Started a new game... are meteors still going to destroy the map?

Recommended Posts

First time starting a new game since the quality of life update went live. Usually you'd have to finish the bunker wall across the top of the map before cycle 300 if you want to keep the upper biomes alive. Do you still have to do this?

Would be great news if they've fixed it so I don't have to worry about it anymore. I prefer buiilding my bases in the beginning and leaving the space biome for later.

This was my current game, on release just before QoL update, don't think there was much change in the meteor bombardment. I finished the ceiling wall off at cycle 473, had no lost biomes, and only 5 relatively small abyssalite breaches. So, you're probably about right, somewhere between 300 and 400 cycles to prevent any damage.

Incorrect - from the QoL patch notes:

Regolith Meteors once again drop enough Regolith to blanket the surface in a protective layer and prevent destruction of the surface. The deeper the layer, the less Regolith meteors will deposit, up to about 8 tiles.

The QoL update changed meteor bombardment. You no longer have to worry about protecting the surface.

Thank god for that. I would probably have ragequit and waited for the next patch in 7 weeks if it hadn't been changed.

You don't have to fear about the surface, here's mine at cycle 300 with a game started with the QoL Release.

Thanks Klei by the way, for this great fix.

The density of regolith that meteors dropped was reduced. The volume was increased to compensate and stop total devastation.

It will coat the top with a red hot regolith layer, but shouldn't punch into the biomes below now.

They heavily over corrected the meteors. They do way less damage and let off much less heat.

My current map had very little surface damage with just one breach on what I can only assume was a very high biome and the surface was not a uniform several hundred c

There is also far less regolith being generated for better or worse.

I recently breached the surface on my game started on the QoL branch while testing.  Just before cycle 400 and I had zero biome penetration.

It seems like they greatly increased regolith though, so I don't understand the comments about it being reduced.  I have about 4x as much regolith this game versus my last prior to QoL and breached the surface at roughly the same time.

I don't think I said it was reduced overall.

In one of the dev updates I remember them saying that the amount per tile of regolith was reduced, but it will drop more tiles of it so it doesn't punch through the top biomes.

It still ends up being an overall net increase...but would have been super-crazy bananas had they just left the density alone.

Either me or someone else would need to confirm this, but I'm fairly certain it used to be upwards of 1,500kg per tile, and now it's 1,000kg per tile or less.

How do you handle the material (rego/mafic), you get from this "great fix"?
Voles and other critters are bugged.

Is simple. you can't in the previous version before increase the quantity of regolith dropped from dust comet  my 5 shove vole eat in 300 cycle all the 630 tones of regolith in my asteroid, after upgrade i have a  constant 20 - 40 tones more regolith after each storm.. so i terminate the solar energy program and close the project. Now the sollar panels are useless if you want to play bugles. If not the bug whit regolith disappearance whit horizontal doors is the way to play it.
