Bring back Rhymes with Play livestreams

Recommended Posts

Its been an interesting start to the new year, where we are still in the midst of a pandemic, and the recent Tencent news has fractured the community. I see this as an important time to bring back the Rhymes with Play developer live streams which imo have sorely been missed.

Adjust to the current situation

I understand we are still in the midst of a pandemic and I don't think the Klei developers are even at their office. However, as a lot of other developers who do these types of livestreams, I'd love for Klei to make the adjustments to doing these from home. That means using zoom to have the developers connect to us remotely and safely. Yes the quality might vary depending on the developers webcams but I'd gladly trade some pixel action for being able to see and interact with them again. Old livestreams were weekly, but it would be understandable to only have them once or twice (one for DST and one for ONI) a month for now until things start getting back to normal.

Bring them back better than before

The stream should be after update notes have been posted but before the update goes live. Old streams mostly came after the update was live, which was still cool to hear the devs insight but most peoples attention is already on the live update where they can play it themselves. This time window, I think gives the streams more focus as well as weight to the community in terms of interest.

Have a developer screenshare some of the new in-game mechanics for the update. This can be a work in progress. Have them explain the intentions of the update. We always hear what the update does but I'd like to hear why

Have an artist show concept art of the new art they did, as well as highlighting new skins thst will be available in the updste and their inspiration behind them, again these can be unfinished or maybe its only the the portrait art and not the in-game model.

Take advantage of Klei rewards points. Drop a link in the chat that expire shortly after. Show us you still value these types of player systems that don't solely exist to drive a profit.

I don't know if the team has the resources to do one or two of these a month but, I think it would go a long way towards healing the community, and letting us see the devs again to remind us of the people behind the games we love.

This. But not only that, imo Klei should try to have more interactions with the community, live streams were good and missed but more can be achieved, so far it seems that their integrity with players have decreased lately. I know studios that simply just play to their games with the players and that's just so cool... or whatever they can think of, as long the two parts are having a good time.

I'm a bit tired of rewards from there and there, just some more social integrity would do better than spoiling us with what we already have. :apathy:

I agree. Ive always felt Klei did a pretty good job with answerong the players questions in old streams. The rewards points suggestion just seemed like a no brainer to me, like they have this system which would work quite well as a stream reward, and I think alot of people are worried about how systems like these, in addition to spools, daily and weekly drops might be affected going forward so it'd be a nice bit of reassurance.

Plus more viewer engagement in terms of views wouldn't help let Klei know the streams are worthwhile .

If we could we would. The way we have always handled the streams was always voluntary. We decided what we would do based on who wanted to do it and what they could be showing.

NOW, we are also dependent on quality of their home internet and computer setup. Now that some time has passed and everybody is used to seeing people on the news with crappy webcams and horrible internet connections maybe it's not so bad. But not everybody wants to stream from their own homes. So promising that we can pull together somebody willing to run a stream every week is a bit of a stretch.

We could have them go into the office solo, but again. As a voluntary thing, I don't know how many people would be interested.

I will poke around again and see if this is something we can pull off and get back to you all.

I'd just like maybe five minute concept art showcases, art tutorials, and minor game update trailers to be honest.

It's why I haven't pushed for livestreams, I'm not even comfortable showing my own face during a private videocall, so I can see where Joe is coming from.:wilson_dorky: It was better when two people where in the room as friends but with how policies are, we're going to have to wait.

Thanks for the response! Despite how important I think these streams would be, I don't want there to be pressure for people to do them if they are not comfortable.

The previous streams were weekly and about an hour long. I wouldnt mind once a month and for 30 mins max. Trim the fat so to speak, but still get people excited for the new update and give a chance to interact with the community

@JoeW: Maybe one could stream from the office and another one could join with voice-chat (watching the stream). It doesn't need to be every week, just when there is a bigger update (like the "Year of the Beefalo").

Yes, great idea! As much as I loved the old streams I wouldn't mind seeing 1 stream instead of 4 that is more focused, ideally teasing the new update before it drops, and shorter if need be.

Make it bi weekly then! <3

Dont do weekly, that’s insane... once a month is fine or once every game update, any of you ever played Injustice 2? Remember the Developer streams for that? They didn’t do them every single week.. just every other few weeks.

You guys at Klei put too much pressure on yourselves to please your community and while I admire you for it: Weekly streams in the middle of a Covid outbreak is pushing limits.

Im sure most your community would be fine with once a month, and not even an hour long, 15 minutes is plenty! As long as you can cram all the talking & art showing off into those 15 minute streams.

Jan is looking into it. We have a decent list of people interested. We're looking at what kind of tech setup, internet connections we need to arrange.

We'll make figuring this out a priority. I think the team needs this as much as you all do.

I'll let you know when we have more info.

Yay! This is great news. Can't wait to see what you guys come up with!
