Woodie players, why do you play Woodie?

Recommended Posts

Woodie is a character I've always been intrigued by, but none of his perks seem to be a upside. (except for Lucy, she's ok.) The Curse just doesn't seem worth it to me, not because of the loss of stats, that, I can deal with, it's just the loss of time that bugs me, "oh, full moon, well... there goes my plans to do 'insert task here.'" not to mention Caves and Ruins are a huge pain in the ass with the ever looming threat of lycanthropy, Woodie players, I ask you, Why do you play Woodie? What things do you do differently then other characters? Is Woodie worth my time? Is there a god? Is life a lie? Why am I asking these things?

But ladyDEEEEEEEE I thought you had time AND patience. D:

Also I really hope before dst gets out of the beta they give Woodie a buff cause he honestly doesn't seem to bring anything to the table along with Webber but then again they did make his minions not attack nearby players so maybe not as useless.

The werebeaver is frustrating. But Woodie is my favourite character. Why?

First off. I love how he looks, talks and his personality. That's a HUGE upside.

Lucy is my godess. I live how she talks with me and I love the ability to chop down trees easily.

Werebeaver is a really nice way to fight monsters that are tough. A bit too strong if you ask me...

In DST he's a great gatherer, one of the best in my opinion. He gathers wood like a beaver, does not have to care about sanity because of his sanity boost when planting trees, ahs alot of insulation because of his beard which makes him really good in winter and is also really great at recruiting pigs when fighting bosses.

I'll ask you back @SoggyNachos why do you play Wes? He's just worse than everybody else. But you like how he looks and his personality don't you? I'm kinda in the same boat as you.

That's nice tree, eh?

The transformation is amazing early-mid game, even if you lose a day it's still worth it because you get much more resources than you would as Woodie, you can basically chop/mine/dig/destroy entire biomes in a few minutes. Also, he has no weaknesses besides the forced full moon transformation.

In a sense,  Woodie can be seen as the hardest character to use. Everyone can do some extra grind or use certain items to cover their weaknesses but Woddie can't escape the full moon, there is nothing you can do to stop it so your only choice is to embrace it. Learn all the days and always have a plan for when it happens, either you stay at your base and wait safely or spread logs around the place you want and start wrecking. By calculation where you will end your transformatiion you can drop your backpack with gear/food there to make sure you wake up next to it so you get your stats back and don't die to a random hound attack.

He requires a lot of time management and preparation to be effective but his gameplay is very unique and challenging, I think he can be very fun to use in the right hands.

Pfff who needs a Werebeaver when i can just summon a giant foot to chop me enought wood for an entire seasoncycle.

On-Topic.

Woodie was always a character i consider simple to understand hard to master. His downside looks pretty harsh at first loosing a day worth of collecting stuff and reseting all your stats to about 50 looks pretty step for a new player. However once you learned the basegame enought you consider the Werebeaver transformation more of a blessing rather then a curse.

Cause Woodie is the only char that can fight most creatures a lot easier because of his Werebeaver form. For once the health of the beaver is easy to replenish as long as there are some eatable things near you giving you a big HP buffer that you might need for fighting bigger baddies such as Treeguards, Spiderqueens or even Giants. Second of his Nightvision makes it easier to continue fighting even if it turns to night because Werebeavers don't give 2 s**t about Charlie. And then there is the fact that the Beaver is unphased by Insanity Auras meaning i can fight a lot of the Giants without my brain turning into mush and having to stop and regain it (except i'm playing Wigfrid then i welcome the Insanity).

And then there is the fact that the Werebeaver is also a great utility Tool because he's almost all tools combined into one neat package and he has no durability only fuel to keep gnawing so you can easily strip an area of all it's important ressourxes without having to waste Flint/Gold for new tools every other second.

As for his statresets opon transforming back well if you'r a seasoned player you should know all the recipes that easily regain HP, Hunger and Sanity so that's really only a problem if you transform to early and have to deal with Insanity. Only other downside is that you have to carefully plan your trips to the Caves/Ruins because it's not so easy to find a good spot to transform back and reclaim your items without getting killed so best bet is to go into the Caves after the last fullmoon because otherwise you run the risk of transforming and leaving your stuff in pitch black and unable to be reclaimed until much later. Finally the last downside is dying during Winter/Summer and to far away from your base. Again something that's more about planning rather then it being hard if you can handle the beaver properly you should have no problems to transform back just next to your base and not freeze/overheat to death.

So all in all i always liked him and i should play another round with him it's been a while (not SW though he's not as good in those worlds).

They should do him as he is in the DS Together - he would be much more playable in my opinion...

Quite frankly i can't stand DST Woodie having to manage that god forsaken Woodmeter is just annyoing and in the long run i loose more Wood because of that. Seriously i would prefer if DST Woodie was more like regular Woodie

1. Get 5+ Monster meat

2. Go to pig village

3. Get 5+ pig followers

4. Hit a tree once with your axe

5. Watch as the pigs chop down an entire forest for you.

I think Woodie is a useless character

I've been playing woodie alot in DST, where honestly I consider him borderline OP. He's the easiest character to manage your sanity on a whim. Need to go insane for nightmare fuel? Spend a few minutes as the beaver. Need to recover from that zero sanity? Ask your pal for a stack of pinecones if you dont already have a stack on you. He also has the same stats as wilson, and a beard thats nice for winter (not as good as a full grown wilsons beard, granted, but its good enough). Oh you cant shave it in the summer? Well lets run into the caves where overheating isnt a thing (and where you often enough stay for summer to avoid overworld combustion anyway.) What about the full moon you ask? Leave a stack of logs on the ground and your fine, just transform back. He also has the extended follower thing in DST but im honestly not sure how useful that is, dont need a pigs help to do a lumberjacks job. (Well its more that I only use pigs to transform them for meat and pigskins)

In single player, I've only really used him a few times, but thats because his beaver form is simply too strong to be fun, just stay in it for (nearly) the entire game and you literally have one meter to watch. If you dont want to stay in beaver form all the time its still great to gather resource or fight without wasting items durability. Also, the price might be steep to go into werebeaver but its a fixed cost, ie the more you use it the same it takes, so demo an area, kill a giant, or otherwise, and then turn back (preferably right before the night ends to not waste a day).

I'm also a follower of "I like his look/quotes/whatever so I play him". But let's see what you can do with Woodie :

Health, Sanity and Hunger

So it is often said that Woodie has trouble managing that because of his curse. What if I told you that you can use the curse at your advantage for those? So you are insane at 0 Sanity? Just turn into Werebeaver for a +50 Sanity. Health low? Same idea. Hunger it is even better, as long as you are careful about when the next full moon is you can easily save 200 points of Hunger.

Winter and Summer

Woodie has the absolutely best tool to get through those seasons. Just turn into Werebeaver and forget everything about Freezing and Overheating while cleaning the map from all the rocks and stuff. My first full year in Don't Starve was with Werebeaver when I was unprepared for Summer (no Deerclops) I turned into Were and survived like that.

Skip Days

Forget gathering loads of Grass and Twigs. Just plant tree and use them to turn again and again into Werebeaver to quickly skip days. This is rarely necessary but it can be useful if you want to farm a boss.

Gathering

It has already been mentioned that Woodie is better at farming wood, particularly true in DST where you can't use the Old Bell. But using it only for Wood is a waste Werebeaver can gather pretty much everything. Rocky Biome? Enjoy all your stones in 2 seconds. Savanna? Gotta uproot all those Grass for my base. He can even Hammer structures or farm mobs.

Fighting

Being able to fight without Sanity loss is nice. Since he always turn during full moon that's the ideal occasion to clean some Werepigs and get tons of Meat and Pig Skin.

Conclusion

Is Woodie OP? Certainly not. Is he weak? Neither, he brings enough upside to counter his downside. It is true that Woodie require more planning but in my opinion that is the reason he is much more interesting to play than most of the others.
