New Biomes and Map Size

Recommended Posts

With today's announcement that we'll be getting not one, not two, but three new biomes when the game launches, I'm wondering how all of this is going to fit into our relative small maps[1].  Things are already feeling cramped, with the width of the asteroid in particular feeling constraining.  I'm hoping recent optimizations mean Klei can expand the size of our asteroid, offering smaller maps for those who prefer them and those whose computers can't handle larger maps.

[1]  I'm working on the assumption that these new biomes will be contained within the asteroid, but it's possible that they'll be extraplanetary, accessible via rocket as part of a late-game win condition.

I`m thinking the biomes might be handled similar to how Don`t Starve handles them. The usual biomes would remain close in larger numbers and more exotic ones, like desert in DS would spawn further and only one or two. Maybe there will be a biome below the space one creating another layer or a different one near the bottom, rivaling with the oil biome for better space usage.

There's been quite a few optimisation updates in the QOL patches so far and I doubt we've seen the last of them, it maybe that by the time the final release hits a bit larger map won't be the performance hit that it currently is.

I don't think we'll see asteroid colonies at launch (I'd love to be proven wrong) that's the sort of thing I'd expect from DLC down the line.  Another possibility is that all biomes aren't guaranteed in each world.  So maybe out of the 3 new ones that are coming each individual world only gets one similar to how our geysers are a bit RNG.  That would add some more flavour to each playthrough and as long as there's alternative ways to get any resources unique to them (either via artificial production or rockets) it wouldn't remove options completely.

I think all of the biomes, with the exception of the starter biome, should be randomized.

I also would like the location of the starter biome to be placed with some variations.

Can you imagine a map with the starter biome down near the magma layer and no frozen biomes on the map?  Brutal.

I'd like more randomness too in the map generation. It should be a bit game breaking, to push us to use extreme methods or setup we were a bit lazy to explore until then. Maybe have an additional setting linked to the difficulty when starting a colony. I know people don't want to spend hundred of cycle just to realize their colony won't have geyser X or Y, and I never got to the rockets so I probably miss some knowledge there, but what I like about Dwarf Fortress when starting a colony is that you have to roughly choose where you're gonna set camp, and you can predict the enemies you'll encounter, the difficulty you'll be facing if you avoir having a river on your map for exaple, and each difference in the setting has an impact on your fortress.

Maybe ONI could let you predict what ressources will be sparse in your asteroid, to avoid this feeling of having to let go of a colony missing some ressources and judged impossible to develop further some players have.

And if it's not added in the game, I could definitely see a mod do exactly that ^^

Bear in mind that the game has to be accessible to new players, so map generation that forces "extreme methods" for survival should definitely be something players opt into, as you said.

HI,

When the game first came out we did have bigger maps, they took ( take) a long time to explore. I have been using a MOD  allows me to have the larger map.

Original map size ( I think) was 512 x 640 , it was changed it at some point to be 256 x 384.

I have been using the 512 x 640 for years.I tried Generating a map at 768 x 1152 but that failed so i reverted back ...lol

Oh totally ! Klei did such a wonderful job, this is one of the few "wiki heavy" video game you can play for a really long time without ever opening a wiki. But for now, I find the asteroid rather similar looking. Now that they found the right balance, let's break it !

I would like to see a more habitable surface biom

maybe meteors don’t start until cycle 100

or your in a partially destroyed ship not much more than a roof to protect from meteors and a little bit of oxygen and water

the surface of the asteroid could be covered in dirt

You normally reach the surface before cycle 100?
I barely have crops and a single eletrolyzer at that point if lucky.

It made me think if speedrunning is a thing in ONI community.

I'd love to follow people playing cold war trying to reach space 1 cycle faster.
