How would you feel about being able to rename items/mobs?

Recommended Posts

Figured I might as well ask a question like this to gauge interest.

Normally, I usually like games that add a system where you can rename items. In particular, I usually like doing it in the mid-lategame in minecraft with anvils. I don’t really do it for a practical use, but moreso do it since I find it fun to have items named after a theme I’m going for in a particular world.

I didn’t see this idea working too well initially in DST since you most of the times broke and replaced most items very quickly, but that has changed quite a bit in the past few years, from items that can repair themselves (either passively or with items), to the post rift gearsets outright being impossible to be destroyed entirely.

I would personally like to see some way to rename items someday, even if it’s morso of a novelty. The idea of being able to rename your items/weapons would add a bit of charm that I think would be nice. Of course, some way to distinguish an item that is renamed compared to not would likely be important as well.

I also feel it would be neat for mobs as well (with the above being kept in check), perhaps as a neat way to distinguish various “similar” mobs from each other.

Renaming weapons seems kinda pointless considering how little durability most of them have. Maybe with the planar weapons since theyre repairable (and eventually upgradable). I think if anything should get names it should be critters. Ideally critters get a full overhaul (actual perks, hunger is less annoying/outright removed), names would be a decent start to that.

Would love to have some sort of tag item that could either be applied to items or mobs giving them a unique colored name or in parentheses to distinguish it from the unchanged ones. Unique weapons/armor even for only their low % duration sounds awesome, you could even apply it to items/chests to have your name so no one would mess with it and be just that extra distinguishable.

It would be confusing to be honest..

Imagine if Wurt could name all the Merms in the game (because she’s Wurt) and she names them ALL Bob.

And what seems to be confusing here? I would name all pigs Jerry and start a Jerry x Bob war.

I’d love this addition so much

I like always set up some sort of animal pens in my worlds I’d love just messing around and naming things silly names

it’d be fun to name bosses in multiplayer servers and surprising everyone else, too.

Reminds me when I was renaming people's pub kitties during "Year Of The Catcoon" into variation of "Buttcracknutexplosion" and "Silentdiarrheagift" among other more "controversial" ones. Am sure such an implementation won't lead to... any *side effects* :pirate:

Oh god, that would be like my own random habit of calling all (docile) Treeguards "Steve". Just today, a Treeguard kept wandering into my base RIGHT up by the crockpots and other things I needed to use, and I was like "Go AWAY, Steve! Get out of my fridge, STEVE!" XD We could have multiple Bobs aggro on a Steve, and then sneak into the swamp to pick up the loot. It'd be amazing.

Also I've "named" a couple of boats myself in DST, but you have to give up a structure slot to do it--I put a sign down on it and then just made the sign's text be the boat name. Willow had the "Blaze of Glory":

And Wendy had the "Entropy".

(Yes, I named them both after forms of destruction. It fits the game's sense of humor, I think. :P)

Also, I think that since we can name Year of the Catcoon critters, we should DEFINITELY be able to name the regular pets that have been in the game forever. C'mon, now! Again, I've gotten around that by signs (one outside my base, saying something like "Welcome to Starvania, home of High Priestess Willow and Charmander the KittyKit!") but it'd be nice to be able to mouse over your vargling, ewelet, etc. and have the cursor change to "Pet (Pet's Actual Name)", like it does with the kitcoons.

...Notorious

Only if Fuelweaver gets a line ridiculing whoever tries to name it.

This is unironically a good idea. Talkers/bosses/characters like Fuelweaver who are both should be able to reject the player's attempt to rename them to Stinky Bob.

just so you know fun is legal

Honestly, I'd go even farther. Bonus points if the name shows up in death messages.

Go full 2000's Halo lobby.

Ionos was killed by spontaneous defenestration. They became a spooky ghost!
