World jumping is not implemented in DST yet (may never be), but that does not change the discussion much in this thread.

All this discussion can be considered as stuff happening past Day 800. (no too many spikes and you hate to bother to play with whenever you plan on some combat), played in mostly long-term nomadic exploration based play style (too lazy and not so dependent on a base, anyway).

For long-term pro players, defined as having no problem in killing giants, clearing 5 T3 spider dens, several clockworks or pigs (you know what I mean) alone without help of other players or followers, which would be the best character to play around in the Ruins as long as possible without too much hassle? By without hassle, I mean only setting up essential base structures in Ruins, such as Crockpot, and not having to carry around too many items in the inventory (e.g. clothing items and types of basic resources), being able to walk with cane most of the time and not sleep at least within 10 days etc, living without a backpack and a stockpiled base most of the time.

Wigfrig mostly has to carry around rocks and golds for most of the time, and stockpile silk and rope to sleep when both health and sanity is low (food that provide both are either non-meat or hard to obtain for her). Excels in combat.

WX-78, living alone in DST world, can quickly get enough gears to use for emergency as well as upgrading. High stats enables him to use dark sword to quickly finish off foe without getting insane and chased by shadows at the same time. Eating bad food makes it possible to get stats back with ease. But for efficient combat depends on living logs, which Wifrig could live without.

Wickerbottom, using excessive gears (fire farm with flig-o-matic) and her bedtime stories, could stockpile almost all resources in the world. Being picky eater might not matter for a base dwerller, but is one more problem to think about for long-term nomadic exploration based play style.

Maxwell can play with magic at will, but depends on cut reeds and living logs due to his low stats. Night armor is his major clothing whenever any danger is potentially possible. Mashrooms comes too handy for him.

I am hypothesizing a scenario: coldest winter in Ruins in the Nightmare phase chased by several dozens of shadows and monkeys (well, you could just keep running with a very hot heat stone, but we are talking about being minimalist; heat stone is excessive item only useful for some periods of the year), then going through the labyrinth, locate and slay the guardian, then collect all the thulecite in the Sacred biome, going out from labyrinth with those, then getting chased by monkeys and 7 worms then having to kill (because you can!) all 7 worms solo (monkeys around, so no dropping of some items temporarily).

Which character?

Is this about Long term basing in ruin? Or Long term nomadic exploration in ruin? I am confessed :C.

All weapon and armor need grass/twigs/trees to craft. Are these allowed to bring to ruin and make renewable?

What do you mean by long teams? Are we talking about 1000 days in ruin and only the ruin excluding the cave area?

Walk with cane in ruin for 10 days is kinda pointless. At 800 days the ruin is already cleared out of clockwork. Most unwanted monkey pods are destroyed. The boss were long gone. All you are left to fight are the shadow when the insanity hits, and depthworms. The ruin is so small so you will end up coming back to the same spot every day.

At 800 days the ruin will have rocks/ gold/ red gem all over the place that Wigfrig can use, provided that all moleworm are killed on sight and all moleworm holes are destroyed.

Last I heard fire farm are fixed, and there aren't any reeds in the ruin to craft more books. Also Wickerbottom can't sleep at all.

Maxwell aren't in the game so no point talking about him.

Gears aren't renewable so "in the long term" it shouldn't be considered.

Monkeys are very easy to farm and provide fuel and food. Fishstick can be used to gain health. Sanity isn't an issue as pro players can usually deal with shadows anyway, so sleeping isn't really necessary either.

I should clarify that, although Ruins are quite small and could be cleared out of most resources that are not renewed by earthquake within at most 20 days, the goal here is to live in the Ruins in a nomadic fashion. So, yes, we should bring as less from aboveworld as possible, only bringing those that are absolutely necessary, and we can go up once in a while (once every year?).

I am intrigued by the fact that, though you are seemingly going for Wigfrig, the vote currently has no voters for her.

I can stay in the ruin for as long as the grass/twigs/log last, any character.

Winter and spring will burn through my typlical 40 grass/40twigs/20logs supply in 10 days so 1 year without assess to renewable grass/twigs/logs is almost impossible. If the pro player pack his inventory full with grass/twigs and logs, using a krampus sack and carry eyebrella +40 teeths with him so he can repair the eyebrella with sewing kit, that pro player *may* be able to stay for longer than 1 full year.  I suppose if the pro player place many fire pits all over the ruin he can be burning poop and beard hair all the time to stay dry/warm. Thou being stuck by a fire pit kinda take away the nomadic element.

Wigfrig being able to craft helmet out of rock and gold does save a bit of grass and log here and there. Wolfgang can stay in mighty form all the time farming monkey, so if the pro player we are talking about can dodge every attack and falling rocks and hence have no need for armor, then Wolfgang is the better choice here.

Webber is a moderately good choice, spiders aren't hostile to him, and they can be recruited as followers giving him access to an army if he needs one, with a simple grass/twig farm you can use the simple animal traps to kill spiders from nests without drawing agro so you have easy silk, spider glands for healing, and monster meat for food, Webber receives no penalties for monster foods, that said he also doesn't heal from them at all. He also slowly grows a silk beard akin to wilsons, I think it offers minimal insulation, but in the ruins that's not really a major concern.

Wigfrid makes a good choice as Mday said, she has easy crafting recipes for strong melee gear, she also heals health and sanity for kills which you'll be making alot of especially when the nightmares come out.

If combat is your concern, armor wise the logsuit is fairly ideal for everyone except wigfrid, and next to the nightsword, the hambat is actually quite the efficient weapon, it decays overtime and is best used in the winter as it will last longer, but it has infinite uses until the weapon rots and has its damage scale to rot level, at its weakest its slightly weaker than the basic spear, at strongest it actually is stronger than wigfrid with her spear, alternatively you could make the bat-bat, though you'll have to pay a visit to the cave layer to get the batilisk wings needed for it, it's about spear level if I recall but it drains health on hit, but it drains sanity if you hit something and don't gain health. The hambat could be easily produced in the ruins, as you need 2 raw meat a couple twigs and 1 pigskin, which will be easy to get if you move a small village of pigmen in with you, which is suggested for everyone, even webber as it adds just one more source of food, it also allows you to craf tthe football helmet if body armor isn't doable for your setup

I was greatly in favor of Maxwell, since he can eat pretty much anything, since he does not have to worry about Sanity, and use all the magic items at will. But his HP requires a head/body slot to be equipped whenever some danger could be foreseen.
