What's going to happen to DST after it's finished?

Recommended Posts

I'm a massive fan of Don't Starve, and I love these games to death. I know Don't Starve and Don't Starve Together are somewhat different beasts now, but there's something that's been worrying me ever since Klei had that deal with Tencent. (Please keep your opinions on that matter out of here, I know it's been discussed to death and it's not what I wanna see discussed in this topic.)

Don't Starve is a single player game, with expansions and modding support but generally speaking you can play the game without a care about it ever going away. No matter what, as long as you have the game and whatever content you want on it in some drive, you can play it. That's not the case for Don't Starve Together; It's a much more social game, heavily focused on playing Together and with lots of neat little rewards and bonuses for consistent players that don't actually change the actual video game part at all (with the exception of some unlockable characters, but even then you'd never have to pay an extra cent to get those). I'm happy about how DST works and getting to play dress up with the characters is a neat little bonus to toy around with your friends, but with how the game works and its dependence on Klei's servers I'm worried the Don't Starve Together experience won't be preserved like Don't Starve can be.

So, if Klei stops developing Don't Starve Together and hosting the servers... then what? Are we just gonna have to hope the oddly limited offline mode will suffice? The game can be played just fine without the actual servers, it's alright, it's okay. But knowing that stuff like the cosmetics and more importantly some playable characters could just be locked away forever some day bothers me a lot. I know this isn't something that will happen any time soon into the future, but I really hope that Klei considers opening up DST's offline and maybe even open up to fans hosting their own servers for the game in case Klei ever decides not to develop DST anymore. I'm hoping all of Don't Starve - not just the single player game - everything from Together can be preserved and played no matter what some day, even if it means the people who made this great game won't be maintaining it.

I want Don't Starve Together to stay alive as an openly moddable, easily playable game with limitless potential just like some of my favorite games, and I'm hoping the game's current way of functioning doesn't stay as a hurdle keeping the game back as mostly a memory once it's all over.

I have similar worries and it's one of the reasons I won't spend any actual money on any of the aesthetics or DLC since the DLC isn't like Don't Starve which you can use it whenever you want.

For a start players should be allowed to swap their worlds between offline and online mode then you can't get either locked out of your world if you aren't online OR can never play with other players on your world if offline. I hope to see this in a QoL update within this year and I have some faith it will come since other important QoL features such as 5+ world save slots, pausing, quick drop, dozens of HD textures, multiple players being able to open the same container, and most importantly 64-BIT all were added!

I hope within this year we will get QoL features such as...

  • Allow switching between server modes after a world's creation
  • Allow switching between game modes after a world's creation
  • Insanity volume being separated from ambient volume
  • Gesture Wheel-like feature for being able to preform emotes more efficiently than now
  • More world generation settings like archipelago
  • A lot more HD textures, especially for items with horrible quality like 64x64 butter and butterfly wings
  • Hover info for when hovering over a setting in the settings area then new players can know what they do
  • Mod presets/collections (like how it works in tModLoader, if you've played that before) which the player can basically select mods and add them to this preset/collection then you can just enable the preset/collection to enable all those mods at once
  • World seeds which the player can basically have an area when creating a world to input a seed then it always generates that specific world like how Minecraft and Terraria do it

Fear not, it's the same as most games with similar business models.

1. support will never end

2. updates will dwindle into nothingness but klei will never say DST has "ended"

3. significant issues or bugs will remain so forever and then you will realize klei spent alot of dev time into trivial, cosmetical features that could otherwise have gone into fixing more impactful matters

4. the playerbase/servers will never die unless there's a significant sequel released

There's always a chance for DST 2 on a new map. This map is getting kind of old tbh. Maybe it's time for a change and they can implement more features like playing on islands and stuff.

Hopefully a map we haven't seen yet. Maybe once charlie eats the moon (or w/e she's trying to do) she can reshape the world to her liking.

Maybe like world changing events in forknight and we can have Ariana Grande give us a concert. Maybe just my uncle Joe can sing to us if they don't have the budget.

If they want to make a DST 2 then they should just go ahead and add real DLC packs like how Hamlet and SW were for Don't Starve to DST because making an entire new game would be kinda dumb when this one's already popular and everything's already good, just the world's stale and boring and needs spicing up which DLC packs can do.

Though if they do that I hope to God they do the DLC like DS did and don't make it you must be online to use it :wilson_facepalm:

The problem is the limitations... If they can figure out a way to add more shards... Maybe exchange the underground shard for another and have that one momentarily stored, idk, I don't program.

The story is tied to the world too, idk I wouldn't be apposed to a new game and map. The devs would get more money too.

Well I'm sure they plan to at least support this game for another year given it JUST released on the switch. They apparently have big plans for when the refreshes are done. (I think)

A new game wouldn't suddenly make DST unpopular either.

I'm not sure but the fact that you can host private servers is probably a good sign. Offline mode allows for couch co-op if you are on console but it does not match online play.

And we all want DST to stay alive as long as possible. With any luck it will be around for a while longer.

Also the Wurt Webber and Wendy bar joke was very good. Mind if I steal it?

Klei doesn't have permission to stop developing for DST, everyone on the forum has to agree to it. So, no.

I can't wait to teach my grandchildren to play.

Forgetting Hamlet already?

I don’t think releasing a DS 2 would be a good idea considering DST hasn’t even released on Nintendo consoles yet (coming in a few months) also it took Klei an entire year to rework Wes, Webber, Wolfgang.

Theres still 4 characters yet to be reworked Wickerbottom, WX78, Wilson, & Maxwell.

More if we can include SW/Ham DLC Characters: Walani, Wilbur, Woodlegs, Wheeler, Wilba & Wagstaff.

Even more then that if they plan to Rework existing DLC characters- Wurt, Wortox, Wormwood, Wanda

Warlys rework counted not as a DLC character, but as a Rework.. so there’s a very high possibility we will see other DLC characters ported into DST in the same manor.

In fact: just doing that alone would probably extend content updates by another year.

With the game not even released on Nintendo platforms yet: I don’t see any reason why Klei wouldn’t want to pump out more content to keep those new comers actively engaged.

DST could end up becoming like Minecraft or GTA Online, games that don’t really have sequels.. they just continue to grow with a steady stream of updates.

But there’s this “NewHome” that really bothers me, I hate it’s art style I hate everything I’ve seen about it.. and yet there’s a possibility Klei’s plans are to have NewHome replace DST..

I hope I never live to see that day.

You replied to me saying that they probably won't develop a new game yet because it just released on switched, to point out the same thing to me?

I just said that.

Hasn’t released yet. ;) couple more months, but yeah I guess? :wilson_love:

Don't starve twogether twooooo

Don't starve 2^2gether

a sequel of sequel of sorts

Everyone keeps saying that you'd still be able to host servers and stuff if Klei servers went down but that isn't exactly true--you can't host a public server without connecting to the Klei servers in order to get your server to be listed in the server finder for people to join. If Klei servers suddenly crashed, you'd only be able to play with the people on your LAN, and the server would have to be Offline.

Offline servers cannot have item and character skins because the game contacts Klei servers to verify that you actually own a skin before it lets you use them--something only available when you are playing online.

This is mostly done to prevent people from stealing skins, however, so when Klei decides they're completely done with DST (something that probably won't happen for years after the final DST update) they will also recognize that they're not going to be able to profit off of it as much anymore, and they would make skins available offline...or just give them to everyone for free :D

Even after the final DST update I don't think Klei will shut down all of its DST services because they can still make a ton of money off of the game, so I really wouldn't worry about any of this happening within the next few years.

Doesn't legacy minecraft (aka the minecraft on xbox 360 and ps3) multiplayer gamemodes such as spleef glide or hunger games, still function because the entire thing is peer to peer?

So, if DST were to lose server support, could we technically still play if klei allowed peer to peer online?

Spoiler

or maybe i'm saying false information or something idk

Considering DST is the main money cow for Klei I doubt they would abandon it anytime soon.

On another note, I do trust Klei when they say they love what they do and geniuenely care for their projects. When the day comes on which DST ends, the updates will cease, and Klei will turn their attention fully to other games, as long as the company itself exists, we can trust them to keep the game playable- either by hosting all the services required for playing, and fixing compatibility problems that may arise, or making it somehow accessible without the need for their services. And even if Klei gets broken up, they will probably give the rights or whatever is needed to some other company that can keep the game alive.

Worst case scenario, there will be a big fan project to bring the game back to life. If Toontown got one, then a legend like DST can certainly count on it.

Yeah I don't like the look of Newhome. With any luck it will stay as a non-canon spinoff and won't overtake regular Don't Starve.

I'm pretty sure Klei said that they want to keep the company alive as long as possible, and since DS/T is one of the biggest klei games ( If not the biggest ), then I'm pretty sure we have a lot of time before we have to worry about it.

Edit: Oops accidentally quoted 2 times lolol
