How should an upgrade to the storage compactor work?

Recommended Posts

  • Doesn't cost any power, no matter what it does
  • Prevents offgassing
  • Deletes germs as if in chlorine
  • Prevents temperature exchange
  • Smart storage option but with min and max, like smart battery, not just full
  • Can be built in air, not just on the floor
  • Stores a lot. "A lot" depends on its size.

Most people concern the capacity, but i just want to have a ICON or colour to show the material(type) of the content.

My prefered implementation would be a single resource container with a higher capacity (and space efficiency) able to show the icon of the stored resource. (I wouldn´t mind it being a huge 4x4 buildind, if it was more space efficient than compactors.)

=> This would encourage players with an ingame objective to reduce the amount of temperature calculation.

[I asume we all know the fps benefits of single resource compactors or conveyor chute piles in a vacuum.]

Honestly? Just two types:

Compression Compactor: Can only store one Element but infinite of it (And "combines" it regarding germs and thermaly to reduce lag (Maybe with slight energy cost? i would suggest 25W permanent intake. While offline you can not add or remove thing)

Reaction Compactor: Same storage then normal but with input / output for liquids to cool the contend. Can intake Chlorine gas to kill germs in compactor. (200g / 1 million germs)

And for storage purpose: an "directional" heavy sweeper. only scans in an 180° cone "below" it (standard rotation) but with 50% more reach. Can "lift" 25 Tons per sweep but cost 1000w while working and needs to be build with steel. Only reacts to hauls >1 Ton and scans slower (1/10 of the time) then the regular sweeper.

Maybe also an cooled sweeper for high temperate storage Environments? Well i'm drifting off.

Well a sealed compactor build from plastic and ceramic would be nice to and an "mountable" compactor that can be build on ceilings and walls. Size 1x1 storage cap: 1/4

Let that be a property of the material used in construction. If a player wants an insulating box let them use ceramics or insulation. If a player wants high heat transfer use some conductive material instead.

In factorio, the storage chest system tries to stack a single item type into storage whenever possible. This is a nice way of keeping storage organized and can help ONI colonies as well. The general logic is:

- Look for a storage with matching material. If so, use it.

- If there's no matching storage, find an empty box.

- If there's no empty box, use a nearby box.

ONI could benefit from a similar system, with some tweaks of course. Topping off the last 20kg of a storage isn't nearly as important as moving 1600kg of material, for example.

This would make the whole idea of altering exchange with contents pointless because the only material that would work here to noticeable degree would be insulation. It would also mean having to allow multiple totally different construction materials, something that only tempshift plate does.

Either radiant or insulating, not both.

Ceramic isn't bad, even without modifiers. However, any storage setup can be made perfectly insulated by removing contact surfaces (open doors) in a vacuum. Regular debris can't achieve perfect midgame insulation like a floating storage box. Not sure why you would NEED such a setup though.

Any weakness of the storage compactor isn't that it moves too much heat, but rather that it frequently moves too little. Setups using ice or cold stone etc. rarely work with storage because the storage container is already well insulated. The other issue is that storage ends up turning into a gigantic soup of dozens of materials scattered to the seven winds. A change of storage AI can help.

Nothing in this thread is about unachievable things. You can prevent offgassing by storing under water or high pressure, remove germs by storing in chlorine, store more by using dropoff or just more compactors, approximate amount by using multiple smart compactors with automated doors etc.

The idea is to have a no-nonsense building that you just plop and "it just works" and just stores. A building that radiates nothing does this job better than one that radiates heat of the rock stored in it or leaks water if you accidentally sweep snow. Ideal storage building contains exactly what was put in it.

Since cooling/heating stuff is an one-off thing, it would still be done better by conveyor and possibly dropoff, no matter how "radiant" the storage building would be. Put hot metal or ice on one end, receive cool metal or water on the other. That is not a part of "storage job".

All I want is a Search box so I don't have to remember whether Steel is a Refined Metal, Industrial Ingredient, or Manufactured Material, or scroll through 20 seed types to find the one I want, or select a certain type of food for hatches or something.

In case you were unaware when located on a mesh or airflow tile in a vacuum, debris are perfectly insulated.

I've seen a lot of talk on people wanting an upgrade or better storage compactor. If one is added, how should it be done?

- ability to set temperature range of material to avoid adding too hot/ too cold stuff where it does not belong

- ability to set non-germy only, germy only options for the materials

- other than that, 20t limit is fine (I would be ok up to 100t) as it adds some nice difficulty/complexity

- and for an extra point if dupe would look for the compactor nearest to the item and not the dupe that would make me happy.
