The Queen of Stupid Deaths

I bought this game on a whim because I liked the title, and the concept in general appealed to me.  I downloaded it and saw the Tim Burton graphic novel-like artwork, and apparent lack of a tutorial.  I wandered a bit, ate a few carrots and berries, and picked up some grass and twigs.  I thought this was a rather simplistic child's game.  Then night fell.  I was a little surprised that there seemed no way to continue a game after you're died (I've since discovered touchstones and meat effigies).

After I spawned again in a new world, I started to pay more attention to my interface and realized that making light was going to be pretty critical.  I made my first torch.  Then I started playing around with tools and was rewarded with my first pickaxe.  And then regular tree cutting axe.  I thought since I obviously had the basics down, this was going to be pretty easy.

Since then I've died by wandering into spider nests, ponds full of killer frogs, lureplants, and tallbirds.  I've been hunted down by hounds.   I started a campfire in the woods, set the nearby trees on fire and then ran for my life only to hit the shore and burn to death.  I spawned a tree guard, got chased down, and then murdered.  I've frozen in the winter, and baked in the summer.  A clockwork knight stomped me.  I've been caught off guard by a rain of frogs invading my base.   I am proud to say that I've never actually starved to death, though I have come pretty close.

I've played both RoG and the base game.  I like the added depth of the expansion, but of course there are more ways to die stupid deaths.

And I no longer think that this is a rather simplistic children's game.

Haha, rule number 1 in the don't starve universe: Never underestimate Maxwell!

Says the one who still dies in the second night because he forgets to collect logs before nightfall...

A player makes a simple mistake, and the game punishes him or her with death. I love it!

Welcome to the game and the Forums. When I first started playing I went thru all the same things as you. Took me quite a while to make it thru my first winter and that was only on vanilla version. I couldn't imagine starting with RoG.

Thanks for the welcome

It is a lot of fun, for sure.  I'm playing a game without RoG right now, and it looks so far like I might be okay when winter comes. But I've thought that before, so who knows.  Anyways, the "always pay attention or else" element make for much more gripping gameplay than I would have ever thought.

I hope this game continues to be supported and grow, though to be honest I can't imagine burdening myself onto someone else in co-op play, though I would make an easy target in PVP.

There's no such thing as a stupid mistake so long as you learn from it

Rule of thumb when deciding whether or not to do something:

Don't Starve Get Cocky

I have died more times to me trying to do something that no-one in their right mind would have even thought of doing, things like going down into caves in winter, tanking the MooseGoose, etc.

tanking the MooseGoose

I am very guilty of this. VERY.

(It was worth it, even if i did kill it and then die horribly from moslings after)

Though i admit i may have not been in the right mind...

On-topic: Welcome to Don't Starve. I, er, We, hope you enjoy your stay here. That's pretty much how i see a lot of people learn Don't Starve. You die a lot, and each time you die, you learn more. :3

I remember when I first saw Don't Starve around November 2012. A well-known Youtuber was playing the web-based version so it was still missing things like sanity, etc. I was caught off-guard at how much the game had evolved when I first picked it up last summer. What I came to realize with time was this: Mostly everything in the world wants you dead.

It's a relief to see things that don't want to kill you; like Chester or Rocks [Please don't add Rock Guardians Klei]

Anyways, I would suggest trying out Adventure Mode; you get as many tries as you want and there are no consequences if you die! Oh and welcome to the forums! ^^

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone.  I do feel a bit better about my impressive self-death toll.  I do have to admit that getting cocky has been the cause of many of my demises.  For example, one of the times I died to frog rain was because I tried to beat them to death.  I got one or two.  They had numbers on their side.  Lesson learned.

I haven't really thought about adventure mode.  It just seemed from the name that it would be harder to me.  I did find and enter Maxwell's door once, and ended up in "A cool Reception" (if I remember right, which seemed like a world with no berries, and I figured I would be best off just going back "home".  I will see if I can try this again, if only because I'd like to unlock the other hidden characters that I assume are in that mode.

A cold reception isn't the worst first, you could've gotten King Of Winter

Personally, i prefer starting with ACR or Archipelago for my first world

I used to like "The Game is Afoot" for a quickie winter, but with RoG Summer never ends after day 11.

I've gotten King of Winter about six consecutive times now. I was starting to wonder if they just decided that it was a permanent starting level until it finally gave me A Cold Reception.

I had 2 Touchstone activated in my world. I have found a Varg around day 10. I ran off from it to my base.

While using a road on day 19 at night with my lantern, I met with the Varg. I died quickly. On my first respawn, hounds came to attack me. I lured them near a Tallbird. After a few kiting, the Tallbird hit me. I wasn't wearing a log suit even if I had a Chest with 40 twigs and 40 flint and I placed an Evergreen *Farm* near my base.

On my second respawn, I decided to collect back all my items near the Varg. After collecting half of my items, a few Hounds bite me.

I should have made a Log Suit in both cases.

:(

Edit : I remember that I had a Treeguard near my base. It was less than a quarter day of walking.
