Demanding 4 trees!

Well the game is set underground in an asteroid. Would have to be some weird alien trees that grow in caves lol.

there's a terrestrial planet though, would be cool if we can bring back tree seeds that requires you to build an actual greenhouse that expose to the sun to grow it.

that would be epic. Especially if it was a very large building and the trees were 6 tiles tall (to set them apart from the plants already in game). You could have it as a centerpiece inside your colony.

It could give a big decor bonus. Like the +200 decor from crystal shine bugs.  It would also be a good CO2 sink. right now it's only slicksters. It would be nice to have some more complicated farming challenges with alot of criteria to make it work. Ranching overshadows the plants lol

I'd replace my aquarium design with a giant tree in the middle lol.

and there, they can consume co2 and produce oxygen

Spoiler

but it would also be good if they upgraded in this sense that the slime and alga could multiply in the light, since both are live plants

This is actually something I feel is missing from the game right now: some way to grow algae.
I mean, sure, there's pufts, but they're so inefficient it's silly. Why not something harvestable that needs to be planted underwater? (also needing strong light and fertilizer)

Actually I have posted the idea ’bout algae grower monthes ago (in “Suggestions and Feedback” forum.)

BTW water blocks about 10000lux light per full-tile.

Yeah, I figured it wouldn't exactly be a new idea.
As for the water absorbing light, Klei might have to adjust that a bit, if only to make growing the stuff more interesting. I do feel that either the sun or evolved shine bugs should be needed to supply the plants with enough light in order to make it a later-game build, otherwise it may disrupt the learningcurve/progression of the game if players are never pushed into switching to electrolyzers.

not to mention that the fertilizer is completely useless

I would love to have a resource called "wood".

=> Consider the high specific heat capacity wood provides ;)

(And really like the idea of a plant with some "advanced" needs. Maybe give a tree 3 (arbitrary number) grow states, like sapling, small tree and matured tree or so. Not sure how the opinion of most player would be about it, but I would really enjoy to have a plant with changing needs.)

yes, not to mention the complication that would be, it would be just like having a plantation (I mean the food of the game)
First we would enter the biome, the biome trees grow slowly
2nd we could cut them or catch the seeds that are there and do our cultivation
3rd after a few cycles the trees would be ready to be cut
4th, the trees would have to be replanted

would be the cultivation of game farms with something like what happens in real-life eucalyptus plantations

only these four steps would already have taken considerable time, and if I add what I said before on oxygen and co2 and the need for light, it would be hard work "and irrigation maybe"

and they could have 2 different effects just imagine the same tree would produce something in the light, without light it would produce something else, it would be the first thing that has a duality in the game

which depending on the benefits would make us have 2 forests one in the light and one in the dark, or in the cold, or in the heat ...

I just had a cool tree idea. Bamboo tree. Of course an undrground version. The tree is slim so would fit a normal farm tile. It would grow pretty high, like 5 tiles high so it needs a special room. It being hollow inside would make sense when building pipes out of it. Relatively fast grow rate. The tree is made out of segments, when harvested it would visually fall apart into a pile of wood.

Trees is all I want ! If we have trees, then the dupes scan sleep on bamboo beds ( which always makes me think of Rambo ) and we are one step closer to have wheelchairs with wood wheels, for the elderly and aging dupes.

Therefore: +1 and thumb image.thumb.png.029fb637019764572be3a75621d783f7.png

Fertilizer doesn't just necessarily mean the manufactured stuff used to apply Farmers Touch. It's also the stuff put into the plant tiles, like dirt for mealwood or phosphorite for peppernuts.
But now that you mention it, having them consume fertilizer as a basic need would fit rather well.

OT: I do like the idea of trees as well, but I wonder what depth they would add to the game? Maybe could grow fruit to make pie? :3 I mean, wood is nice and all, but feels a bit pointless unless there's some tangible benefit to make stuff out of it.
Decor is fine too, but art items already provide tons and require zero upkeep.

Basically.... what could the trees provide that would justify their implementation and workload to maintain them in the game?

Wood could be an early to midgame insulator with different requirements than ceramic. It is hard to get large amounts of ceramic early so trees might be an alternative.
