Don't Starve Togheter isn't free?

Recommended Posts

I must say, I feel confused and disapointed Don't Starve Togheter isn't a free DLC to core game like should be.
You make me to pay double time foor the same game with multiplayer option. Erm... Is a little not fair, i guess.
I bought Don't Starve on sale a few days ago, but I just simply miss there is something else, a completly different game, stand alone product like Don't Starve Togheter.

Can anyone explain to me, why you doing this like that? Why I had to double pay for be able to play with others?

welcome to the forums.
there both different games story wise and gameplay wise, and they updated the coding from single player to optimize together.

Different engine and content? Dosn't look like...

Well technically it's not THAT different in content but DST is amazing even for the price, they bring out different content now with like the forge and stuff which is AMAZING to play with friends. But with the engine part I have no idea about that stuff :)

Oh, so it's just a simply money grab. Too bad I didn't know about it before.

One thing to note is that Don't Starve Together contains the Reign of Giants expansion for free, whereas its a paid expansion in Don't Starve. Don't Starve Together also contains the A New Reign expansion for free whereas it is not available for Don't Starve. DST also receives free events such as The Forge. Even though DST may be a separate purchase from Don't Starve you get a lot more continual content. Also DST has skin drops which you can sell on the community market if virtual cosmetics aren't your thing. (Which you can spend on something else like other steam games.)

If you own the Reign of Giants/Shipwrecked DLC for Don't Starve you get some free virtual items in Don't Starve Together. Unfortunately you can't sell them if virtual items aren't your thing.

I wouldn't call it money grab, but sorry to hear you're not liking it :(

Just because I don't like, when someone force me to pay again for same stuff, because is it the same. Dosn't matter DST is constantly updated etc. Too bad a core version don't have multiplayer option. Maybe I try TDS on another sale. But still is a unfair move from Klei Entertainment.

Refund the game if you can and get DST.

It isn't an unfair move, DS owners received DST for free, though I can't blame you for them keeping it around like that.

I understand I hope you can try it soon! Great community especially with mods

Steam allow you to refund games if you don't play them more than 2 hours. After that there bot automaticaly deny you request.

So maybe o next sale. if this game will be still alive.

I can't imagine this game without mods. A lot of them are mandatory, completly "must have".

It'll be pretty alive, but honestly they should compensate people who do this unknowing, AND put in the description to check Don't Starve Together out... in caps and at the top.

Honestly, Don't Starve should have a mutliplayr option. I don't mind if DST is payable, as long, as core version have separate multiplayers option. Should have, but those days are really hard for players. Many of developers following Lootboxfront, or Shadow of Lootboxes paath. Sad but true.

They already stated why, the original plan was that there were so many changes in the code so they released it as a separate title, kept it in early access and gave it for free to all Don't Starve owners previously. Which is why it's payable, it's supossed to be a "replacement".

Although as I already said previously, I don't understand why they haven't made a clarification where it can be seen, in fact they could hide the store page for Don't Starve and give it to Don't Starve Together owners like some games have their own separate beta title (Not the beta version, I'm talking about separate library games)

From a newcomer  perspective I guess it could look like that yes ; buying the "same" game 2 times. Kinda weird heh?

But DS came out long ago. It had updates and dlc of it owns. Only after DS very reasonable lifespan Klei started working on DST.

Believe me, with the amount of new stuff they added, you would not expect it to be free. Its a new game man. Call it DS2 if you want.

Remember EA with the NHL serie?? Way worst

Do keep in mind that most stuff for DST had to be completely redone to fit a multiplayer aspect; including the entire engine. That's not something that can just be switched between in one game with the flip of a switch.

A huge example of these different ways of setup would be the Caves content: In DS, you'd have 3 cave entrances, each cave a different server from the last, with another Ruins server beneath that. When you enter one of these shards, you unload the world you were previously in and load up the shard of the world you're currently entering. In a multiplayer aspect, the concept of unloading and reloading servers simply was not an option considering that you're no longer one player unloading and reloading servers at will when going to different shards (Caves, SW, Surface, Ruins). You're now in a multiplayer aspect, where people could be in every server at once (Imagine the hell you'd suffer hosting 7 servers at once: one for each cave, ruin, and the surface layer; 9 servers if you include SW). So to simplify it and allow computers not built by the government to run DST servers, the caves and ruins became combined into one huge shard, with each cave entrance on the surface leading to a different part of said shard.

That's only one example though. (Not to mention the Klei devs were kind enough to include RoG as a part of the base game in DST)

DST has tons to do without mods, a majority of players I know hate mods. You did say you just got the game on sale, try and play it vanilla, and try to play deep into the game. Of course, DST is much, much more fun with friends and a group, I would recommend joining a steam/discord group, it makes the experience so much better.

Imagine the logic of buying Don't Starve, then finding out if you want Reign of Giants you have to pay extra when if you just bought Don't Starve Together you would get Reign of Giants free for the same exact retail price.

Imagine the logic of buying Don't Starve, then learning that if you want multiplayer and free updates you have to buy the exact same game a second time when the first game you bought is the same thing just without the content the other game has. And what bonus content the first game you bought does have, you have to pay extra for.

Them having to overhaul the coding and making a second copy of the game doesn't justify them charging people individually in full for each separate copy. It's unscrupulous, they are actually making you pay for what you already paid for a second time over because one version has content the other version does not yet they make you pay the full price of the game again if you want that second version.

Yeah, I also don’t want the devs to bring food for the table.

Silly greedy Klei, making me pay for years of hard work and complete reworks of the old game.

Sounds like an incredible amount of bias towards the developers.

Capcom pulled the exact same stunt with Dragon's Dogma, it's not even a new trick.

A lot of people, especially new players, have this "cut and paste" mentality that simply isn't true.

If you attempted to cut content directly from DS and paste it into DST literal demons would leap out of your monitor.

It's also forgetting the numerous massive content updates DST has received for free, like the Forge, A New Reign (1 & 2), as well as the Holiday events. Let's also not forget that there's yet another major free thing in planning for it as well, so there's a future.

DS has Shipwrecked and Hamlet justifying its existence too.

The simple fact is that despite how similar they may look and play there's actually more than enough reason to justify them being separate games and hence the separate pricetags.

Cause Don't Starve was supposed to be the beginner's game, barring any RoG content. RoG was meant for players who have experience with the base game. If the DLC was just handed to players on initial purchase, they'd be compelled to play it without trying the base game, find the content challenging, and possibly find the whole thing unfair cause they lacked initial experience with the base game. DST's RoG inclusion was for the purpose that people would have and easier time adjusting to the challenges together, and possibly retain some background knowledge from the first game. (That's my take on it at least)

Don't Starve still has its own content and charm in my opinion, such as the character unlocking system, adventure mode, cave separation, world-hopping mechanics, Old Bell, among other things. (Not to mention lore-wise some stuff just won't work being back-ported but let's be honest in this thread who cares)

And just cause I don't feel like going through the trouble of explaining this one, have this gif.

This is reply for Korlie cause mobile is hard and quoting is hard :D

Don’t starve’s coding was to weak for multiplayer, the devs had to rework it for a very long time. It isn’t as simple as “game let there be 2 people at the same time”

Can’t the same be said for l4d and l4d2? Or any game with a sequel? It’s the same game just more content

lastly the game is cheap as hell, have you seen some games recently? $60+  That’s crazy! Don’t forget that don’t starve together is only $15! And what’s this? It comes with a free copy of the game to gift out to a friend?!?! You can get don’t starve and it’s dlcs + don’t starve together for less than $40

im not sure if you know about this but klei gave owners of don’t starve a free copy of dst when it was in early access, so players who had don’t starve (before June 2016 iirc) got a free game.

To be honest, I never really have been bothered by the idea of having to buy both games individually. It could have been that I managed to snag them both on sale for pretty snazzy prices, but two versions of practically the same game means twice the expected save files for me to mess around with, and that's good with me!

I mean, both games are still distinct enough to be worth having them both in your library. At least DS runs consistently silky smooth when playing alone, unlike in DST. That, and some characters can be allowed to function better without having to be shackled by DST's multiplayer balancing, which conveniently didn't touch any of the "top tier" characters...
