One thing you wish you knew when you started...

If the current you could go back and tell the beginner you ONE thing (ok, you can put a few), what would it be?

I'm a new player looking for advice. Please try to avoid too many spoilers, as I enjoy figuring things out on my own. Advice like "I wish if have saved my pinecones instead of fueling the fire with them" or something (I currently only use pinecones for fuel, as I see no other use right now). You don't have to explain what they make later down the road though.

If you're chopping a lot of trees, keep some pinecones on you.  They may help if you piss someone off.

 

Also, small traps can catch quite a few things, even things that can hurt you.

There's a winter, and Walrus's come out of those wierd things on the ground, (so dont make your base on them) there is suck thing as a shovel (ad you can replant things near your base) and a crockpot (to make better food, so you don't starve) yeah that's about it, I had fun not knowing many thing when I started

Read a lot and follow the instruction is my key.
You can absorb many basic knowledge and useful tips on wiki or forum. Or deeper you can look at the source code.

i remember my first world I survived about 30 days since I've already known many things in the game from reading wiki.

The first couple of times the deerclops owned me, the first time I killed him I was killed by nightmare creatures right after because of his -400 sanity drain aura >.>
