Honestly, I cannot remember a time before controversy in every single update. Every skill tree has had its controversy, and even the world updates seem like they're generally controversial for one reason or another, largely because of how controversial rifts are. What was the last update that everyone generally agreed was a big positive?

Wanna say that for all intents and purposes, practically every update ever is going to have a vocal minority of people who aren’t happy about it for one reason or another. This has been the case since Don’t Starve’s Beta, where people were unironically considering quitting the game when the Gobbler came out.

It also doesn’t help that perspectives will also change with time. I remember said minority constantly bashed pretty much every return of them update when they were coming out after the first one, and nowdays people look back at it pretty fondly in hindsight.

It mostly boils down to the general rule where if people are comfy with an update they usually don’t speak out on it since they are satisfied, where the people that are not are much more likely to discuss it in an unpleasing way. That’s not to say that you should never speak up about things that are off to you (the WX drones perishing after a limited amount of time comes to mind…), but it’s also just important to remember that there are tens of thousands of people playing it on the daily, and the 99% that are satisfied and don’t speak up draw way less attention than the 1% that do.

Every single update ever released will have its share of people who like it, and people who hate it. That’s just a given..

But as far as one of my most recentish? Favorite updates go it has to be Baltaro Crossover, an update NO ONE asked for, NO ONE expected would happen, but if you like to gamble & play poker/Blackjack being able to play “Cards” in DST and collect a full deck of cards you can do whatever you want with in the game has been fun.

Is it a “Traditional DS/DST update?” No… But was it charming cute & fun? Yes!

With that said…. I hope they stick strictly to game content updates when they release DSE, and avoid the skins & Crossovers, because…. don’t starve and it’s two dlc expansions were pure magic, and I’m hoping they can revive that magic with the development of DSE…

Now days I look at DST as the Silly Crossover-Spin off social party game compared to DS & it’s DLCs.

While fun events… they just aren’t DS.

To be fair most updates aren't "controversial" it's just a bunch of people giving feedback which makes it seem more controversial than it actually is. If you go anywhere besides the forums people will be more positive since the forums are supposed to let the players give feedback. People are more likely to pick out things they don't like than what they actually like

If you want to know whether or not an update is ”controversial”, the forums are definitely not the place to go. We are a vocal minority, and even if we find a lot of rift updates controversial most players don’t really even interact with it and those that do often won’t care. I don’t think most people get too upset over skill trees either, Willow is a great example since although she’s complained about extremely frequently here a large number of people outside the forum still regard her skill tree as one of the best.

At the end of the day, most “controversies” that happen even within the forum is a flurry of feedback rather than being outright negative. Pearl’s update in December wasn’t really controversial, though I’m pretty sure that’s a result of apathy over her character than anything else.

Wilson's refresh seemed pretty enjoyed since it, at least at the time, was assumed that was the last refresh and didn't expect the skill trees to affect every character. I miss those days.

Wilson's update is probably the most controversial update ever since it's the first skill tree. People were arguing about whether every character was going to get a skill tree or if it was just a Wilson thing, so many people were upset with its inclusion back then and in retrospect it has grown only more controversial. The people wary of it were proven right, and the people in support of it are now greedily clamoring for more and trying to pretend like Wilson "never got an update".

I remember that there were some people who were really upset when food spoilage was added to original DS and you couldn't just burn an entire beefalo herd to death and then not worry about food for ages.
