will attack the hounds on sight. Also try making a hound trap. It looks like this http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RaxsK4mdILw/UxqVOjUh20I/AAAAAAAAAfo/AW0UjgjNu-0/s1600/Toothsome_Trap.png . Hide in there when you think there is a hound attack. Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/37996-hounds/#findComment-506867 Share on other sites
StayUpThere
First option is to use the beefalo thats also what I do early game. You could also build a bunch of pig houses and rabbit houses near your base. Pigs for the day and Rabbits for the night time. Another option and my favorite is tooth traps. I usually start setting up a bunch of tooth traps around day 100. But sometimes I feel like I need more traps and dont use it till day 150 but it all depends how many hounds teeth you have. Beefalo work fine for the most part but I still think tooth traps are more efficient. When I make a tooth trap feild I use no walls!! Just make a big circular set of traps and stand in the middle or run in circles around the traps while dogs chase you. They will all die very fast no matter how many hounds come if you have enough traps. Here is my tooth trap setup so far, I am going to add more as I kill em:. the truthseeker
Also, you can use bees (or bee mines) that you have nearby in hives (or built via bee boxes.) If you haven't made bee mines, just run up and smack a hive/box when hounds are near, then run away from the killer bees. The hounds will attack them and the bees will focus on the hounds. It can take several seasons, but you eventually WILL get a lot of hounds' teeth. if you can't wait, try attacking wintertime blue hounds in the MacTusk villages. I promise with their respawn rate, you WILL get teeth this way, and therefore traps. Decelexevi
Tooth traps are THE WAY to go. Just make a round patch of them close to your base and stand in the middle whenever you hear the hounds 'a comin. If you're diligent you'll have enough of them set up by day 100 to kill giants ('cept Dragonfly) very easily. Decelexevi
this is a weak point of mine...gotta figure out how many are needed to easily kill giants...and not stand still when they are firing at me Check the wiki if I'm wrong, but I think it's 60 damage per trap hit and Bearger has 3000 health, so 50 hits will bring him down. As soon as hound waves hit full size the tooth income snowballs and gets pretty crazy. If you're using the old bell to gather wood... I earn enough in 20 grass patches to find myself swimming in traps. By day 500 it's always a sprawling mini-biome. Dragonfly is the only problem I can't solve with them. They don't burn and can't be destroyed any other way than working... so probably the best weapon in the game. Impossible to use more than you earn. (But I didn't cheat and look at his health.) I'll have to make another chest just for grass overflow until I make my tooth resources to ramp up the traps. It would take too much additional screen real estate ATM to transplant more grass to my fields.Stupid 40 per grass or 10 per rope character per inventory box limit *grumbles* Since I returned to gaming and DS only recently after a few months Hiatus, I'm still relatively new to RoG...and including the "newer" item tactics...I'll remember that "Old Bell" suggestion when I advance a few hundred more days for resources. Thanks for those tips! I was planning attacks with it and forgot the importance of it smashes everything in its area like Deerclops does....but more...Monty Python like As I learned, it does well with a large dense number of creatures or swarming things that can be dispatched normally, or to soften up bosses if over 1000 health, but still learning the "path" so the Monsters will actually get stomped and not missed (compared to the slower before mentioned creatures. I ALSO learned that to make the bell, what creature to kill to instantly summon Krampus...I hope those players who learned that then had ranged weapons equipped and were near their chests ) Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/37996-hounds/#findComment-508809 Share on other sites
TheScientist112
I deal with hounds like this:1.Run->2.Run faster.->3.End up mourning your wasted touch stone/your world.Problem solved!Or,if you want a real solution,it only works if you have a chester : Kite the hounds until they attack chester -> Nerd rage ->Ask them what do they want you to put on their headstones. That is usually what I do.
