Grossman dupe is a male or female?

Recommended Posts

I think Klei may have included a few non-binary dupes, or at least left their gender deliberately obscure so that the fans could decide for themselves. Which is cool of them. Devon is probably the strongest example, given that their description uses "they" as a third person pronoun.

I thought they used "they" cause they're talking about the duplicants in plural. "Meeps are like this, Burts are like that"

Edit: Nevermind, I looked at Devon and it seems like they're deliberately ambiguous on him/her

Edit 2:  Found another example; Turner is also first called "This Turner" and is then called "they" instead of him/her

The thing is that "Dupe" is short for "Duplicant".  You have to keep in mind the setting of the game.  These are some sort of survival simulation being conducted by other beings.  That's why most of the Dupe descriptions are pluralized with "they".  It's not just a single Dupe that is being referred to, but a potentially limitless number of copies of that Dupe base print.  This is reinforced by the Turner example.  The description is calling out that specific Turner, out of all the Turners in all the parallel simulations being conducted.

I would also throw out the thought that, as manufactured Dupes, they may not have a gender at all.  They are likely androgynous.

Yeah, they call out a specific Turner, and then call him "they" instead of "him": "This Turner is paralyzed by the knowledge that others have memories of them they can't control"

But with for example Harold (and most of the other examples of "this dupe") it's "This Harold is cripplingly self-conscious of his long middle toes"

Since dupes are printed rather than born, I would assume any gender identity they carry is a throwback to the human DNA stock that the Dupe-printer was (presumably, since the dupes are very humanoid) based on.

So, the dupe can be whatever gender it (or you) wants. :D

Just don't pronounce 'Ari' as 'Harry' with a missing 'H' (I learned about ONI from a Biffa playthrough video and while I enjoy Biffa's work, that drives me nuts! :p)

(Having said all that, as Mangrove mentioned above, the eyelashes are the tell if that sort of thing really matters to you - as a baby I apparently had adorable eyes that were "wasted on a boy", so YMMV, of course!)

Definitely female.

Maybe they are both boys, both girls, both intersexual, or whatever, because they could be hetero-, homo-, bi- or pansexual. I don't care about the sex of my dupes, I see them as personalities. So everybody can see them as what he/she wants.

Dupes don't have any visible secondary sexual characteristics (except male pattern baldness that makes Stinky and Harold look seriously ill) so they may as well lack the primary ones. The only use for the "bits" they actually have is waste disposal.

There's only 2 biological genders, 3 mental ones, and quite a few sub-genders. Also, I like to judge using eyelashes.

That didn't answer my question at all. Even if you assume there's only two genders, you can just pick whatever since you can't tell the difference anyway. So why do you need someone to tell you what gender they are, rather than you just picking one for them?

Duplicants aren't humans, maybe they don't have any gender, as they get printed and don't need to have sex.

How about intersexuals? And there are much more than 3 mental genders, as every human is different. And I tell you a secret: men haven't less eyelashes than women ;)

It's like the first rule of cartoons. :) When there's no other way to show it's female, you either add eyelashes or a big pink bow on top of the head. The dupes probably looked too cute with the pink bows so they must have settled on eyelashes instead

Edit: On male eyelashes: at least where I live, it's fashionable among women to have their eyelashes stand out more with makeup or even fake ones added on top. This was probably the current fashion when these animation/cartoon rules came about as well and it has become associated with women

That moment when you realize the next update needs to come because people have waaay to much time on their hands to be discussing the sex of printed entities.  (please don't hate just a bite of satire)

My opinion is this.... when you print out stuff from your computer do you identify the printed material with genders? It's just printed material. :D

I'm trying to make the amount of genders simple so it dosen't sound overwhelming, and some woman like to put emphasis on there eyelashes.

Well that escalated quickly.

I'm going to try and resist the urge to get involved in this mess. Instead, I will posit that dupes, like bread, have only two genders: whitebread and wholemeal.

It is vitally important to my mental health that I can tell for certain at a glance which bread every duplicant has under their clothes.

I just want to know if the game have any gender specifications in the files. Tynan Sylvertr, creator of RimWorld or Paradox Interactive store ALL info in files. Crusader Kings 2 track huge number of hidden character parameters as well. I am not asking anyone to accept my view, just asking about ne parameter
