Webber = Masked Pig?

Recommended Posts

I've been pondering this for a while, if Webber without his Pig Mask is a hostile monster, and guards attack him does that mean it's like the player is always wearing the Swashy Hat?

So if you play as Webber you can come during dusk and steal berries and such and return next morning with the Shamlet Mask, does the pig guard not attack him or does they still recognize him?

Because that sounds like it's be useful if it was a feature.

Has anyone tested this?

I think they recognize him, so if you don't wear your mask, they'll remember you, but I'm not 100% sure.
another thing I find weird, is that pigs call him "unpig", even though he wears a pig mask.

He smells different than a pig.  (Still, if he smells like spider they'd know he was a spider...)

But does the Swashy Hat act like the Shamlet mask?

I don't think so...sort of.

The Swashy hat allows people to steal without having pig guards constantly going after their character, instead they'd only associate it with some masked bandit.

So...I guess they're kinda the same thing?

You guys got me curious, so I checked the scripts and did a few quick experiments.

My findings are thus:

Mechanically, the component that lets guards know they're supposed to attack something is the instance tag "monster." Webber has this tag inherently, and putting on the Shamlet Mask simply removes the tag. A neat detail: this means that ANYTHING that normally attacks Webber on sight then treats him like any other character (pogs, for example, which I enjoyed immensely).

The Bandit's Hat works in an opposite manner. It simply adds the tag "monster" to anyone who puts it on (except Webber, he gets a unique tag, "originaly_monster", and yes, it is misspelled that way), and removes the tag when the hat is removed (pogs will attack you for wearing the hat).

Now, I don't understand how they react to danger through the code, but a few tests confirmed that pigs will forget crimes you've committed while they are panicking/attacking you for being a "monster." This has a few quirks though.

1. You have to wait until the pig is actually provoked. If the guard sees you stealing before he starts chasing you, he will recognize you later, mask or no mask.

2. No pig forgets being hit. If you manage to hit the pig (not if you miss), they will remember you, mask or no mask.

Now, the Bandit's Hat also grants the "sneaky" tag, which simply means the distance at which creatures agro to you is much smaller (yes, specifically agro, so it applies to things that attack you, like pig guards, but not the peagawk, which still runs from you at a normal distance). This also applies to the radius in which pigs notice your crimes.

In summary, yes, Webber is essentially a masked pig (or any character wearing the Bandit Hat), just without the sneakiness. Pigs will, in fact, forget his crimes once the Shamlet Mask goes back on. I have run up with no mask, antagonized the guards, robbed them blind, put the mask back on, and after a few moments of chase, the guards calmed down and treated me like I'd done nothing wrong. It does not have to be dusk, and you don't even have to leave their sight. They're... really not the brightest bulbs.

I had fun with this! I hope my findings are useful!

I tip my hat to you kind sir and applaud your research.

So this essentially means you're able to steal items as Webber, as long as the Guards don't catch you stealing before the chase you for being a monster.

Seeing as the Swashy Hat will decrease aggro range and also permit the player to hit guards(I assume?) it'd still be advantageous to use the Swashy Hat compared to just being Webber, but this might be information that will do in a pinch. Like you're starving as Webber but don't have the Swashy Hat yet.

No, from what I can tell, a pig guard will always be able to know a player that him them, no matter what character you play or how you're disguised.
