Dealing with destructive trolls

Recommended Posts

Problem

It's easy for trolls to ruin worlds, by running around with a torch and burning stuff.  Trolls can ruin your camp faster than you can recognize and kick them.  But I realized last night that there is a solution.

Solution

Force-close DST and start it up again.  Do not exit the program properly through the menu, because that will save your progress (or the destruction the troll has wrought).  You can force DST closed through ALT+F4, the task manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL), or by clicking the 'Close' button (if you have DST) running in a window).  You'll lose all your progress, but at least your world won't be depleted of finite resources like any berry bushes, grass, etc that you've concentrated.

Make sure you force-close the game immediately when you notice the damage the troll has done.  If you're lucky, that will be before the game's last autosave (these are pretty far apart, which usually leaves you time to respond).

To Klei

I'm posting this solution in the hopes that it will help some people between now and whenever DST has more effective anti-trolling measures in place.  If any Klei forum admins agree it's a good temporary solution, could you please post it somewhere prominent so people will see?

Thanks for the input guys, I've edited the original post.

Again I'm recommending that Klei post this solution somewhere that people can see it.  Trolls are a serious threat to player experience, and I believe they are the reason why most people are playing on locked (password protected) servers.  I would like my fellow game hosts to know this stopgap solution, so we can all play together without fear.

In the meantime, can I request a name change for this thread?  Something like: How to undo damage from trolls would be more descriptive.

I would like to point this out, Griefing is the term you are looking for, Trolling is slightly different e.g when someones going insane I get my green mushrooms out and give the person the shrooms. If the person doesnt cook the shrooms, he will go insane, if he does well hell stay sane. OFC if he kills himself I'll revive him for amusing me.

However griefing is to actively seek and add onto a player's misfortune and just downright make the game less enjoyable.

sidenote: I think Willow will prolly make the best pvp-er due to her ability to burn all the resources around her, and being able to move in the dark, sanity and hp isnt a big problem cuz shrooms exist but I guess you can say its also griefing...

Yeah! Why are you trying to play with strangers!? Why are you trying to build a community in a game? This is all stupid. You should ONLY be playing with people you know. And when those people you know stop playing? So do you. Gosh.

Seriously though mobas have cancerous communities that are a detriment to all gaming communities. It's a hilarious comparison. I'd argue that 4 chan has a better community than LoL.

4chan is trash. LOL is trash.

But greifing is fun.

why not just do a little tapping on your keyboard and spawn the stuff back in? Ban the guy, boom problem solved

It'd be easier to roll back rather than type "DebugSpawn(" ", ) or c_spawn(" ", ) or c_give(" ", ) continuously.

I think it's more "if you play with strangers, eventually someone is going to wreck your ****".

The devs are working on implementing more things to help people who want to play "together" but have been harmed by griefers. From what I've seen in posts and the DevCasts, they're focusing on each server host to set the rules of the world, and the primary goal is encouraging us to work together in the game instead of having to constantly fight against rogues and respawn what they've destroyed. They didn't intend this as a MP fight, they intended this to be friends-joining-friends (even new people). But griefers are inevitable in MP games.

What you said is what I do also, but I think OP is looking for something a little less... typing- and time-intensive. Spawning in 20 berry bushes (or whatever) takes time to pickup even with the multiple-DebugSpawn command. It's all one-at-a-time instead of en-masse, plus there's the additional time to replant and grow. He's looking for ideas that can deal with griefers quickly, without so much damage control.

How about reputation system when you can mark a player as a griefer, and after few reports hes marked, until he gets few reports in favor of him not being a griefer (one player can vote for the same guy only once but he can undo his vote to vote for the 2nd option)

That can prove really counterproductive, as Griefers can report non griefers as a griefer...
