Frog Rain

Recommended Posts

So I got Don't Starve Together in late June/early July and once we actually got past not starving in winter and Deerclops, we were not prepared for the frog rain. Last time, everyone was huddled in the base, hiding from the frogs, while I sat under a tree far away with a straw hat, pretty parasol, and traps all around me. We were doing okay until someone accidentally opened the gate in the base... Chaos. So this time we're trying to find out what to do, but we're debating if we should have a wall and a gate with traps in front, or just run around with traps away from the base. Or lead them somewhere for an emergency army. Any good ideas from all you experts?

Edit: Once we actually got past not starving in winter and "thinking" we mastered killing Deerclops. That was basically the only time he didn't wreck us all.

"Emergency army" idea wouldn't work, as DST frogs from frog rains will simply despawn when unloaded.

Just throw a bunch of traps down around you and lead the frogs through them, it's not hard as long as you're careful.

If you're implying that you have a wall around your base, with a gate to get in and out, I'd suggest against that. Outside of aesthetics, walls aren't very good for anything, especially defense. Even if some mobs will just walk against them without breaking them, most mobs like hounds will simply break them and keep coming after you. Leaving you trapped inside with the only way out being right past them.

I realize that was some unasked-for KCDA advice, but it really does help in the long run.

I don't think walls are very useful either. Another idea is could we use Abigail?

This is how I deal with the frog rain = When it starts me and everybody else starts to run as far from the base as we can because the frogs are falling only around the players ... So when the rain stops we go back in the base make a few trap and catch all frogs around the base without dealing with the majority (that are far from the base) .

Abigail will draw aggro from all the frogs, but unlike spiders, they don't stun-lock.  She won't survive the fight, but if it's night, she might take down 50+ frogs with her.  Better than nothing.

Beefalo herds, especially large ones, will mess the frogs up.  I'd recommend getting a beefalo hat beforehand.  You might lose a few beefalo, but not many.

Alternatively, the frogs will easily kill Goose, since it has no area attack or assistance.  It will kill two dozen before it dies.  If you take this option, be ready for the fight between the surviving frogs and the enraged moslings.  Word of warning: the moslings will assume you are the killer, but frogs will sometimes attack them and draw aggro.

If you have a tallbird fort, the frogs and tallbirds will more or less wipe each other out, with the few survivors easy to finish off.  This also makes it easy to mine all the rocks, and provides an excellent opportunity to start moving bunny hutches in.

Otherwise, you can use tentacles, clockworks, hound mounds, dragonfly, treeguards, that dang ewecus you've been avoiding... the key is frogs will attack anything that crosses their path.

Thanks. Also, what's a tallbird fort? And in leading them to Goose or any other mobs to fight them, should I lead them by hitting one to aggro all, or just taking the ones that are already chasing me?

You can either catch them in traps, lead to beefalo "my personal favorite ", or hide under ground. If you lead to beefalo they will give you lots of food without the waste of resources to make traps. If you don't need the meat you can go underground. Frog rain is a God sent to me.

In one of my game, i had killer bee not that far from my base. Far enough so i never ran into them by mistake, but close enough so during frog rain i was able to make them attack each other (sure, it require a little work). After that, free frog legs, honey and honeycomb (i let the bee and frog kill each other and destroy the wasphive).

Beefalo are also a good option.

Excuse you, you must've sneezed a very strange sentence right here.

Using frogs against the M/G is great if you are in need of down feathers. Otherwise beefalo are the way to go so long as you have a beefalo hat. Food for days, and essentially years if you use bundling wrap.

Always know where the two closest Goose Geese are at the beginning of spring and run to them when the frogs start falling. You don't need to lead the frogs over because they fall around the players. Don't be in your base or near anything you want to work on like trees while they're falling.

You might want to tell your friends that one way DS is different from real life is that your base provides no meaningful shelter. Never run to or be in your base when a giant, hounds, frog rain, etc starts. It won't help you to be there and you could get the base or your fellow players wrecked. The thing to remember in DST is that it's easier to revive a dead player than to rebuild a wrecked base. It's better to die fighting a giant than to lead it back to the base.

yeah this would normally happen if its the wendy by her self (normally if you want to go this route make sure the wendy has at least 8-10 precharged abby flowers somewhere) but if there is a group of people helping out to cull the frog army  and the rain is long enough you can cull plenty of the frogs.

That there is one thing I like to do cause its just mass food. and also being a wendy player myself.

other things to do is probably just have them go to a large beefalo herd or have plenty of grass and twigs so you can trap them.

I wouldn't recommend going to a Goose cause if the frogs are still falling when the moslings aggro they have a possibility of restarting the frog rain again the next day.

Personally I feel that weather pains are kinda an overkill for frogs and it's pretty expensive. So its pretty wasteful. Will not suggest using weather pains unless you are feeling rich and wasteful. Rather save these weather pains for toadstool fight.

Yeah... I don't think that early in the game -- based on how our games go -- we'll be able to get volt goat horns.
