I wish I never read the wiki.

Recommended Posts

Ugh, I totally feel you. The wiki is the first thing I get into with any new game, and I really wish I hadn't for this one. The first time I went into the Ruins, I wound up wandering into the Labyrinth. Running into Ornate Chests and dealing with Dangling Depth Dwellers, despite dying, was so exciting the first them since I had no idea what they were! Then I got bummed out because that's the first time I felt that in this game.

I feel you completely. I have this mentality where the first thing I do when I discover a game I like is to read about it on its wiki. It usually ends in me spoiling the entire story and learning too much about the game mechanics. Luckily, I found out the story of this game on my own. I just wish I could say the same about the game mechanics.

Well, I'm an introvert that tends to think more than talk. Also, you guys normally don't have interesting enough conversations that I wanna chip in on. Last but not least, take your smug face outta my thread.

This is not a puzzle/adventure game. There's hardly anything to spoil. All this does is highlight the flaws with the game difficulty (or lack thereof). Once you have some basic knowledge, the game becomes total easymode.

One should not be required to know nothing about a game to be given a challenge.

I wish I hadn't read some things but am glad I read others.  There's certainly some aspects that should have been discovered through game play.  However, there's also plenty of things in Don't Starve that simply aren't logical enough to be deduced from the sparse clues given during the game.  Sometimes even direct observation can lead to the wrong conclusions.  I learned a lot of tips just reading this forum that would have never occured to me otherwise.

So I guess I'm saying I have mixed feeling about the wiki.  Some things in DS just can't be discovered on their own.  At least not without risking many hours worth of progress.

I read it all the time but it's like comparing text book theory to real world application; you won't get good at it unless you work at it. You don't learn these kinds of things just by reading about them.

EDIT: I misinterpreted; I remember seeing things on the Wiki before I saw them in game but seeing them in game was still a new experience as no amount of words could tell me exactly what I could expect. I mean it told me Deerclops are kind of jerks but I had one just stomp around my camp for three days and nights without destroying anything.

Fixed that for you :D

I think I already mentioned my feelings on the matter somewhere else, but they're pretty much like these here. The only little joy I have left is seeing others play and be as surprised over the game as I used to. Made my friend play it few days ago and she hasn't put it down since xP I remember being very careful reading the wiki towards the end though, anything I needed to learn about Spider silk for example I made sure not to even glance over at the other images in case they would spoil something really exciting.

Never for any game have I felt the usual "I wish I could forget everything and replay it like the first time" so intensely ever before.

Well you don't necessarily feel like you're missing out...eventually, through lots of trial and error and accidentally clicking new buttons, you would figure everything out. By researching stuff on the wiki, you speed up that initial process and can start developing tactics and play-styles that much quicker. If you're so frustrated with learning recipes and game mechanics the first few days, there's a slight chance that you'll overlook the vast opportunities and depth already available to you, but just masked by ignorance.

I both agree and disagree. While some things were spoiled, I would probably have given up on Adventure mode in irritation if I'd been ambushed off-guard by things like "Darkness" (if I hadn't known to bring gold and silk, I would have been done) or those thrice-damned obelisks in "King of Winter" (it's not obvious that they change states when you're <35 sanity). So, it CAN be helpful for some things.

But in retrospect, I do think that knowing what's coming ahead comes with a heavy price.

When you first connect to the wiki there should be a pop-up that says, "Warning! The content in this wiki will ruin the game for many. Don't Starve is a game that should NOT be researched before it is played. If you want to play the game the way it was meant to be played, please turn back now."...or something like that.

Doesn't that go without saying for every wiki ever?
