Urgent fix needed! Game disables windows start menu on first launch.

Recommended Posts

To enable windows start menu and all the functions that comes with it like win+shift+s for snipping and screenshots again either shutdown and restart your computer

or if that doesn't help do it manually by:

ctrl+alt+del, task manager, details, right click "windows explorer" process, restart process

.

This is probably also the reason why several antivirus programs quarantines the .exe file and refuses to run it

Hey, this is a pretty serious problem, but it doesn't happen for anyone on the dev team. Can you think of anything else that might help explain it?

Does it break the functionality immediately on launch? 100% of the time or only some times? Fullscreen or windowed?

Were you on the testing branch, and if so, did this problem just begin with yesterday's update to the release branch?

Could you post a log file after the breakage, and we'll see if there's anything suspicious there?

Thanks!

I always play fullscreen mode. I can't say if it happened immidiately on launch as I only noticed because I wanted to make a screenshot of another problem to bug report it that I saw when loading into my regular test save , and both the PrtScrn button and win+shift+s didn't work. In fact no windows shortcuts except ctrl+alt+del worked at all. Not even just pressing the win key to go to desktop. So I ctrl+alt+del to get to desktop so I could write note in notepad but found out the windows start menu didn't work (which is why the shortcuts wouldn't work either. Now I happened to know that you could just turn the windows start menu back on by using the procedure I posted above but I wanted to see if just restarting would fix the issue, and sure enough it did. And it hasn't returned.

I sat the testing branches out this time around, nor do I own the DLC, so it's on the release branch.

I made a bug report of both issues I've found separately, unfortunately I was a bit strung for time and couldn't remember how to make a log file so I uploaded a dummy file instead which isn't very helpful. Apologies for that.

Incidentally, have you at Klei considered making it possible for us customers to play the game we originally paid for, ie. the launch version (with bug fixes) instead of this mergedown mess that I really don't like. If not, I fear I'll not add much to my 3400 hours of playing the game so far. Or at least make it possible for modders to make a legacy mode mod that removes everything you've added to the game with the mergedown.

im sorry but i have to say one thing, lol,

maybe you need roll back to years? as originally you not had allot stuff in beginning

You're not sorry, if you were, you would say nothing.

You wanted to make it known that you're of a different opinion that I am, and you think I shouldn't be allowed to ask a legitimate question of the devs, and you chose to express that in a passive aggressive manor.

i think there is roll back possibly at Steam if you not want play or not happy with latest release, i not sure how its possible todo with Epic games

4 minutes ago, gabberworld said:

one user even posted at forum how todo that

You cannot roll back to a previous release version because there is only one release version you can download, the latest one. You can only roll back from a testing branch to the latest release version.

If you read between the lines that is exactly what I ask for Klei to make possible, ie. to make it possible to roll back the game to July 14th version on steam. Or if it possible to make such changes to effectively do the same by modding.

But.. if everything was removed wouldn't that also include the updates to the modding system? :-?

i'm customer as well with buyed game, not only you, im happy that they upgrade the game. if they not would not make changes i would not even played this game anymore as im getting pored very fast with same stuff

but yes, i to agree that there should be possibly easier download the older version.

My request isn't taking anything away from you. You can go on playing as normal. I simply would like Klei to make the latest version of the game I payed for before mergedown with a DLC and it's content and changes I'm not interested in.

I'm not sure why you even bother to comment. It doesn't affect you. However, while you're here, that how-to rollback to an older version on steam only works if the game developer, ie. Klei, allows the version to be downloadabe at all which Klei currently doesn't allow. So it doesn't work.

alright... but what about the title of the topic? how to make this error happen again so klei can know how to fix it?

focus people, focus!

That was part of the issue. You couldn't click your start button, and you couldn't use any win+ function, including win+R

If you didn't open the game a second or third time, the log would be intact though.

I already wrote above that I restarted the computer to fix the start menu not working issue, so yes, I closed the game (well, actually that wasn't possible either, in reality I had to power cycle the PC).

yes

you can open the cmd right?
through cmd you have the option to run, if you tell to run the folder where the game is you go straight to it, besides you can run dxdiag there

then you will open the cmd, you will click on its first option the "file" up there, there will appear two options: "run new task" and "exit" click on execute command: "dxdiag.exe" it will run dxdiag, over the oni files folder, you leave it in your copy and paste and paste in "run new task" and it should open the respective folder

even if you don't open the folder for some reason, dxdiag will have already run, and the game log will be in the game folder with the log since the game has already been opened

If the game opened, the log should exist. Only in a client crash before the game opens there is no log file (I think...). But if you launched the game again, the log file gets overwritten. There are two player logs after DLC so everything gets overwritten the third time actually (or.. it could also be non existent so... sorry if I bothered you :hopelessness:)

No. I couldn't. I already described exactly what I did and why above.

And it was a one time issue, it hasn't reoccured, so there's really not much point in coming with suggestions.

Yes, it would be truly gone by now. I opened the game to make the screenshot of the bug I wanted to report in the first place and closed the game immediately after as I had to go out for a meeting. I launched the game again (the 3rd time) when I got home.

kkk my fault, i communicated wrong i meant task manager, not cmd

My start menu in Windows10 stops working every time I update video driver. My guess is that your video driver crashed. Don't know how to check it, but you can try look in Windows system journal.
press Win+R type: eventvwr.msc and press Enter. Look for events that happend when start menu stopped working.

Klei does allow it. I just downloaded that version myself to check. Note that I didn't use the steam depot downloader, since it's really annoying. I just used DepotDownloader.
