Best way to recycle polluted water?

Recommended Posts

I think Sieve is the best option. It can be automated easily.

If you use Algae Terraria like me you're purifying so much water you may run out of sand but hopefully you'll get regolith soon at that point. If you need to bridge some time you can have a duplicant with high operate skill crush some rocks into sand.

Another option would be a distiller setup. By dumping the water on magma or heating it with a Tepidizer and Aquatuner. I find this is a lot more hassle and thoughput is lower.

Do your dupes do anything else beside composting? :D

Use the Polluted Water as a coolant, whether that be in the Refinery or passive absorption around the base, before sending it to a Water Sieve.  When the Sieve processes the Polluted Water into clean Water, it will always be 40 C no matter what temperature it started at.

Easiest to setup: pump -> water sieve (but heats up/cools down the water to 40°C, so there might be side-effects like heating up your base)

Using of exhaust heat of other processes: boil pw to steam -> cool down steam

Using critters: Gulp Fish will convert polluted water into water

Personally, I like to use polluted water to cool down metal volcanoes or hot materials with automation. The goal being to cool down the metal/material for safe carrying to the warehouse, while also getting some dirt and steam to cool into clean water.

I could be wrong with efficiency ratios, but it seems to get the most out of your polluted water.  If turbines were recently updated to be more viable, then that's a fourth layer of use for such a resource. (Cooling, Dirt, Water, and some Power.)

I don`t like doing that. The dirt often changes right into sand and forms a tile that usually breaks my designs. Recently the heat capacity of polluted water was reduced to match clean water so i`d rather use clean water so steam flows uninterrupted.

But polluted water tanks are a great place to dump some hot glass or other hot stuff that might end in my base like some dirt spawned from slime by meteor hits.

It depends... In early game i just sieve it.
In late game i use it as "sacrifice coolant" for aquaturner - turning polluted water into steam vented to space - massive heat deletion), before space industry i use it to cool oil, natgas generated by boiling oil and other things...

Never thought of it that way. Usually I'm stuck in early mode before the game crashes on my laptop so I haven't gotten that far. I'll keep these ideas in mind when I get later in the game. Keeping a balance of both clean and polluted. I should probably make two rooms or dumps for polluted water just to recycle polluted water as coolant.

Here's what I did in my current base.  I set this up pretty early and it's worked great and completely hands-off.  It does require a fairly small amount of refined metal and automation.  Initially I just tapped into a large pool of water at the bottom of a swamp biome I had dug out.  I vacuumed out the chamber during a dormant period.  Pwater goes into the loop and continues in the loop until it's just under the condensation point of the steam.  Once the pwater is hot enough, it goes into the sieve and I just add it to the geyser water to get sent to my hot water storage.  If you want, you could also route the sieve water elsewhere for cooler water, but I do it this way so I can limit the piping needed.  All this requires is a pwater source and a water storage for the output.

That looks interesting. So I should get some scientists on early for moving of those geysers?

Scientists only allow you to analyze the geyser to find activity details, which while nice, aren't needed to benefit from the geyser output.  I usually try to cap geysers as soon as possible, to start storing their output for later when I need it.  A buried geyser isn't any use until you start collecting it's output, so might as well do it as soon as you can.

one of the other ways to use polluted water is using the metal refinery and loop it until it gets too hot to handle and funnel the hot PW to the sieve to output it to a much cooler water.

I wouldn't use PW for metal refinary, it can't handle steel

That's not true, all of my steel production has used PW for coolant.  It just has to start out very cold.  I'm using PW from a slush geyser.  Though, you can only run it through once.

I'll rephrase that and say it can't handle it very well.  I find it easier to loop petroleum through an aqua tuner.  If you get the automation right you can produce endless steel without having to worry about heat

Wait, is this new?

Before space upgrade,  I was using PW for steel with no problem.  It looped a few times, and I output the heat into 2 sieves.

Was that before, or after the Heat Capacity nerf to Polluted Water?  It now has the same Heat Capacity as clean Water, instead of higher.

After space upgrade steel refinement now adds 117 degrees heat to coolant so if you loop PW more than once it will boil and break the pipes

ah ha.  I restarted a new see during the preview.  so didn't get far enough yet to use the metal refinery to test that.

good to know. dang!

I'm thinking of trying to collect polluted water in future playthrough when I expand the base, if there's strategies to make polluted into clean, that would help me out.

My old water treatment system: (best to heat up polluted water before so you can delete some heat, i don't know if klei change the output temp of generator)

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1348172717

or you can preheat it with metal reffinery or other way before to change it to steam (to have steam or pure water) or make it disapear in space to delete heat)
