Anyone playing DST solo?

Recommended Posts

Having gotten a bit bored with ROG and SW, I decided to check out DST because I'd heard there were some differences and some new content that might be fun. I didn't realize that it *looks* so much better, especially the crafting menus. I did try logging on to a few servers to see what multiplayer is like, but I pretty much have no interest in that and nothing I experienced there did anything to change my mind.

So far, it's gone well in Endless mode. I've made it to summer in the caves and only died once, and the non-combat strats I favor in single-player mean that the increased strength of the giants/mob doesn't affect how I play that much. I haven't dealt with disease or variant plants yet, though. If anyone else does this and has any tips, I'd love to hear them. One thing about DST is that the wiki has a lot less information about its unique features.

Disease means you have:

- grass tufts or grassy gekkos

- saplings or twiggy trees (which drop logs and twiggy nuts too, but require an axe)

- berrybushes_1 or juicy berrybushes

You also get petrified trees for rocks over time, but they don't remove boulders. Additionally, sources of those changeable resources:

- berrybushes_2 are unaffected

- spiky bushes give twigs all the time

- grass tufts on savannah turf don't get diseased

- grass and twigs can be found in tumbleweeds

If you don't mind, which servers did you play on? Have you encountered griefers?

Imagine if, just like boulder rocks are renewable due to meteors, when petrified trees are the resource variant, instead of meteors in the places where meteors would normally fall, there would be earthquakes and from them, the petrified trees would grow up from the ground. Or something like that, cause petrified trees really make no sense in how they got there; even less so than the normal boulders!

Yes, and a giant one eyed deer that's dead set on killing everything AND your base buildings (But note, not things like trees and berry bushes) that only happens to come specifically at winter after a certain amount of days makes tons more sense than stone trees starting to grow.

Also, aren't their marble trees? HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN THAT, SCIENCE!?

I feel so offended I'M GONNA...  ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Marble trees were placed there by Maxwell, I believe, so that's his magic creating them, same probably goes with Deerclops, only it's timed magic :p

Where as for Petrified trees... probably magic too. Though it's a shame they're not the renewable resource in their resource variant and it doesn't really matter whether you get petrified trees or normal boulders as the variant; there's literally almost no point to them except less resources + less hits and aesthetic reasons. And different quotes, of course, I think. They're like the most pointless implementation ever created. I'm serious on this, if they act basically just like normal boulders, what's their point, Klei? If this affected meteor areas as well, then there would be some meaningful differentiation at least. As it currently stands though... V('^')V

You can play a version where you host it on your own computer (and I'm just using a laptop) for yourself. No one else knows it exists. I'm basically playing it as a single player game. This is an encouraged option for beginners who want to practice first before getting into a multiplayer game. I'm mostly doing it for the different version of the caves, which I like a lot. The set pieces have been very good to me: I got a walking cane AND a puffy vest. Haven't tried the ruins yet...

Well, yeah actually. I don't disagree with you there. Normal gameplay is completely unaffected by them. Maybe if they have earth shatteringly slim chances to drop gems or thulecite? I don't know, just a suggestion. At least they aren't as bad as twiggy trees, making me restart my server 19 times... *grumble grumble*

Anyway, on topic.

I normally play DST alone as, well, hardly anyone joins my server outside of @GiddyGuy, @Chris1488, and sometimes I get visited by @Mikeadatrix. Lord knows why they play with me, my server is usually a buggy, laggy, chaotic mess.

I personally like playing DST more than standard DS because the fights are way better in my opinion. Minus the lag. Sadly, one of my issues is that I don't have a beefy computer, I have a macbook pro from like... 2008. DST caves aren't too friendly with me.

As for all the new features, just remember, when alone, always take a pig or another combat follower with you (If you're webber or something) when hunting koalefants. The ewecus feasts on singleplayer souls....

As for everything else, eh, it'll come to you. I still don't know exactly how disease and all this stuff works, but I don't frankly care on finding out.

That's funny. I'm not into combat myself, unless it's pretty easy, like a depth worm, and the lag in DST makes kiting nearly impossible for me. I basically just lure enemies to wherever some other mob will finish them off for me -- beefalo, tree guards or tentacles. But I'm using a MacBook Air from 2011, so not much better, and the caves are working for me.

This is sort of where I would argue DST game design fails; it's not a game you can pick up starting with multiplayer and where learning from your mistakes isn't going to be a kick in the balls to others. Which is kind of a shame.

@Rellimarual you do know about disabling movement prediction, right? Have you got it disabled?

@Weirdobob what's wrong with twiggy trees? They now loot twigs themselves, so what's so problematic about them?

Twiggy trees are upgraded saplings now though.

Gather all the grass you can and plant it on savanah turf for grass gecko worlds, get spiky bushes and place tons of twiggy trees around your base, and berries?...eh they're aren't really important you just have to dig up the one going extinct and then replant them when the soil is okay with them being in the ground.

I think decreasing the number of player slots to one is widely known (or I am making a fool of myself right now). I was curious if you've seen how gameplay changes when there are at least two people playing (sharing resources, helping each other). Glad to hear the setpieces are kind to you too :).

They play for YOU, not the server! Anyway, the part about the ewecus is particularly noteworthy. Because it has a ranged spit attack. Pigs will eat the mucus happily though. Not sure about spiders.

I dabbled a bit in some public servers, but it just doesn't interest me that much. It might be better with people I actually knew, but I'm older, and my friends (who play DS) are never free to play at the same time I am. Besides, DS is the thing I do to escape dealing with other people, which is a big part of my real life, not to mention my Internet life! The fact that 75% of the forum seems to be about griefers or annoying things that even well-meaning players do also doesn't make me interested in exploring it further.

DS in all its forms is the only game I play, really. I love it, and have spent hours playing it, and I really only turned to DST despite the multiplayer aspect because I wanted some new content.

I just wanted to say the amount of topics about griefing... well, let's just say some balance would be nice. And most public servers are wild fields without an active admin. I suggest to avoid those.

Have you tamed a beefalo yet?

No! I'm excited about that. I need to figure out how to hunt Ewecus with pigs, though, since more than one player has advised me it can't be done alone. Usually by the first year or two in single player I rarely track koalefants and only to keep them around my base for manure.

It seems like the only giants that really come after you in DST are Deerclops and Bearger, right? Also, I notice that if I've spent the summer in the caves (my usual plan), there aren't hounds waiting for me the moment I come out, which is nice.

The people aspect of DST is what makes it exciting (for me). Base-building, even if they add differences to DST, can already be experienced in singleplayer. It's spawning in Winter when the land has been stripped of resources, or trying to survive while keeping an eye on that weird player hanging around your base-- those are the things I come back to DST for.

Different strokes, etc. I don't even build elaborate bases, usually, since walls get on my nerves. Typically, I start a new world then work on it until I've stripped all three ruins of loot and then jump or start over.

One question: Does the lantern glitch work in DST -- that is, if you place a lantern on the ground and leave it on, then log out and re-log, does it stay lit forever as long as you don't pick it up?

I can't get the lantern glitch to work in either the caves or the overworld. I also attempted to do something the Wiki suggested to get scales from Dragonfly without having to kill it: putting it to sleep, dropping two stacks of gunpowder -- 7 and 13 -- then lighting the 7 stack. This didn't work. Other than that, it's just the ruins. It seems like it would almost be worth it to bring rock lobsters to the surface to fight Dragon Fly.

It does work, but it takes some effort to get the spacing / timing right. I think my wife and I rolled the server back about 8 times before we managed to pull it off.
