Silentdarkness1
Seems like my last few playthroughs have all ended up with stupid deaths. Let's see.... PLaythrough 1: Wilson. Lasted 6 days, then got falcon pecked to death by Tallbird.playthrough 2: Willow. Lasted 40 says, then accidentally angered some Bunnymen(WHY. WHY is fish considered meat?!)with my fishsticks and got killed by a pack of four. I had a Touch Stone active above ground, but I never got to it, because RPG HUD was broken! Not to mention, i've never survived to 100 days in a single playthrough ever. In my entire life of playing DS. Why am I such a noob?! Dx I r fail. *sigh* Now comes the Wolfgang playthrough....I heavily suspect i'm going to fail again. Any tips for extending this next one? Maybe so that I survive long enough to see 50 days? xSadoro
I get you. Nor have I ever made it to day 100... I dont get good big bases neither :/ But if any ...good tip I can give you, is have fun ! Its a game... But if you want to JUST make it ...I guess anyone else would say: Dont risk it ! never. Not even if you think you can make it...And always have a way to revive and I think wolfgang and "the op robot" as I've heard him described...I actually dont know his name... WX something? ... Are your best chances ^^
Craig_Perry
well I'm no expert on Wolfgang but from what I can tell, its all in the hunger management. Stay in wimpy form until you need to fight then eat a powerful food item (e.g meaty stew) and go nuts at everythinganother note about that, you will need a lot of farms and crock pots (as food won't spoil atop them) to be able to pull off this strategy effectively, since you will likely need to restock quite often oh and armour items designed for tanking (e.g marble) are strongly advised since the time spent kiting is time you lose hunger and get closer to being wimpy again

Lasted 40 says, then accidentally angered some Bunnymen(WHY. WHY is fish considered meat?!)Personally, I never mess with tallbirds. Just not worth. At the risk of going off topic, I've never understood why certain cultures/religions consider fish to NOT be a meat. I dont get good big bases neither :/All my bases are rather compact. Most everything is within range of the fire pit so I can manage it all during the night. Don't be distracted by the pictures of the huge elaborate bases that have multiple "rooms" spanning multiple screens. They aren't practical. Idk I just never invested time in it... , just some walls over here, a potted fern there...And in my current world i didnt get any teeth from hounds, but if I did, some traps too...And thats about it, I do always end up getting a shadow manipulator. But yea, its about surviving , and you gotta do what you gotta do. Thinking ahead is what helps you the most, preparing for winter, setting up your camp at a good position (for winter , near rabbit holes is great for example)
the truthseeker
Not sure if going OT so will be brief here: Big bases work when you design them into section which have in-game purpose. You can have a farming area and a meat/pen area and a death room/tooth trap area for example. It's really important to keep everything in its place, and especially make borders for things that can affect other areas (like stone walling off your pig village zone so they don't visit your farm zone or have enemies walk up and kill them/set them on fire without your say-so.) Silentdarkness1
Interesting ideas, but i'm still in the early stages. Don't even have a Manipulator yet. But, so far i've made it to day 30. So far, so good. Even got the full Winter Hat/Puffy Vest combo going on, so should be set to survive winter. So long as I don't run into Deerclops. Silentdarkness1
WHY?! WHY IS MY LUCK THIS BAD!? Right at the end of Winter, BLAMO DEERCLOPS. All up in my base! All mah pigs died. But, somehow, through a combination of professional kiting(Had a walking cane but didn't use it), an ice staff, and meat stew, I vanquished the mighty terror, and without losing any of my structures! And, to top it all off, winter ended 4 days early : D But SERIOUSLY. First winter deerclops screws up my stuff 99.999% of the time. How does this keep happening? Am I cursed? Just like hounds, if you don't have something to attack them and kill them at range, you need to make a forward operating kill zone. You must do this even in winter. This time, I had some luck. The walking cane, for one, found it on a boon skeleton. I had a football helmet and log suit to give me a chance. Not to mention the pigs running interference and the ice staff. Hopefully, I can get some gunpowder before next winter.

Cynical Cynicist
Use everything at your disposal. If you're neglecting to use a certain item, try it out. For a long time I thought drying racks and bee boxes were too much of a hassle to bother with, but after eventually crafting them they're now among the biggest assets in my base. Diversify your methods so you can address more situations effectively.

nryn
first thing i do is look for a spot where there's 3-5 bunny holes 1-2 screens away. then make bee box and grab lots of butterflies for my honey and look for spiders for monster meat so i could survive with honey ham. I like the birdcage for bacon and eggs but he same concept applies. Next thing I make is that bee box unless it's a really late discovery and winter is on me. Nebulous
My 'base' is always just a spread-out wad of chests and things and machines in the middle of a savanna somewhere. My characters don't seem to believe in walls. They get in my way, I guess. Anyway... Always have a plan. "If hounds show up do this" or "when deerclops comes go here" or "drying racks because holy hell it's day 60 and I still haven't found the chess biome and all these danged graves didn't have any gears in them" or "if treeguards then this way" Planning ahead. I don't waste it on base design, I spend it all on "oh crap the spider nest next to my base just spawned a queen I HAVE A PLAN!"

I try to create a nice foundation of walls sometimes, but just wind up not liking the way it's matching up or thinking one line of stone looks uneven to the rest and razing it all to the ground. At this point I've resigned myself to just slapping down some carpets underneath my stuff and calling it a base.
