Bluckles
I noticed the dupe Jean has an "X" for gender. Other dupes have M or F as expected, what is "X"?? For clarification I added the -Eric to make his name sound more french. Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/92397-gender-x/ Share on other sites

While fundamentally true (or at least should have been in a perfect world) - this statement is a bit underwhelming... Each culture has some expectations and requirements comprising the gender construct. A male is expected to prove he a "true man" same as a female is expected to prove she is a "true woman" and a failure to get this social approval (or a mismatch, or choosing not to "play" this game at all) is socially frowned upon. I also think, those roots go even deeper, and the "frowning" may, at times, also have an additional personal nature, as the majority of population do tend to try and prove their gender and many have some "inadequate" aspect which they try to change or hide to fit the social convention better. avilmask
It's actually funny, when you for some rare occasion look at charters info, and see something strange. CaptainChaotica
Personally, I think it's awesome that Klei included non-binary characters in ONI. They do exist in real-life, after all. And while "REAL MAN!" and "REAL WOMAN!" (and REAL small furry creature from Alpha Centauri) may be the old-fashioned ideals...this is a modern-day game, and there are no longer only two options. Actually there's been more than two gender options for a long time, especially in some other cultures (fa'afine, anyone? two-spirit?), but that's a topic for another day... (Heck even biological sex isn't completely binary. Intersex is a thing, and nowadays it's not always being "corrected" at birth--some people go ahead and grow up with non-standard genitalia, and while rare, they do exist. This doesn't mean full-out hermaphrodites, though--the idea of "person who can make a baby with themself" is mostly fantasy. It's usually more like only part of one set, or parts of both express themselves but only at puberty, etc. Whether DUPES have genitals, however, is a question for...fanfic? to answer. : P) At any rate, that's probably why they gave Jean an androgynous name. Pronounce it "Zhahn" and it's a boy's name, "Jeen" and it's a girl. ...Notorious Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/92397-gender-x/#findComment-1054511 Share on other sites

Actually it's the end point of evolution, as noted in certain lizard species. Eventually any given DNA based lifeform will result in a asexual, mono-gendered species. CaptainChaotica
Well, I meant more like in humans...but funny you mention lizards: First thing that came to mind was "Enemy Mine", where the hermaphroditic lizardy alien suddenly announces that they're pregnant. : P I'm not sure if the author of that story knew that about some real-life lizards when he wrote that, or not, without looking it up... ...Notorious Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/92397-gender-x/#findComment-1054573 Share on other sites

But...dupes are clones...and the printing pod creates them. Also, I'd like to point out that I'm fairly sure that Dupes have no defining genitalia. So each and every Dupe can be whatever the Hell (Michigan) they want to be! Spoiler They shower with their clothes on, and I take that as their clothes ARE their skin. They don't produce solid waste...so I take that the Dupes just have...holes. Or maybe they excrete waste from large pores. I dunno, I haven't checked under the hood to find out, and I don't want to find out...because that's creepy and a violation of these Dupes' privacy dammit! Bluckles
Here's what confuses me then. If by Klei and this forum post's opinion says that gender is societal and sex is scientific, then why would a game centered around science focus on labelling a dupe's gender and not sex? It seems like arbitrary information. Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/92397-gender-x/#findComment-1054651 Share on other sites

In fact, this whole new age argument about gender seems to be about semantics and redefining gender to mean personality... That's not what that even means... Personality refers to individual differences in characteristic patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving. Gender refers to the state of being male or female (typically used with reference to social and cultural differences rather than biological ones). Spoiler It's an identity, and your personality doesn't really make your identity. I think what we're referring to as "gender", we mean "gender identity"; a person's perception of having a particular gender, which may or may not correspond with their birth sex. 2 minutes ago, Oozinator said: Are you sure?
