Disappointed with the Giants' drops.

Recommended Posts

I don't know, I was expecting something different. The giants are cool enough, but the drops themselves just seem kinda lame. The DLC's title implies a focus on the giants, but they seem somewhat rare. Regardless of their rarity, the items they provide seem to conflict with the concept of the DLC, which is surviving harsh weather conditions; they create items designed to circumvent this with incredulous ease, and are rather boring. I was hoping for something bizarre and creative to come from them, but instead we get something with plain effects.

And on an aesthetic note, the Eyebrella is incredibly, uh, bad looking. An eye stuck on top of a plain umbrella. Hell, it's off-center and behind it as well. For something that's dropped by the oh-so-advertised giants, it's incredibly boring in function and appearance. I didn't want complete dryness, I wanted something interesting!

Sorry to be so critical, but I really don't enjoy these items that much.

EDIT: Because it has come up multiple times, I know that there are plans to make the giants drop an item that will help craft the item they currently drop; that is not the issue I'm discussing.

Agreed.

Honestly after killing the Dragonfly (HAVE RANGED WEAPONS), all you get is a reskin of the Thulite armor with fire immunity (just play as Willow at that point)

The Bearger drop is basically a Winter vest mixed with a Hunger Belt.

The Deerclops drop is just a more water proof umbrella that lasts longer... woo.

And the Goose/Moose drop is a giant feather that cools you down 50 degrees (Why not just wear an Ice hat? As long as you are wearing it, you will never overheat)

And really the only purpose the items serve is to make the next season easier (except summer, that's just all-around, like autumn is)

Start in Autumn (all-around) -> Hibearnation Vest (counter to cold) -> Winter (cold) -> Eyebrella (counter to rain) -> Sping (rain) -> Giant Feather (A meh counter to heat) -> Summer (heat and fire) -> Scalemail (good for all seasons, also counter to fire)

I was hoping that the Spring giant could like give you an blueprint/ item you can make to make it rain when used, or be able to take care of its baby which will defend you (until it becomes and adult, then it leaves you and returns in spring), The deerclops kindof already had one (Houndicus Shooticus, but i suppose they needed some reason for people to go to the caves), no idea for the Autumn giant, And maybe some fire based items for the summer giant (Fire places that give off more light? Maybe Lava in buckets that you can lay on the floor and will burn anything that walks across it, including you), just some unique epic items, not already existing items "Human centipieded together/ slightly better than the normal counter parts

I agree with you overall, the giants themselves? I love them, their drops... not so much.

I love you Klei, but I have to agree. These giants are the masters of terror and they need to drop something rewarding. I also agree about the umbrella, the eye on top is a little silly.

I hope that their drops will be able to be used for other things, like the Eye.

Please don't hate me :(

I see what you mean, I've only tested with the giants.

Each drop is a placeholder but soon Klei will add new ingredients to make the current boss drop.

Also a good thing to note: The boss drops will help you in the next season. Yes, even the scalemail.

So basically it will be the exact same as now, except you gotta DYI to make it?

Still nowhere near good or unique enough to make it worth it imo

Now this makes sense in theory, but what do you DO with the items when it's not that season? Other than th occasional rain where you could use the eyebrella (waste of durability), you are unlikely to overheat/freeze in any other season, really the scalemail is the only one that can be used in a season that isn't the next season (It being a good all-around item, kinda like how autumn is the All-around season).

I could see the point of them if the seasons got harder with time, I was even thinking to make a suggestion post but this would do:

-The first seasons should be a little more moderate, so players can survive and hunt without much trouble and the giants loot is not needed to survive

-After the fourth season things get a little more extreme, spring is rainier, summer is hotter, winter is colder and autumn is ... autumner.

-After the eight season things get even more extreme, to the point where the giants drops or the high-tier clothes (rain coat/hat, puffy vest/winter hat) are needed to explore freely the land. Autumn is still good because a "easy" season would be needed if the player couldn't kill the giants.

-After that difficulty escalates progressively like the hounds, until it reaches a point where the giants loot is basically necessary to survive.

Any thoughts?

Agreed with the general state. I can only hope that there will be more than one use to the items that the giants are eventually gonna drop, like there are two uses to the eyeball. I made a suggestion for a secondary use for the Dargonfly a while ago, which honestly seems a bit more creative than what we got so far (that sounded way more arrogant than it should). If anyone cares, here's the link:

I'd say that there should be at least two uses tied to every giant drop to mix it up. The items they drop right now are fine in concept (feather thing needs some tweaking though), but if thatS' all we get from the title-giving giants, that would be kinda lame.

Their crafting drops will need a lot more flexibility.   It would be nice if there was something significant you could build that needs all of the different giant drops.  It's not like there is going to be any more giant's (of the sub-mini boss variety) or any extra systems you can work with the giant's (brushing out the Bearger's back hair to befriend it).  It is a bit disappointing.  Make's me wonder why the giant's are worthy of being part of the title.  They could of called the dlc something like "Sinister Seasons" and that would of fit perfectly.  Their loot just highlights the importance of the seasons and not giant's.

For masters of terror they are a way to peaceful. And with kiting they are not very tough in combat either.

Only the dragonfly is a bit tricky.

But yeah, their drops are kinda weak. But if they would drop OP items it would be boring, too. Maybe the items should do something different than being another clothing/armor/cooling item.

Well...

Eyebrella: you can "sew" back together (just like the regular umbrella) Helps for Spring or whenever there's rain, it doesn't just rain in Spring.

Down Thermatidote: Cools you. The only thing bad about it is durability, you'd need to use it wisely. But you don't overheat in just Summer, I have overheated in winter or any other season, even in the Ruins when it glitched from winter to summer in a world I had.

Scalemail: Yep, fire protection version of thulecite that is still armor , all around.

Hibernation Vest: The only real "next season use" item besides being a slurper belt, it is a winter vest. A "two in one" deal.

...yeah, also agreed... although I will admit that the scalemail and vest looks pretty awesome :D

...but the eyebrella... not only would you never want to craft it over the houndius shootius (given that its functionality can be obtained with a few significantly less expensive items), but aesthetics/design wise, it does not fit nicely at all in the game... its a big thick umbrella with a giant eye on top...

...just... that eyebrella... *shudders*

or be able to take care of its baby which will defend you

Oh man, I would love that so much. Maybe they could socialize with Smallbirds.

No wait, better idea.

The baby that you raise will be able to upgrade your Smallish Tallbirds. Smallish Tallbirds will gain better combat capabilities, and Smallbirds will stay around with you longer when they become Smallish Tallbirds. The latter effect will make Winter the ideal season to stock up on Tallbird Eggs.

So right now it looks like the plan is to have them drop ingredients that will be used to craft these items. However, taking the deerclops as an example, we'd have the option of making the eyebrella or the houndius shootius. Perhaps we could improve the situation for the other giants by using the same idea: one use for the item in creating an equippable, and another for a base improvement.

I just made a suggestions thread full of ideas for what these base improvement (or other) craftables could be
