Why is crafting system completely remover

Recommended Posts

Hello. I've seen lots of division in the forum's based on the new crafting system and I am curious. Why is the old crafting menu no longer an option for players who want it. It doesn't seem like much of a good idea to completely remove the old crafting menu when players are willing to quit over it.

Probably because if they do keep it, a large amount of people will use it, rendering the work they put into the new one useless, since the new crafting UI is really good. Its less clunky, its clean and just better, and Kleis definitely doing the right thing switching to this system

they would have to upkeep 2 different huds

also if someone was willing to quit over a bad hud then they werent staying for long anyways

so by that, it means that the new ui is bad, because many will use the old and better one, wich is obviously better, since its actualy faster in use, but we had this talk so many times allready, that there is just no point arguin to yes sayers

It's been suggested to those who do not enjoy the new HUD, and I am willing to quit DST over it :wilson_worried:

R

I  don't really want to either

I don't remember who said it and what they said exactly, but one of the developers roughly said that the new crafting system makes it way easier to introduce new items into the game without having to put an unnecessary amount of effort. As an example, they mentioned that the whole reason the Terra Firma Tamper exists is because it was more convenient to create a new crafting station as opposed to fitting all the turf recipes into the structures tab. Even if you don't like the new system, I think we can at least agree that the old one was getting pretty crammed up in some crafting tabs.

Also a small and obvious tip from me: playing the game helps with getting used to the new system.

From the beta launch post:

Quote

At this time we will not be supporting the old crafting menu as moving away from that approach allows us for more freedom when adding craftable items. For example, the Tackle Receptacle and Terra Firma Tamper were only added because we did not want to add a dozen recipes into the survival and structures tab. With the new approach, this is not an issue. The Tackle Receptacle and Terra Firma Tamper have been changed to research stations, like the Science Machine, where you will be able to prototype the recipes, learning them forever.

From reading the responses to the announcement beta post, we’ve noticed that a number of people are feeling scared of the new crafting menu. We understand that a large UI change like this can be scary and often approached with hesitation (we understand how frustrating it is when our development tools, and even our phones, change when a new update comes out) but we would like to encourage everyone to play with the new menu before providing constructive feedback.

No, I just said the new UI is better. Its just, from Klei's point of view they want everyone to switch to the new UI, so it makes sense that they dont have an option for it

wich kinda sounds unfair if you ask me, just imagine the floating heads in character select and scoreboard is still a thing you cant change away

It's more akin to RWYS removing old farms and HL&I changing fish behavior. The forced migration to the new hud is being made because the two interfaces have largely different philosophies and are somewhat incompatible. They'd need to enlarge the old UI to add permanent slots for fishing and turfs to begin with and someone would need to put extra effort everytime bew content is added to keep the old UI acceptably functional.

I'm sure the modders will be on it and deliver an old UI reversion mod for those who want to resist change anyway.

As others have already pointed out, the new UI is not limited to visual changes. The crafting system itself has changed and now uses different code to define recipes, tabs (well, filters now), etc. Maintaining the old UI along with the new one would be considerably more time-consuming than just flipping some magical switch. And given that most, if not all, the arguments in favor of the old UI appear to boil down to "they changed it, now it sucks", that just doesn't seem like a good use of their time.

I'm sure there will be visual mods made to make it look like the old UI, but honestly I'm very happy that we're recieving a new and improved one. If you're willing to quit a game over that, that's kind of on you.

i know

The new UI is great - a lot of people are just scared of change and the fears make them think its worse than it is.  This is a pretty common pattern when things change, but as someone who's used the new UI - I can't wait for it to arrive!!!!
