The Grue.

Recommended Posts

Ok, I tried searching charlie and Grue, but didn't find any topic about what I'm going to write. If the discussion had already taken place, than I am sorry, did my best to find it.

So, I got an idea about the "true" form of charlie after becoming the night monster.

First let's sum up what we know about her :

- It only attacks when in total darkness,

- There is no possible way of seeing the monster

- Maxwell recognises her rigt away when about to get attacked.

- Some people have been asking for bossfight, or some represenation of her, but they did not recieve it.

Now to the point  - I have an idea about how she looks like :

What if the Grue is night itself? Not the night monster, just the darkness?

Maybe the reason she doesn't appear is because Woodie isn't thinking about her in were beaver form, everyone else is clearly thinking of her, for they make a remark of her presence, perhaps, she only exists in their mind, perhaps all the characters are afraid of the dark, afraid of the unknown, of their imagination, that they fabricate a reason to avoid it at all costs, thus creating this supposed night monster so they won't have to face their fear.

I thought of that, but you aren't thinking of ANYTHING sane when you are insane including her, and she can kill you still. So it's a "seen" thing.

You don't have to be insane to be attacked by her, but I have no explanation as to how she can kill you, because every bit of evidence suggests she isn't a real being.

A) She only appears at night

B) She dissapears as soon as a light clicks on

And to those saying she IS the night, whenever the light goes off, she takes a little while to attack, if she were the night, she would be surrounding you at all times, and wouldn't need to take any time to attack

This suggests she is a actual being capable of being in only one place at a time, but how is she able to disperse as soon as a light turns up.

There's evidence suggesting she's

A figment of the characters imagination

The night

A nocturnal creature with a weakness to light

But which is it?

Actually, she  tuned into something far more worse than was known but you have seen them before in one form. Just don't blink

Can't see the video since im on a school computer and YT is blocked, but Im assuming its either SCP-137 or Weeping Angels

Edit - I think we need a subforum in the general discussion or art & lore forum for theories like this

@JoeW?

"23rd, you're not JoeW!"

Well Blaze I'm going to tell you something my grandfather would tell me when I made smartbutt remarks like that. Shut up and stop trying to play things on the piano. You're 6, you don't even know how to play the damn piano.

I think general discussion is the perfect place to talk about this, personally. Sure, you could call it lore and post it in Art & Lore but it wouldn't get as much going for it as it would here. This is a pretty general discussion about something directly related to Don't Starve, after all.

My idea, which I think makes the most sense(duh). is that Charlie/Grue is an actual thing. Can't be the night itself, woodie's werebeaver disproves that, and it can't be fear, as WX78 can still die to it. It makes perfect sense that the grue can diffuse into nothingness when light comes, heck that sounds normal compared to giant one eyed deer, furry two legged rhinos, and a self-conscious robot trapped  in a separate dimension by some really tall guy in a tux. I think the real question is how he can kill you in one hit, like how big is she or how does she do that?

But insanity has material effects, right?

Without spoiling anything, it can change a certain creature's drops, and it stays that way after you go back to normal.

So one can't really say that something having material effects means it isn't insanity.

I think something in Maxwell's magic gives your insanity metaphysical power, admittedly without knowing much about the lore.

Yes, the question remains if it's transmogrification or (like the old Dark Sword and current Night Armor; really, attacking with sticks/Treeguard logs and defending with parchment?!) your so-strong-belief that it dropped this way, so you make it true in your mind?

To be honest I think she is just the darkness in Don't Starve, like a sort of shadow creature with no solid physical form. The Werebeaver thing doesn't really disprove that because it's clearly just a means of not having Woodie be broken. You can't stop and build a fire in Werebeaver form and you can't change back at will, so if you weren't protected in some other way then you wouldn't even be able to use the Werebeaver because you'd just die lol.

If you see in the dark in any way, she never attacks. I mean her (other) official name is the freakin' Night Monster

I think Charlie, although monsterified, has one weakness. She hates the monster form she has and refuses to let anyone see her because its rather ugly. This maybe be why Maxwell chose to reside in a place where Charlie could move around freely. He loves Charlie and even though he can't see her, she may have given him company.

Considering how she got transformed to begin with, I believe she's just another shadow creature, thus disappearing after the night. Just a very special one. Sort of the boss of shadow creatures. The part about not attacking even in the dark if you can see I just take it as not wanting to be seen, for whatever reason. It's nothing weird for murderous, mutated monsters to want to stay hidden, even when hunting.

All these theories about Charlie seem inaccurate to me, so I thought of this:

Charlie is not scared of light at all. She is scared of being seen for what she has become. At night she has the advantage to attack you because humans can barely see in the dark. Charlie doesn't attack during the day because you have the advantage to see her. This explains why certain night-vision-beavers don't get attacked  Same goes for animals, they simply do not understand the purpose of judging somebody which makes Charlie spare them.

Sleeping makes you harmless and unaware of Charlie's presence, perhaps she feels relieved to not have another puppet roaming the world. The latter could however be completely false as Maxwell obviously has made his own ridiculous rules (when he could kill anything instantly.) Maybe he simply decided to allow his puppets to sleep in peace.

What about the pigs? Beforehand they would call you names such as "ugly monkey man" and they do possess some intelligence, so why aren't they being attacked then?
