The Ruins are one of the lesser appreciated places in Don't Starve. It's a great place to explore and really gives you that feeling of mystery and imminent danger. You could probably set up a pretty nifty base down there too if there weren't so many nightmare fissures.

Once when I was down in the Ruins, I started to think, what are the Ruins anyways? I did a bit of research and found that the Ruins are supposedly the remnants of what was once a grand civilization known as the Ancients; highly skilled in magic and technology, as shown by their Ancient Pseudo-Science and army of Clockworks. However, their powers also created shadow creatures which eventually overthrew their civilization.

"The overuse of fuel was their downfall." - Maxwell examining Nightmare Light

Looking at it all, what else could the Ancients have down? Many ruins biomes leave remnants of the Ancient civilization; the Ancient Pseudo-Science Stations, Ancient Relics, and Broken Clockworks. But what other great things could the Ancients have accomplished? They might've had some sort of trading center or means of transportation. How did they mine/obtain so much Thulecite and so many rare gems? Mine shafts maybe? What if these all had their own biomes? I would think some of these places would be booby trapped with fake chests, and influxes of magic.

The Ancients were also overthrown by the Shadows. What could They have done since then? From A New Reign, it appears that the Shadow Pieces are a result of the Shadows utilizing the Ancients' magic/technology, hence the clockwork/chess design of each Shadow Piece (Or maybe Charlie had something to do with it). Does Charlie even care about the Ruins? If she's on the Nightmare Throne, the Shadows must have some influence over her, and They must have wanted something from the Ancients' if they overthrew them. They could be trying to use Charlie for a much larger scheme. Could They be reshaping the Ancients' civilization for their own benefit? Seeing how well the Ancient's utilized the power of Thulecite and Nightmare Fuel, what could They create with such powers?

It'd be great to have more Ruins content, but seeing as there are only two updates left in A New Reign, it's unlikely that the Ruins will be touched at all anywhere in the near future; but we can still imagine.

I don't really think it was the Ancients that created Them, but there's no real proof one way or the other.

And with the last two updates, you never know. The possibility still exists that the last two could be caves and ruins content. I sure hope at least something is done with the Ancient Guardian before ANR is over.

im pretty sure it was confirmed on a stream that the last part of anr will be cave related, not sure about ruins.

Well they said that they will work on the ancient guardian and they showed concept art for something made with the orange moonlens so we will definitely get some ruins stuff.

I must have missed that. Anyone got an image of that they could share?

Literally. I think the Ancients were actual humanoids whom THEY first approached, seduced with power way beyond Maxwell's, then drove mad and incorporated into their parasitic dimension bit by bit. Kind of seeing a little oneshot, some young villager's perspective, Innocent Inaccurate, in regard to the ancient guardian. I think it was part of their worship. And the nightmare fuel changed it just like it changed other things.

I wonder how long the pigs have been in the ds world and if the shadow creatures have a leader that is in Charlie giving her this power..maybe, we beat them and they let her go, giving us a new character and  us finding out more lore on these next two added content updates.

I really hope we get to see an Ancient in-game. I would love to have a boss fight after possibly reviving it somehow and then see it draw too much power from the shadows and become one? Even if we don't get to interact with it, it would be nice to see some more lore behind them. (And more stuff for DS?)

I would vote for Maxwell introduceing the pig tribes. In singleplayer, he says he shaped most of the world. His quotes for the ruins are different though. I kind of imagine their surface world caving in and THEM or Maxwell closing it in.

Before adding any ruins content, I think the dev should give the Guardian some love by fixing "Epic Ruins" and "Fighting in the Ruins" not playing when it's supposed to first. His soundtrack got stolen by those nasty Shadow Pieces. :(

The tracks are what made the Ruins great about Don't Starve after all.

THEY have probably been there even before the Ancients and continue to exist in a world far beyond humanity's capability of understanding. I'm probably drawing straws here too but I feel like the Ancients were once part of Hyperborea from Clark Ashton Smith's Hyperborean Cycle. Before the arctic became the frozen wasteland we know of today, it was once a lush land of jungles and the last remnants of the dinosaurs. It was filled with magic users of all types.

Unfortunately the approaching ice age is basically what destroyed Hyperborea and it's possible that this particular civilization tried to save themselves and ended up over-using the nightmare fuel driving themselves into insanity which drove their civilization into oblivion.

Could work, more or less, although I am thinking about HERE still being a different, parasitic dimension, existing as a blob on the surface of the multiverse, stretched and puckered if you will. How about brainstorming the Ancients in Art and Lore or something?

Seconded. The guy's a mystery. Not even the wiki has a entry on him.
